Hit him with a car then jumped out and attacked him with meat cleavers. They then waited for police to show up. Asked people with phones and cameras to record their messages.

Heard that the first police officers on scene couldnt do anything because they didnt have guns to fend off the assailants.

Even use of "Pepper Spray" and Tasers are highly regulated and investigated like the use of a firearm by police in the US. I guess only a special response team (ie..SWAT) is allowed to carry firearms.

I guess they said they had to wait till an armed response team arrived. Pretty bad if you dont allow your own police to carry guns.

Why, if they don't really need them that often? It seems reasonable to me. I read a statistic that the German police fired 85 bullets over the course of the entire year. Some US departments beat that in a day. That disparity should alarm people (not that I'm blaming the police, either, but our ways of handling crime, violence, and our general cultural differences are not always for the better).

Between increasing extremism growing in Great Britian (per an new report I saw) and rioting in Sweden, more bullets may be needed in Europe.

Try using that explanation to the families of the victims the few times they are needed. Would really be a shame if a death, rape, etc. could've been prevented had the cops been properly armed.

There's been a nationalistic trend against immigration (read: Muslims) for a while now in Europe. I'm not sure the answer is more violence, though. It seems the segregation and isolation of different groups is a breeding ground for more extremism, which is why I don't sympathize with the nationalism of many European countries.

The nationalism has reached extremely problematic levels. Just look what's happening to Spain right now. Spain as we know it will look very different 50 years from now... and by "different" I mean "noticeably smaller".

No idea how often it happens, but it's ridiculously ignorant to not be equipped for such scenarios.

 

You mean like the situation this week where the cop accidentially killed the girl as well as the kidnapper? Yes, I think those are impossible situations to deal with, but had the cop not been equipped with a weapon we'd be looking at at least two dead innocent people as opposed to one. Of course there's always going to people that are going to try and blame law enforcement for everything.

It's been my own experience from the limited number of English people I've met that things like this don't seem to faze their belief that the city is better off without the guns. Whether that's a reasonable thought is neither here nor there as that's what they seem to think. But, there were 99 total murders last year in London, one of the most populous cities on the planet. That's stunning on its own. Only six of those were committed with guns.
