NEXT Posted January 19, 2006 Posted January 19, 2006 The WYMT Classic is a great but it has problems The 13th, 14th, and 15th are spread out and that is one problem. Knott Cent. is the other, not because they don't have good facilities(they do), or they are not good people(they are), but because Hindman is not a great destination for the fans, where you going to eat, what you going to do if you get there early? The next problem is, you invite the best teams each year and some feel it would be the same ones over and over, and it would, but it would be the BEST teams playing. There is no excuse for Phelps(1 great player) and BL(???) to be in this tourney. My suggestions - 1. Rotate The Classic between Pikeville Civic Center, Perry Central, and North/South Laurel 2. New Selection Committee Anyone want add
MountainThunder Posted January 19, 2006 Posted January 19, 2006 I agree. Knott Central has a very nice facility, but, I don't think it is the ideal location for the tourney. I like Next's ideas on this.
stark Posted January 19, 2006 Posted January 19, 2006 Knott Central has vastly improved their gym from the dungeon it used to be. New lights and a resurfaced floor looked great. I think Hindman is the best place for the tourny considering that it is a semi-central location for teams from the 13th & 15th. I do agree that this year's teams were a little weak, yet most of the games were close, and that's probably what the tournament selection guys were looking for. How did Phelps rank being on WYMT twice this season, once in football and then the classic? Where was Clay County this season? I wouldn't have a problem with tournament rotating locations such as the Civic Center and the London area, but that means a long trip for somebody. It would be easier to rotate the site if the tournament was held during Christmas Break, when teams could stay in Pikeville or London at least overnight.

More $$$$$$$$ but more reward !!!!!! You need better outlook on teams and not have Paintsville your # 1 team this year ... Paintsville is good team and will be a great team but not going into the classic and being so young ......
ZapTwang Posted January 20, 2006 Posted January 20, 2006 Tournment seems to have lost some fire, some great suggestions to move to different locations in the 13, 14, and 15th regions. Rotate similar to the regional tournment sites and hold during Christmas break. Would have to help.

Knott Central is a long way from the London/Corbin area. How long has it been since the Redhounds played in the WYMT tournament?
Sportsfan33 Posted January 20, 2006 Posted January 20, 2006 Central locations would be more like Perry/Breathitt county. Just about every team would be no more than a 2-2.5 hour drive, with most being closer to the 1.5 hour drive. Let's not forget about one huge reason they have the tournament and that's to give out scholarships to numerous kids from each region. They are successful at that.
Pat Man Posted January 20, 2006 Posted January 20, 2006 [ Let's not forget about one huge reason they have the tournament and that's to give out scholarships to numerous kids from each region. They are successful at that. And Knott County has given more money to the Scholarship fund than any other county in the 3 Regions!

And that speaks volumes for Knott County and their involvement every year. Are there any other areas willing to give as much as they do to rotate the tournament amongest different locations?
Alfus21 Posted January 20, 2006 Posted January 20, 2006 I just really think the East Kentucky Expo in Pikeville would be a great place for this tournament to be held...Pikeville is a pretty good location and the Expo Center is great and many people would come just see a game in a great atmosphere like that...I just don't think it's fair to make teams from the 15th drive so far every year to the WYMT tournament...It needs to be rotated... Here is the only decent pic. I could find of the Expo with the gym floor on...Globetrotter in the pic....
ATUFF1 Posted January 21, 2006 Posted January 21, 2006 I was a part of the first two WYMT tourneys a Knott Co. I actually met my Wife there in January of 1995. I went every year until they started flip-flopping it with Perry County. Since 1995 I have lived in Perry Co. and would still rather see it where it started. I'm not a big fan of breaking tradition, I think it started at Knott Co. and should have stayed there. They took away from the tourney when they started that IMO. It will never be what it once was, especially for me :thumb: Quote:"Knott Central is a long way from the London/Corbin area. How long has it been since the Redhounds played in the WYMT tournament?" This question made me curious. How long has it been since Knott Co. played in the Cumberland Falls tourney?
LC99 Posted January 21, 2006 Posted January 21, 2006 I would like to see an expanded field to 16 games, and the tourney held at three sites. A western bracket at for example Knox Central. With Rockcastle, Somerset, Pulaski, South, Clay, Cawood, Barbourville, and Leslie Co. And an eastern bracket at Pikeville with Pikeville, PCC, Paintsville, South Floyd, Breathitt Co, Phelps, Prestonsburg and Knott County. Put them into brackets and the semi-finals and finals at KCC on WYMT. Two days to travel to Knott is not too bad, I could see where it could be tough for some teams to make that trip 3 times in one week. Of course if the tourney is moved to holiday break travel is not too much of an issue with no school. Just a thought.
