Covington Latin 53 Bellevue 42

Featured Replies

I checked his wiki page. Born April 14, 1966. Graduated from Latin School in 1982 at 16. If that is right, he actually had just turned 16 the month before he graduated.

Thanks VOR for checking it out!

Congrats and Continued Success to the Trojans!!!

Riherds says Gene Morrison is (still) the head coach of the Trojans - Has to be the dean of Northern Kentucky Coaches.

how long has he been there?

I for one just love it when this type of anomaly happens with Covington Latin basketball of having an exceptional talent considering the age obstacles they always face, and the nature of their small school status not known for athletic prowess. Mitchell Blewett's name can now be added to the short list of amazing Latin talents that include Jeff Stowers, Brian O'Connor, and David Justice. My personal interest in all of this began when I was a child and my first unusual exposure to high school basketball was by tagging along to numerous Latin games with my neighbors whose son played for them. From the get-go I learned early on to root for the underdog, and it pleases me to no end when I see them have some success. I certainly keep close attention to 9th Region basketball with high hopes that lead to the Kentucky Sweet 16, but always dig it when these type of rare footnoted scenarios happen from time to time. It just adds to the pleasure of following the game, and is to me just downright interesting. I'm guessing to anyone reading this that this much is obvious. I have to admit that I left Bellevue's gym last night with a big goofy smile on my face. Their victory just made my night.
Coming from a small school myself I can appreciate your perspective as well., the talent here seems to be around, just have to get the players to believe in themselves.

Brag Alert: FWIW... About a week before David Justice was awarded the MLB NL Rookie of the year in 1990, I had the chance to shake hands with him and congratulate him on his nomination, and wish him good luck in winning it.

Morrison has to have been the coach for at least 25 years, maybe even 30. Father Ed Heile was the coach when Justice played and he graduated in 1982. I think Fr. Heile stopped coaching shortly thereafter and Morrison took over. I think those are the only two basketball coaches in Latin School's history.
