The score wasn't run up. Trigg never pressed and they played a zone the entire game. No one played more than 20 minutes in this one. When one team shoots 59-percent and the other team shoots 23-percent, this kind of game will happen. When one team outrebounds the other 56-26, this kind of game will happen. You can't tell the J.V. team to go in try not to score. It goes against everything you work on in practice.

You can call off the dogs by slowing the game down at both ends of the court. You can tell your players to walk the ball up the court and accept no shot that is not a wide open layup. Teams do this all the time when they have a small lead in the closing minutes of a game. Alternatively, you can run your regular offense, and run the score up.

 

A coach knows in the first couple of minutes of a game (if not behore the game) when their opponent is completely over matched. A coach who allows the score to get as out of hand as it did in this game is showing a total lack of class and setting a bad example for his players and the young people in the stands. Lots of teams outshoot opponents badly. Few rack up 83 point wins - and for good reason.

 

I hope that the winning coach had the opportunity to apologize to everybody involved in this game either as a witness or participant and I hope that he took advantage of that opportunity.

That is not going to happen.

The only thing Trigg did wrong on the night was wear the wrong uniform. Both teams had black jerserys on so Trigg wore Ft. Campbell's white uniform tops for the game. Looked pretty wierd.

I have watched Bill Chumbler's teams for well over a decade, and I've never seen him intentionally run up the score on anyone. Providence is not a very good team and their best player, who scored 42 points in an upset of Crittenden County earlier in the week, and Trigg is talented.

 

I wasn't there, but I feel confident in saying that Chumbler wasn't running up the score on Providence. The Scribe's account seems to confirm that premise ... sometimes things just get out of hand.

He may not have run the score up on Providence but I have seen a Chumbler coached team pressing while up 30+ midway through a 4th quarter. To me that is not necessary.

Thats great, the point is his team didn't do it last night, Providence is 3-11 and Trigg is 13-3, things like this happen. I have never seen such a meaningless game turn into such an important topic, 24 posts for a 83 point win, WHO CARES!

Probably my fault for challenging The Scribe early on, and I agree, this thread should be closed.

There is no fault for voicing an opinion about the score. But at least base it on the facts. If you watched the game or saw video of the game, you would come away with the impression that Trigg did not run up the score. Did they play four corners or keep away? No. But they shouldn't have to. They never pressed and played zone defense. Providence was called for a whopping six fouls in the game so you can guess how much defense they played. If you saw the game and felt he ran the score up, fine. I can live with that. But to call a coach classless and say they ran up the score when you're halfway across the state and didn't see a single play is wrong IMO.
