Trinity Shamrocks

Featured Replies

Trinity seeks their 23rd State Football Championship in 2013. Head Coach Bob Beatty returns to lead the Rocks for his 14th season in St. Matthews. Trinity has earned 10 state titles under Beatty. His record is 167-22 (88.3%). The Shamrocks are going for their second “4-peat” with Beatty at the helm. The varsity coaching staff changes include former defensive coordinator Craig Swabek returning to the private sector and Matt Deeds returning to his Alma Mater as the linebacker coach. Brian Smith is the defensive coordinator for 2013.

Reggie Bonnafon, a University of Louisville signee, replaces recent graduate Travis Wright at quarterback. Bonnafon (SR) played wide receiver last season for the 13-1 Shamrocks. Bonnafon’s main offensive receiving target will be Cody Swabek (SR). Drew Chandler (SR) and Robert Jones(SO) will also draw attention. Donald Brooks (JR) will be the number one running back for Trinity. Woody Campbell (SR) and Scott Liebert (SR) lead the offensive line. At this time, several players are in the mix for significant playing time.

Trinity’s defensive front expects contributions from Aaron Roseberry (JR), David Bowling (JR), Adam King (JR), Connor Foos (SO), and a host of others. The linebackers vying for playing time include Jake Savage (SR), Jack Harrison (SR), Alex Reisert (JR), Zach Berger (JR), Damon Lowe (SO), and Vince Lococco (SO). The players in the defensive backfield mix include William Washle (SR), and Canon Jackson (JR).

In July and August, the depth chart at Trinity is very liquid. Players are subject to movement from position to position, from offense to defense, etc. The daily evaluation of talent represents a major strength of the Trinity staff. The practices are digitally recorded and reviewed immediately at the conclusion of a session. The players understand their performances are rated day to day. This attention to detail leads to the players maintaining a high level of effort. The camera records every action on the field. Students handle the task of recording the practices. The Trinity videographer prepares the DVDs of practices for the staffers. Ultimately, the players review these videos and they prove to be a valuable teaching tool.

Trinity will play a nine game regular season. The home schedule includes Ensworth (TN), Colerain (OH), Cathedral (IN), Manual, and Moeller(OH). The road games are Carmel (IN), Lawrence Central (IN), St. Xavier(@U of L), and Male. The Rocks and their District 4 counterparts will face District 5 in the first three rounds of the playoffs to decide the Region 3 champion. District 5 includes Oldham County, Fern Creek, Eastern, and Ballard. The survivor of the District 7 and District 8 bracket will visit the Region 3 champion. This winner will play for the 6A State Title on Friday, December 6 at 7PM (Central).

Here are some facts about Trinity football: The last time the Shamrocks were held scoreless occurred in October 1998, a streak spanning 207 games. The Rocks have 22 wins and 4 losses in state championship games (.846); a playoff record of 125-21(.856); and an overall record of 558-147-7 (.789) from 1955 through 2012.

PLAYERS TO WATCH:

Reggie Bonnafon, the senior QB and U of L signee, will be the catalyst for Trinity. His quarterback skills have not been showcased since his sophomore season at the JV level. Donald Brooks, who saw varsity action as a freshman, will lead the Rocks rushing attack as a junior. Cody Swabek is a senior receiver expected to be sure handed and is blessed with speed.

Canon Jackson, will be a leader in the secondary. Canon’s father, Sanchez, was an outstanding player for St. Xavier. Canon’s uncle is former Tennessee LB Bernard Jackson.

How well the underclassmen perform under the lights will dictate the success of this Trinity squad.

The expectations are always high. Will Trinity build on its first time lead in the rivalry with St. Xavier? Will the Rocks progress enough to bring home their fourth consecutive 6A title? The Rocks will scrimmage Highlands at home on August 16. The first three quarters will be a game simulation.

Very nice review. Thanks and "GO ROCKS"

I posted a month ago in another thread but it bears repeating: It will not take long for folks to say, "Where have they been hiding Bonnafon & Brooks for the last 2 years???"

If the defense grows and gels this will be a very fun year. This offense will continue to score points against everybody. May take early lumps (or may not?), but come November this should be another T team that you won't want to play.

I am looking forward to this season. I understand Coach Beatty is enjoying this group. Their work effort and thirst for football knowledge has the staff pumped up again. Ensworth (18), Colerain (25), and Lawrence Central (20) are ranked in USA Today's preseason Top 25. The Rocks will be battle tested by the time the district games are played.

Trinity is KY football. They have an awesome team, staff and fan base. KY HS football is KY HS football . If Trinity were in Texas, Pa, Ga, Fl, Calf, Tx ,Oh, they probably wouldn't even be a top 10 team in that state.

The last few years Trinity would have been a top ten team in every state in the country.

I must disagree. Rivals has them at #45 in the US today. I'd say Trinity has elevated their program in recent years to unexpected heights. The staff is top notch. The facilities compare favorably with any team. Marshall Stadium may not have a Jumbo-Tron. It does have a new playing surface. With three top 25 USA Today ranked(#18, #20, #25) teams on the schedule, we will know within the first month how the Rocks stack up this season. I will be satisfied with the five game winning streak to end the season.

Any reports from the Green - White scrimmage?

Was a good showing for offense, Reggie looked good passing and running both. Haven't seen this type of speed at the qb position since Nick Petrino. Defense is coming along, but is replacing alot of starters. Curious to see the scrimmage vs Highlands Friday, be very anxious to see the adjustments made since the Thursday scrimmage. Ready for the season to start.

Seeing the freshman QB get in and mix it up bodes well for the future. I believe some of the predictions of Trinity's demise are premature. I believe Coach Beatty will remain at Trinity for many more seasons.

Reggie's running ability adds a new dimension. U of L didn't offer him a full ride without doing some research.

I've heard that Reggie runs the forty under 4.5. I hope it's true.
