Smith may have been uncomfortable with the teaching requirements of the Boone job. He's been out of teaching for several years and a lot has changed in that time in what's expected of high school teachers. Standards are very high now. Last thing he taught was Driver's Ed. Boone doesn't even offer that class. I doubt many high schools do.

What I'm hearing is that he wanted "teacher's salary" without having to teach, and I'm also hearing that he wanted his own staff hired on as teachers. All rumors though, those in the know aren't saying anything.

So he did not teach at Boyle, ever? I find it hard to believe that a school system would give an unproven coach a deal like that. Before Boyle, he was unproven.

In terms of State Championships, yes.

 

However, ask those close to the Campbellsville High School if he didn't help save the program. He brought that program back. Campbellsville HS football was about ready to shut down before he took the job in '88 (after his one year stint & 1st ever HC gig @ Allen County- Scottsville in '87).

 

He taught. He either did Health PE and/or Driver's Ed along the way, too.
