Under the bill, online retailers would collect an estimated $22 billion to $24 billion that now goes uncollected. A final vote is expected in the Senate by the end of the week. When the House will take up the issue is uncertain.

If you spin it to one party or the other they would come out of the woodwork to defend or attack it. Problem is that there are idiots in DC on both sides supporting this.

The folks backing this bill are the usual suspects, tax-hungry state and local politicians, who covet the ability to tax folks who CANNOT vote against them. If state and local politicians want to collect taxes from online retailers, they can............as long as those retailers are located within those jurisdictions.

11 Billion mised out on. What will our government do with the extra money. Spend it on something like why some lesbians are fat or drink too much.

First, The National Institutes of Health (NIH) awarded $1.5 million to study biological and social factors for why “three-quarters” of lesbians are obese and why gay males are not, calling it an issue of “high public-health significance.”

But apparently the NIH didn’t feel that that enough money had been spent studying the social habits of lesbians because there was a $2.7 million study to understand why lesbians drink too much.

Anybody notice that in modern Washington anytime a bill has "FAIRNESS" in the title it usually involves trying to get more money from someone?

why not just have a national sales tax on online purchases, say 4% or something and be done with it.

Why poop? If you were to go into a store and buy it, you would pay a state sales tax right? So why shouldnt you pay the same tax if it was purchased online?

First, governments at all levels are in trouble financially. So more taxes are inevitable. This is just an other action needed to try to address the public-sector financial crisis's that are mostly being ignored in the press.

But second, there is a privacy issue. Now every transaction you execute on the web would be visible to the Federal government. Big brother will have a new set of tools to look into your life. Definitely usable by the IRS for new tactics that may extend beyond the immediate purchases themselves. But is may have a use as related to recent events. As of now the Federal government is prohibited from keeping a specific database of gun owners, though they can and do track guns used in criminal activity. This limitation was established via the Firearms Owners' Protection Act, signed into law in 1986. That is one reason the 'universal registration' bill failed - it was in direct conflict with this law. But the ATF is using other means to determine who has guns. If they can see every internet purchase you make and you order ammo over the internet its pretty easy to map those transactions to what type of guns you may have.

Sounds paranoid, right?

Since the bill seems to originated in the Senate it can not allow the Federal government to collect Federal taxes. All revenue bills must originate in the House.

If this did originate in the Senate it would only allow states to collect taxes. But the Federal government may have uses - see above.

This was just a matter of time in coming. Some states already collect this tax and have been for some time. It's also a tax that we are ALL supposed to be claiming anyway at the end of the year on our taxes if we buy over the internet. I am all for less taxes and keeping more of my money, but like plantmanky said, you go to a storefront and pay the sales tax, why shouldn't you expect to on an internet purchase?

Every state now has the power to tax the internet sales of any corporation in their state. If they are not it is a failure of the state. This is excessive and money grabbing. This is not a federal issue, its a state issue. The Senate needs to stay out.
