10 Notes From The 10th Region (Reviewing Week 1)

 

1) Happy Osborne's pre-season favorite and #9 ranked Montgomery County team started the season off in dominant fashion, going 3-0, including a 72-58 win over Tates Creek in the Mr. Basketball classic. Six Indians have notched double figures in scoring thus far, including a 28 points performance by junior guard Bryan Wallace vs. Tates Creek & Omar Prewitt's 27 points vs. Menifee County (to go along with 12 rebounds, 9 blocks, 7 steals & 5 assists). The aforementioned Wallace is also nabbing 6.3 steals per outing, while scoring 15.3 points per game. The week ahead includes a Tuesday night tango with Paris, followed by a Friday night battle with #4 Madison Central in Mt. Sterling.

 

2) Forty miles to the northwest another coach made his debut as the head man this week, as Larry Kendall's Harrison County Thorobreds went 2-0. Most impressive, the Breds blitzed visiting St. Henry on Friday night by a score of 88-61. The visiting Crusaders had no answer for Harrison County's sizzling 12-21 3pt. shooting. Things will get very interesting this week, as Brad Carr's Scott Eagles come to Cynthiana for a Tuesday night battle.

 

3) Speaking of Scott, the Eagles were somewhat shaky this week, losing in their season opener at Ryle 61-46. After a convincing victory over 37th District foe Silver Grove, Scott put away Mason Monroe and the Pendleton County Wildcats in Covington on Friday night. The Eagles, however, finished the week the way they started it: with a loss. This time the opponent was Gallatin County and the loss by a solitary point. A pair of difficult 10th Region opponents await this week, as the Eagles travel to Harrison County on Tuesday & then host Mason County on Friday.

 

4) Mason County & Bourbon County had a lot in common last week: Both played just one game, both played a Class A opponent from within the region, and both won in convincing fashion. It makes sense, then, that the two should square off Tuesday night in Maysville in what seems to be an intriguing matchup. Keep your eye on this one.

 

5) Mike Code & his Bishop Brossart Mustangs perhaps compiled the most impressive resume for the week. Like Montgomery County, the Stangs went 3-0 in the season's first week. An opening night victory over Silver Grove was followed by a hard-fought road win at St. Henry. But it was a Saturday contest in the John Turner Classic that was most eye-opening. Brossart unleashed a staggering 22-2 advantage over Iroquois in the first quarter & cruised to a 64-40 victory, with Justin Saunders & Drew Burns both finishing with 16 points.

 

6) Sticking with 37th District powers, Campbell County went 1-1 in Week 1, scoring a victory over Calvary Christian and falling to Butler 74-58 in the John Turner Classic at Newport. Most concerning was an injury sustained by Camels' star swingman Nate McGovney. The extent of the injury is unknown, but preliminary reports seem to indicate an injury of a mild nature. Let's hope that is the case.

 

7) The two-time defending 10th Region champs struggled in Week 1, as George Rogers Clark fell by 21 points in the season opener (at home) to Covington Catholic. Then on Saturday afternoon the Cards traveled to Falmouth, where they were upended on a last-second 3-pointer in a 59-56 loss to Pendleton County. The schedule doesn't get any easier for Scott Humphrey's squad, as they entertain a pair of strong teams this week, beginning with mighty Madison Central on Tuesday night & then with the 16th Region's Ashland Tomcats on Friday night.

 

8) Ed Cravens debuted as the head coach for the Pendleton County Wildcats this week. It was a tough way to start, as Pendleton County lost on the road against Scott on Thursday. But the Wildcats finished the week in style, beating George Rogers Clark on Garrett Appleman's last second 30-foot heave. The 3-pointer was Appelman's only basket of the game. The Wildcats have three games in four days this week & none of them are easy. Tuesday night the squad will face 9th Region power Holmes. Thursday night will see Brent Bach & the Augusta Panthers travel to Falmouth. On Friday night the team returns to Covington yet again, but this time to face Covington Catholic.

 

9) The Augusta Panthers took care of business in two road games vs. Class A opponents, easily dispatching Deming on Tuesday night (64-34) & Calvary Christian on Friday night (79-54). Jason Hinson's Panthers stay on the road this week, with a Thursday night showdown in Falmouth vs. Pendleton County (see: Brent Bach vs. Mason Monroe) & 48 hours later a visit to Bourbon County.

 

10) St. Patrick played four games last week, finishing with a .500 record. But the headline from the Saints' week came in game 1--a thrilling 63-61 road victory over Class A foe Paris--in which senior guard Cory Jodrey poured in 38 points, while pulling down 7 rebounds.
