March 13, 201313 yr Man who wrestled shark away from kids fired for missing work | The Sideshow - Yahoo! News
March 13, 201313 yr I see both sides of it but if you are on (mental) sick leave as the article referenced then I think a beach vacation is just what the Doc ordered.
March 13, 201313 yr We had a guy at work who requested Opening Day off. He was denied due to having to many off already. He called in sick and went to the Reds game. The next day he was on the front page of the newspaper at a bar having a beer. He didn't get fired, but I bet he doesn't do that again.
March 13, 201313 yr Paul Marshallsea and his 56-year-old wife, Wendy, were on leave from the Pant & Dowlais Boys & Girls Club in Wales for "work-related stress" in January, when he was spotted on a video grabbing the shark in shallow water as it approached the children and pulling it in the other direction. So was he on sick leave or work related stress leave? Like Ru said, seems like a day at the beach would be just what the doctor ordered for a stress free day.

Sounds familiar to the Cov Cath Senior class who had Senior Skip Day about 8-10 years ago when they all got caught on Sportscenter.
March 14, 201313 yr I'd say a lawsuit for wrongful termination is forthcoming. I am no expert but I assume the majority of employees are at will employees which means you can be fired at will for no reason.

March 14, 201313 yr For what? If he was fired for being at the beach while on a leave of absence then that is wrong.
March 14, 201313 yr If he was fired for being at the beach while on a leave of absence then that is wrong. You can be fired for anything and there is generally nothing you can do about it. Unless the termination was some type of discrimination. When I worked at the Toyota plant in Georgetown there were several people fired for a very similar thing. The ones fired were fired because they were observed violating their work restriction at company day at Kings Island. Not one of them were able to get their jobs back.

The situation you just described is completely different from what happened to the guy in the article.

Yes and no, employers view it that, if you are fit enough to do it away from work, you are fit enough to do it at work. My example should have been more clear. Their restrictions at Toyota or reasons for being off were not necessarily work related.

According to the article he was on a leave of absence from work due to work stress.....So how exactly is going to the beach the same as being at work in this situation? It's not is my point. It's exactly something someone would do when they take a break from work to unwind.
