Newport 60 Highlands 42

Featured Replies

Final

Congrats to Newport as they came out strong in the first half LED by Jaquan Short. He drilled several 3's and the Birds Couldnt get anything to fall.

Trailing 36-19 at the half the Birds fought back in the 3rd Qtr forcing several Wildcat turnovers but could never get the déficit under 10 pts. Newport always seemed to answer.

A much better 2nd half for the Birds as they dominated the boards with Witte and True but credit the Wildcats as they played well in transition scoring several layups.

One thing they do well is Look for each other in the open court and they are pretty decent shooters.

The Birds had a really Poor shooting first half. If thesr two teams meet again at Highlands for Districts with their hone crowd and better shooting, they have a good shot at winning Imo.

Thanks for the info Q. Thought the Birds would give Newport a much better game. Thought this game would be close with either team having a chance to win in the end. Congrats to the Wildcats on the victrory. Just maybe they will meet again in the Districts. If this district seeded it would probably be guaranteed. I know we are still a bit away from the District tournament, but do you know when the draw is, since it is at Highlands this year?

The draw is in early Feb I believe.

Just saw boxscore and 9 players scored for Birds to get 42 pts of which Houlistin LED with 8.

The Short brothers combined for 40 of their 60. Those two played atleast 30 of the 32 min.

Turner played about 18 min máx and Witte 22 min.

The Short brothers are solid athletes that get to the rim but shoot well enough to force you to defend their jumper.

I think it might be time for Flynn to shorten the bench and roll with the starting 5 as long as he can with maybe 2 or 3 guys coming in at the end of each quarter.

The problem with Highlands right now is their inability to put the ball in the basket from the field and the line. I felt the effort on the defensive end was much better last night and yet Newport was redhot in the first quarter. The Birds just have too many stretches where they do not score though last night they got some decent looks and just did not finish. Playing too many kids is not the issue IMO, it is more finding the right combinations to have on the floor so that you do not have times when there are very few scoring options.

You cant score if you are constantly looking over your shoulder and getting yanked out of the game.

Then When taken out just yelled at and not coached up.

I guess this is the year where being a Sr and putting your time in means nothing. The past two years the Sr's never came off the floor. Especially last season When the starting PG scored 29 points the entire season and avg'd 25 min a game.

If you are playing for next season, Fine atleast communicate that to them.

I am all for yanking kids WHO dont show effort or continuously do someyhing wrong, but I think ITA up to the staff, Boy necessarily the Head Coach to atleast talk to the kids on the bench and ley them know what is up.

The kids coming off the bench are not Varsity basketball players but will soon be with all the minutes they are taking from the Sr's.

Thanks, Q.

Haven't seen Highlands yet so was just wondering what happened last night. Newport is good, but Highlands has enough talent in their jr and sr class that they shouldn't lose to Newport by 18.

I don't follow HHS but maybe the SR's aren't as good as some on here think. I don't think you should be entitled to minutes just because you are a Senior. If they aren't getting the job done maybe the coach is trying someone else. Again, I don't follow them so I'm just looking at it from reading the posts and not biased by having a kid that plays there.

Turner and Witte (both seniors) are as good or better than any one on the team, IMO.

Understood but I can assure you what comes off the bench doesnt give you a better chance at winning the game. It gives kids varsity minutes and experience. It goes against what the coach has done the past 3-4 seasons.

Like I said, if that is the plan then communicate it. If not, tgen try something different offensively because unfortunately what they are doing is not working. If it means they crearte offense off defense then coach the kids about anticipating passes and defending the passing lanes to get steals. Sitting in sones defensively is far from creating havoc and potential offense.

I will be the first to say my son has disappeared for chunks of minutes and needs to play at a higher level but being yanked out of games at the craziest momentos, generally agree they play well during a spurt really doesnt make sense. That is unless you have blocks of minutes drawn up before the game like YMCA ball.

Q - I am right there with you when it comes to the level of frustration. It is miserable to watch these boys give effort and the results be as they are.

Coming off of a weak 39 point performance at Cooper, a game in which we went 9 minutes between the 2nd and 3rd quarters without scoring a single point, the Birds needed to come out of the blocks with a little fire and score the ball. The exact opposite happens.

After 4 minutes of play, Newport has a double digit lead and the Birds have 2 points. Two points against a Newport team not known for their defensive stoutness. It was not pretty. Flynn goes to the bench and puts in 5 new players.

This was not an atempt at "playing for next year" or limiting the seniors minutes, it was an attempt to lite a fire up their a**. To the credit of the "not ready for primetime players", they scored 8 points in the last 4 minutes of the quarter and kept the Newport lead from expanding. Starters came back and things got a little better, but still not to the level that most expect.

I will be the first to agree, HHS has no chance of winning without the seniors and junior starters getting the bulk of the minutes. Q, I would hope you agree, HHS has no chance of winning with the seniors or junior starters playing the way they did in the first quarter last night. Thank God Flynn subbed at the 4 minute mark, if he would have allowed that to continue it could have been a running clock by halftime.

I told another bball parent tonight, I would prefer that my son didn't play so much in the varsity game. When he plays, it is in response to the lack of production of those in front of him. My hope is that we can come out tomorrow night against Ryle and the starters can produce enough to earn the 25 to 28 minutes of playing time that is wished for.

They deserved to be benched in the first Qtr but 11 kids are playing in vurtually every game and if you remember Pikeville, 10 kids saw action in the 1st qtr of one game.

The 2nd five played well in the first Qtr last Night i would agree with that.

But its been a consistent theme over two seasons, once you hit a few baskets and get Into the foie, you get subbed out.

Bottom line is the JRs and Srs need to all play better for an entire game, play possessed. I am just dumbfounded at the number of qtrs where we get blown out and it has costs us several games these droughts.

Ryle was a win last Ye on a last second stickback, Birds were up 11 with 1 min left and had to steal the win. I hope we see a better effort out of the Top 5.
