Found a Gallup study from 2005 that states 67% of gun owners state protection as a reason, 66% state target shooting, and 58% state hunting.

The above would seem to tell some that 58% of gun owners hunt.

Now waitaminute. I wasn't necessarily making that case. Just that gun owners tend to be a bit disingenuous in their methods of shooting down (pun somewhat intended) the arguments of those who are anti-gun.

I wasn't being obtuse, only stating that every caliber has ammo that can be more lethal than other ammo. Conventional "wad cutter" ammo from most manufacturers was intended for target practice due to his lack of lethal damage to the recipient. Can it be deadly? Duh! But lethal ammo for home protection or for use in deadly force is designed to mushroom and expand leaving a wound channel that disables. Not explode (like some media likes to portray some ammo, although exploding ammo does exist) I'm simply saying that in and of themselves guns (and I'm referring to handguns here because that is the crux of Costas' statement) are able to be used for multiple uses. I'll go as far as saying that the ammo one carries will determine one's intent, straight up.

I don't hunt much anymore and don't really fear for my safety on a daily basis. I own guns because since I was a child I have enjoyed shooting guns and wanted to continue. I taught my kids to shoot for the enjoyment and so they would not fear firearms.

 

I agree with Barkley it is a crime culture that is prevalent in our country today in many communities that is at fault.

You need to rephrase that question. As in - how many legal guns are there in NYC, LA, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Philly, etc?

You're missing my point Jim. I'm not arguing that at all. All I'm saying is that the weapon doesn't have to be used for deadly purposes. And the ammo indeed makes a difference. I think it's more than apropos for this discussion.

Most people who have guns do not have guns for hunting.

 

Simple as that.
