I started the fishing club in 07 I believe!:dancing Still going strong. Could not have made that possible without the help of Coach T as well as Bill Snyder. T was a hell of a fishing coach. My buddy helped me too. Can't take all the credit.

If you all could read my news feed on Facebook it would make you want to cry. Unbelievable how many people's lives he touched. My 500 or so Cov Cath friends on Facebook proved that.

Seeing as the body has been donated to science and will not be buried at this time, I would assume there will be some sort of reception following the Memorial Mass if you're looking to offer your condolences.

I never played basketball but did play baseball at cch and he was my jv coach. I remember one game specifically. I had thrown 7 innings on a Friday and on the next Monday we started our jv tourney and our starter got hurt before the game. T asked if I could go. I said yes and in the 6th I wore out. He came out to get me, didn't say a word and when he got back to the dugout, he wrapped me in the biggest bear hug imaginable never saying a word. Words can't describe what that meant then and still today.

To the Tieman Family,

 

My name is David Henley and I am the former basketball coach at Holmes High School. I would just like to share a couple of thoughts about Coach Tieman and to express my sincere sympathy as you cope with the loss of a true gentleman.

 

When I came to Holmes in the fall of 1997, Coach T was the coach at Covcath. Over the next several years, we had some tremendous games, intense (sometimes overboard!) and exciting. Even though we battled tooth-and-nail, and we both wanted to beat each other, I always knew that no matter what (win or lose!), Coach T would meet me at half-court, look me in the eye and always have gracious words about our kids and to me personally. He probably never knew how much his kind words meant, but they definitely had an impact on my life and my career.

 

Dan Tieman exemplified the word “class.”

 

One day, after he had given-up the head coaching position, he told me he was going to help coach the freshman team…under one condition: he did not want to be involved in tryouts because he wanted no part of cutting kids. I thought to myself, what an incredible man. Always wanting to help, but never wanting to hurt. In my opinion, like Coach T, the worst part of coaching is cutting kids. I am very proud to say I have something in common with Dan Tieman.

 

I realize there is nothing I can say to help ease the hurt you and your family must be feeling right now, but hopefully you will find a way to “celebrate” an incredible man and an incredible life, a life of teaching, mentoring, and leading. Some will say the most accurate measure of a man, is what can be said of him in his “senior” years. Dan Tieman is one of the very, very few men that I have NEVER heard anyone utter a bad word about.

 

Unfortunately, we cannot be there in person to express our sympathy, but please know we are thinking of you and praying for you.

Fellow Colonels,

 

Preparations are now set for Dan Tieman’s Memorial Mass. The Mass will be held this Saturday, November 10 at 10:30 AM in the gym. Doors will open at 9:30 AM and auxiliary parking will be available in The Gardens parking lot and also at Notre Dame Academy. Shuttle busses will run from NDA to CCH.

 

After Mass, we will have a reception in the school. In order to accommodate all of our guests, the doors to both the cafeteria and the main entrance of the school will be open. Alumni are welcome to walk through the school and congregate in the classrooms and hallways in addition to the cafeteria.

 

Coach T was able to make extraordinary men out of ordinary students. He personified the mission of a Covington Catholic education by leading young men in all areas – spiritually, academically, physically and socially. It is because of the direction he instilled in us as students that we are able to be a strong brotherhood long after graduation. This brotherhood is indeed our strength, and it is through this strength that we will come together to rejoice in our fond memories of Dan Tieman’s life.

 

Many of you have asked about making donations in Coach T’s memory. Please know that the family has requested that all donations be made to the Dan Tieman Scholarship Fund that was established at Covington Catholic on the day of his retirement. This scholarship fund is in place to help provide financial assistance to those students that cannot afford a Covington Catholic education.

 

We should all take the time to thank God for having Dan Tieman in our lives. Dan was one of the greatest examples of how we should lead our lives as Christian men.

The rosary service on Tuesday, October 29 will be said in memory of Dan Tieman. October 30 is the first anniversary of his death. Alumni, parents and students welcome. The rosary service begins at 7:30 AM in the Chapel and is over by 7:45.

 

Really wish I could make it. I'll be praying a rosary here in Louisville at 7:30 instead.
