Stupid hoodlum....If he would've just worn a long sleeved shirt, this all could've been avoided.

You're getting good at this. :lol2:

FYI, I believe it's actually Inglewood PD and not LAPD.

Regardless which PD it was, it happens more than we think --especially in areas with a heavy minority population.

...and apparently senior citizens in assisted living centers too.

Family members are questioning the death of a 95-year-old WWII U.S. Air Corps sergeant who killed by cops at an assisted living center last month after resisting medical treatment.

....Wrana died from being shot in the stomach with the 12-gauge shotgun with bean-bag ammo.

Disgusting.

Wow. Somebody's was on their period! She should talk to her doctor about some meds to calm her a bit.

Did you even read the article? Sounds to me like he was being involuntarily committed. He became combative with the medical personnel and then wielded a 12 inch knife at police. What would you have them do differently?

Did you?

"staff and family who were at the assisted-living center at the time of the incident said they didn’t see Wrana pick up a knife. They also noted that he was sitting a chair during the altercation, meaning they believe such a show of force from authorities might not have been warranted."

Medical examiner has called it manslaughter.

Staff wanted to reenter the room:

"Kass also reported that after police barred staff from the room, workers expressed how they wished to re-enter to try and calm Wrana again. They were refused."

"[seven or so police officers] went back to the room with a riot shield in hand, entered the door and shot him with a shotgun that contained bean-bag rounds,"

Police officers that need to show this type of force and brutality to a 95 year old man should not be on duty -- period.

How would they have seen him if the police were the only ones in the room?

I'm not saying they did everything right, but I'm not one to automatically assume guilt either. The staff called then police because they couldn't control him, obviously. If he's got weapons the police probably can not let anyone else around him. They used what is normally "less lethal" weapons to subdue someone with what they claim was holding a deadly weapon. How else were they going to gain control of him? From the article linked in the one you posted...

"Police continued to command the man to surrender and follow their orders and eventually used a Taser on him. That failed to subdue him and he continued to threaten others, the release said. Police then fired bean bag rounds at the man to get him to drop the knife and surrender. He did so and was taken into custody."

I'm sure the staff decided to gather around and create a conspiracy about the old man in his room. They called a private paramedic squad and the police were there to assist them.

It was a 95 year old man. Who uses a walker. With a kitchen knife.

You have seven or eight police officers. With tasers. With riot shields. With 12 gauge shotguns and ammo to subdue.

How many cuts to the throat are you willing to take to subdue an old man?

Depends on whether or not there were 8 of me and we had riot shields, tasers, a 12 gauge and some bean bag rounds.

What's a bean bag round?

From Wikipedia:

A bean bag round can severely injure or kill in a wide variety of ways. They have caused around a death a year since their introduction in the U.S.[2] A round can hit the chest, break the ribs and send the broken ribs into the heart. A shot to the head can break the nose, crush the larynx or even break the neck or skull of the subject. This is why many officers are taught to aim for the extremities when using a bean bag round. A strike in the abdominal area can cause internal bleeding or strike the solar plexus which can disrupt breathing or heartbeat, but such a hit is generally safer than most other areas as well as presenting a larger target than an extremity. Fatalities are occasionally the result of mistaking other shotgun rounds for bean bags.[2] Activist Scott Olsen was struck in the head by a less lethal bean bag round, fired by a SWAT team member from the Oakland Police Department; he was incapacitated by the round, Olsen's skull was fractured by the round and his speech was impaired.[3]

In 2013 in Park Forest, IL, an autopsy showed that a 95 year man had died from hemoperitoneum as a result of being shot by police with a bean bag gun.[4]

Sounds kind of harsh.

Whats Hemoperitoneum?

Hemoperitoneum (sometimes also hematoperitoneum) is the presence of blood in the peritoneal cavity. The blood accumulates in the space between the inner lining of the abdominal wall and the internal abdominal organs. Hemoperitoneum is generally classified as a surgical emergency; in most cases, urgent laparotomy is needed to identify and control the source of the bleeding. In selected cases, careful observation may be permissible. The abdominal cavity is highly distensible and may easily hold greater than five liters of blood, or more than the entire circulating blood volume for an average-sized individual. Therefore, large-scale or rapid blood loss into the abdomen will reliably induce hemorrhagic shock and may, untreated, rapidly lead to death.

So answer the question. Are you gonna go hands on with a man with a 12" butcher knife who has threatened to kill you?

He's an old man but if he can swing his arms he can stab you. One good shot to the neck could finish you off.

They tried a taser and it didn't work. What's your next step?

Police officers that need to show this type of force and brutality to a 95 year old man should not be on duty -- period.

I'm just trying to figure out how/why in the world it would take eight officers to subdue ANY 95 year old person. If the police were the only people in the room, then we'll just have to take their word for it, unfortunately.

Eight responded to the call, pretty sure all 8 didn't use a taser on him and all 8 didn't shoot him with a bean bag.

Back to the question asked by HB20, how would you have handled the situation.
