I'm not saying the sign will be effective. It's intent, though, is crystal clear.

 

Yeah, it's intent is to dissuade voter fraud. Again, why would anyone with a brain think a sign like that would stop people who are leagally voting from doing so?

Not sure what was hoped to gain if there is little voter fraud anyway. Are they hoping that members of the black community don't know if they're legal to vote and thus won't vote out of fear? As PP92 stated, unless these billboards are put up over a wide range of communities I think it is an attempt to intimidate along racial lines.

I believe 10 signs were put up, not sure of the spread or demographics of the communities they were put up in. Also in Milwaukee and Cincy.

Apparently they were put up in mostly black and Latino communities so there is no doubt it was targeted along racial lines.

Has there been a long history in this country of legal and social discrimination against blue collar workers that has often prohibited them from legally or safely voting? I'm just saying it isn't the same. I also don't think it's about being "offended."

Is it offensive to mention to any and all that voter fraud is a crime? No.

 

 

Is it offensive to THAT community that is made up of likely Obama voters when there has been no sign of voter fraud? Yes.

I honestly think (maybe naively) that this sign would be put up by this same organization anywhere they felt there was voter fraud, regardless of race of the local constituents. Cleveland was ripe with ACORN voter fraud during the last election and this serves as a reminder to everyone that it is against the law.

 

Same sign should have been put up in Clay County 10 years ago or so as voter fraud was so rampant there that several local officials ended up in prison for voter fraud. Talking to friends in Clay County most people didn't realize it was against the law because they had always done it that way. Buying votes was expected in Clay Co as was absentee fraud...just the way things were done.

I think they do know just not aware of the potential penalty. In some areas, here in KY, voter fraud and illegal campaigning is so common it's not thought of as being a big deal...cause we always do it.

1 - I imagine the implication isn't so much that people think they are voting illegally as it is to say to a group that someone has a tool to make voting a very criminal act. It would not be a new thing for minorities to suffer undue consequences for voting, even if entirely in the right.

 

2 - It's probably easier than you think. Voting isn't exactly a high tech operation. If you registered to vote through a third party you might wonder if they did everything correctly. If you or your polling place has moved there might be some confusion about exactly where you are supposed to vote, especially since procedures and mechanisms vary place to place. Etc.

And that what leads me to my point. If this sign is going to discourage someone from voting who would otherwise be committing voter fraud, it's serving a purpose. If it's going to dissuade someone who is voting legally from voting than that person is a complete idiot.
