Mayfield 35 Kentucky Country Day 14

Go Big Red!!! Sets up Beechwood v. Mayfield....again.

Mayfield will need to play 4 qtrs instead of just 2 next week. The last 2 weeks, they've been sluggish to start and then took care of business in the 2nd half, but, they'll have to play better.

This game was a 1 TD game in the third quarter, right? That surprised me a little but it looks like the Cards figured it out as the game went on. I am definitely glad to see the win and Mayfield coming to Ft. Mitchell. Looking forward to another opportunity for the Tigers against the Cardinals next week.

I bet you are.

Whats the old saying, "to be the man, you have to beat the man", obvioulsy Mayfield and Mr. Jackson are and have been the man in single A the past few years. Obvioulsy I hope BW can pull off the win, with that being said they are going to have to play a darn near flawless game. Look forward to the matchup in Ft.Michell this Friday, should be a fun game to watch.

Cards come out and shutdown KCD on offense and would pick up a first down or 2 then be forced to punt and would back up KCD. This went on for much of the first quarter until KCD managed a couple of first downs and finally their stud qb found a reciever who took it to the house. They then flipped the field on Mayfield after stopping the Cards offense deep in Cards territory after the kickoff from their scoring drive. This also went on for several possessions. At this time they somehow managed to really stimey the Cards offense until around the 2 and a half minute mark of the second quarter when Mayfield connected on a long RD pass to tie the game. After the score on the kickoff Mayfield recovered the kickoff around the KCD 20 yard line and marched down to score right before half to take a 14-7 lead into the break.

KCD kicked off to start the second half and Mayfield marched down field for a score and a 20-7 lead afer the PAT failed. KCD goes 3 and out and the CArds again march down the field and score and then repeat the trick again on the next series to take a commanding 35-7 lead. The Cards then appear to again be on their way to a score before being held on down at the KCD 1 yardline (by this point the CArds had become conserative on offense and KCD seemed to have tired on defense). KCD then completed a beautiful 99 yard TD pass to make the score 35-14. Mayfield then grinded things out to end it. Penalities again jurt the Cards for the second straight week as 2 nice td's were called back and there were 3 holding penalities.

Guhy had his usual aswome night in the air and Jordon Brown played perhaps his best game ever as a CArds wide out

I followed this reporter, who is from Louisville, on Twitter last night and he was tweeting away until Mayfield took control and then he stopped tweeting. I see todays paper and low and behold it is the Louisville guy and KCD fan so his take on the game is interesting given his prospective

LOUISVILLE— Kentucky Country Day hosted its first state football third-round game in school history on Friday night, but the festivities were spoiled by a veteran Mayfield team in Louisville.

Behind 158 rushing yards and three touchdowns from Jonathon Jackson, and 171 receiving yards and two touchdowns from senior Jordon Brown, the Cardinals (12-1) defeated the Bearcats (11-2) 35-14 in front of a full house on the KCD campus.

Jackson’s third touchdown run of the game, a 26-yard scamper on a 4th & 1 play, sealed the deal and put Mayfield ahead 35-7 with 11:45 to go in the contest. The TD was also No. 30 on the season for the senior, who ground out a big game against a physical Bearcat defense.

“It was a hard-fought win. Everybody that’s left in the playoffs is good, so we have to come out and play every week,” said Jackson.

Despite the big numbers, it was not a cake walk for Jackson.

“They made us earn it,” said Mayfield head coach Joe Morris. “They stacked the box and we were having trouble blocking their outside linebackers. Our bread and butter is kind of a stretch play, and they did a nice job of beating our blocks out there.”

“But we made adjustments, kept pounding and just went at them.”

Morris was complimentary of Jackson’s effort in the face of some difficult circumstances.

“Guys like that just wear on you,” said Morris of Jackson. “He runs the last play just as hard as he runs the first play. It’s hard on high school kids to just keep coming up and tackling (him). I’m glad he’s on our team.”

Mayfield, which trailed Holy Cross at halftime of last week’s second round game, fell behind early again against KCD when Bearcats quarterback Robert Scholtz hooked up with junior Tommy Staffeiri for a 66-yard touchdown reception that gave KCD a 7-0 lead at the end of one quarter.

The Cardinals would respond with a pair of second-quarter touchdowns – a 91-yard pass from Jake Guhy to Deion Jackson and a 5-yard run by Jackson – but went to the locker room only leading by seven points.

Mayfield exploded out of the gate in the second half and scored on it first possession when Guhy found a leaping Brown for a 30-yard strike into the end zone that put the Cardinals ahead 20-7.

Then, following a forced three-and-out, the Cardinals went ahead 28-7 on Jackson’s second touchdown of the game – a six-yard run – and turned the screws on a reeling KCD squad.
