Rather than spend our time exclusively reviewing the final week of the regular season, we want take a look across the 10th & see which teams are heading into the post-season with momentum & which teams are looking for (and need) a fresh start.

 

Who's Hot?

 

1) There's no way to start a "Who's Hot?" in the 10th Region list with someone other than Montgomery County. The Indians have lost but 4 games on the season, with the last blemish coming at the hands of mighty Trinity on January 26th. Happy Osborne has the region's most talented roster & also its best player. It's going to take a monumental effort from someone in the Region to prevent the Indians from making a March trip to Rupp Arena.

 

2) Bishop Brossart seems the most likely candidate to upend the Indians. The Mustangs remained undefeated vs. Region opponents last week by taking care of Mason County in The Fieldhouse. Mike Code's squad is 11-2 since January 10th & has recently received solid performances from forward Alex Trentman. The 'Stangs will very likely battle the winner of Scott & Campbell County for the coveted 37th District championship, but they also have their sights set on something beyond a District title.

 

3) Despite the home loss to Bishop Brossart, the Mason County Royals have picked the right time to play their best basketball. Chris O'Hearn's team rebounded from a very sluggish month of January to go 5-1 in February. The key ingredient for the Royals seems to be guard play. Junior big man Shawn Johnson gets it done on a game-by-game basis, but the guards will ultimately tell the tale for Mason's post-season success.

 

4) From out of nowhere the Bracken County Polar Bears have emerged as somewhat of an underdog in a 39th District where the bulk of attention has been given to Mason County & Augusta. While the Royals & Panthers remain the District's top two squads, the Polar Bears enter the post season having won 6 of their last 7 games, including a surprising 76-68 end-of-season victory over Newport. The Bears have been getting outstanding performances from senior guard Philip Jefferson & bruising senior forward Eli Florer.

 

Who's Not?

5) By "Who's Not?" we don't necessarily mean a team is cold. In a few instances teams seem to be lukewarm. The first of those teams that comes to mind is Campbell County. The Camels 6-game winning streak came to a halt last week, losing a 55-54 home contest with Fleming County & then ending the regular season with a 62-51 defeat at the hands of Ryle. Aric Russell would have preferred a pair of wins, but we're not hitting the panic button at all. The Camels seem to be a completely different team with Nate McGovney as healthy as he's been all season.

 

6) The Augusta Panthers head into post-season play having gone 2-3 in their last five regular season games. The Panthers' three losses were all at home to solid teams--Campbell County, Montgomery County, & Rowan County--but Jason Hinson's squad wasn't tremendously impressive in its two victories over Bracken County & Raceland. Up next for the Panthers is a hot Mason County team on its home floor, with the loser closing the door on its season.

 

7) Mason Monroe & the Pendleton County Wildcats went 2-0 last week, and while the victories were expected, they were also needed for a team that entered the week having lost 4 of 5. Ed Cravens' team will battle its arch-rival on Monday night with the season on the line. The Wildcats are opposite Harrison County in the opening round of the 38th District Tournament, which is being hosted by the Thorobreds.

 

8) Harrison County also earned a much-needed win by dealing a 17-point blow to Frankfort last week. However, the 'Breds finished the season by receiving a 34-point pounding from Montgomery County in Cynthiana. In their last 10 games Larry Kendall's squad is 3-7.

 

9) There will very likely be a new champion in the 40th District, but George Rogers Clark has proven to be a tough out for its opponents. The Cardinals have not amassed very many wins in the 2012-13 campaign, but Scott Humphrey's team is able to stay in games with formidable defense & relentless effort. The undersized Cards probably don't have what it takes to 3-peat, but can certainly provide an upset victory somewhere along the way when Region time rolls around. Before that can happen, however, the Cards must hold court at home when it takes on Paris in the opening round of the 40th.

 

10) If there is a certified "cold" team entering the post-season it would have to be the Scott Eagles. The 37th District's #2 seed has not won a game since February 1st & has lost 5 of 6. Having said that, Brad Carr's team plays a difficult schedule & you can count on the Eagles being adequately prepared for their semi-final round District game vs. Campbell County. From our vantage point, this is the game to watch in District play.

The last time we tried a live broadcast out of the Middle School with a huge crowd on hand (Brossart vs Campbell County - Jan 5th)., my laptop was having trouble holding an internet signal from my MIFI unit due to all of the cell phone/I-Phone/I-Pad interference.

 

My plans are to use a new laptop, BUT it has WIndows 8 on it, and being an XP guy, I am really struggling at getting it broadcast ready. The sound quality is not what I want it to be and there is some serious lag in the headsets. I've got two days to figure it out. At best, I will be able to provide score updates via the BMustangs website.

 

If someone familiar with Windows 8 would like to sit in with me and engineer, I'd be happy to have them.
