November 23, 201213 yr And that can be a major problem in Boston. It would be if he were seen as a major signing. He was signed to bat against lefties and pinch hit. He'll be used much like they did Gabe Kapler back in the mid-2000's. With his hustle and charisma he should be a fan favorite provided they forgive him for trying to kill Coco Crisp a few years back.
November 23, 201213 yr Gomes seems like a good guy to have on your team but at 2 years and 10 million that is ridiculous. I can only imagine what Ryan Ludwick will be able to get on the open market.
November 24, 201213 yr I like watching Johnny play, but he really isn't that good. What does he specialize doing? He doesn't have unbelievable power, his speed and defense are average, and he is not a high average or good contact guy. You should be able to find a triple a player to do what he does! Not give him 5 mill a year. All that said I will root for him.

He brings a lot more to the plate than those things you just mentioned. Apparently the Red Sox front office feels the same way.
November 24, 201213 yr You also have to keep in mind the total cost of the platoon. He will likely platoon with Ryan Kalish, a nice young lefty hitter. He is not yet arbitration eligible and will hit right handers very well. He'll also only make around the minimum so they'll have less than six million a year in their left field platoon that could produce 25-30 homers and 80+ RBIs.
