Highlands doesnt need to be ranked at this point in the season, its too early but I can assure you they are much better than they were last season. They have better skill and are much faster getting the ball up and down the court.

Minor, but I would swap Boone and Conner since Boone just beat them.

 

That win is fine for determining a spot or two but I wouldnt ball it a HUGE win or loss for either team.

How many of these teams have you actually seen? Not a slight on your rankings, but simply curious. I personally think you can't go wrong with any of your top 4 anywhere from 1-4. After that it gets tough but I do think Dixie is clearly the best option for #5, with the potential to beat anyone in the top 4. (See Newcath game)

As you well know, I don't have the luxury of attending that many games other than the ones played by CovCath due to practice and occasionally spending the evening with "The Boss" at home but I too talk to a lot of coaches/scorekeepers at the CovCath games, who have given me their opinions on teams.

 

As I told you off line, my reasoning for placing Holmes where they are, is due to them not playing one team (as the date I wrote you) that has a winning record while the other four have played some quality teams.

 

I agree with you, you can't go wrong with any of the top 5 but........IMHO....is what I did.

This will not be complete as I'm sure that I will write a chapter with what I'm about to say. Making it complete, it will become a book. I applaud anyone reading my chapter, much less my book.

 

Here goes:

 

 

Of Walter's top ten I have yet to see Cooper, Ryle, & Conner. Eager to see the Jags considering all the nods they are getting. My thoughts are terribly scattered as for some of the teams that I've only seen once, it was early, and some that I've seen more, I've seen improvement. When NewCath faced Dixie (The Hatton game), early on it wasn't so much that NewCath was so dominate, it was that Dixie was pretty rusty. Certainly saw NewCath's potential mostly because of their length, and their floor general is as confident as they come, but I worry about their depth, and a one dimensional focus. If their perimeter shooting smoothes out, then they are almost complete. When I saw Dixie a second time against Newport, their supporting cast looked much improved from the NewCath game. Light night and day really. Seen Newport 3 times and have been impressed every time. They'll be a feisty load for any team with Short and Pearson having serious game and an honorable supporting cast with good guard play. They held up very well in their season opener against Holmes. After a rusty start, I saw what Holy Cross was made of when they caught fire late in their season opener with Newport. They have no depth to speak of, but what they do have is nothing to sneeze at. They can really turn it on, but with a small bench I'm not so sure they can play at that pace an entire game with the likes of a Holmes, or a CovCath who impressed me more than I expected. This may be the quickest Colonel bunch that I've ever seen, and Ruthsatz has to be seen to believe. You wouldn't guess from just looking at him, but the kid is money and so darn complete, and quick as lightening. His instincts are so solid that it appears that he could perform in his sleep. They ran fast with, and dominated a very quick Taft team that had no shooting to speak of. When they go up against Holmes, I'm expecting a game for the ages where the fans will be worn out just watching. Sure, they rely on Ruthsatz to get his 20, but they're much more than that with experience on the rise. The Bulldogs of course have proven themselves more than worthy as a top vote getter, and will certainly be getting every other team's best attempt when faced. Compared to teams with size, it's hard telling if they'll control the pace, or get rattled by a slower tempo. NewCath historically has given Holmes fits in recent memory, even when the Dogs have been best in class. The Bulldogs have probably the best schedule to test them with every possible type game to face that will only help their experience level as the season progresses. Saw Highlands in their season OT opener against an 0-5 St. Henry and saw that they certainly play with a lot of heart, and do have players of a valid threat with muscle and size (True), solid shooting (Houliston), dimension (Witte), and confident guard play (Hinkel). They're going to have to play catch up in the experience department considering this was just their first game. I expect them to have some early ups and downs, but look for them to fine tune as the season moves on. I'm guessing that they'll eventually be better than a 1 point OT victory over St. Henry. Teams like St. Henry are competitive but just have too many obstacles. If they could shoot a free throw they might win a game or at least stay in one. I put them on a similar level with Lloyd as they too can play, but they're not completely sound and have no depth. Hope you don't mind but I'm going to list my top 13 and place them in 3 groups. Everyone knows who the top 4 are but as of now I will give a nod to speed over size. Having not seen Ryle, Conner, or Boone, I will clump them together with Highlands, Lloyd and St. Henry for now and borrow a little from what others have stated about them. To me the teams in my respective groups are fairly even, with only a slight edge here and there. This is not completely scientific and to be honest I'm going a little coo-coo trying to be completely accurate.
