As for the bunting not winning championships, I wish everyone could have seen the 2002 semi game against Webster County and their stud pitcher who went on to UK. He threw bunt after bunt into right field. Comical. Krumps kept doing it and Webster's coach didn't like it one bit!! CCH had all of 5 hits that game and scored 10 runs. By bunting. On their way to a title!!

High School kids... I always said the way to beat any HS team regardless of how good they are, think they are, or want you to think they are, is to to play small ball until they can stop you.

That means doing it with two outs, bases loaded, you stud hitter up with 2nd and 3rd and 1 out...

Put the ball in play, make a fielder cleanly pick it up, have him throw a better then average throw to first, and the whole time try and forget somebody is going to score if you dont have a put out.

Cant pull this off at the Bigs, probably cant at the College level but the HS level can be brutal to say the least.

And defending the bunt pulls in the defense and opens up holes to allow for the hits...........

 

Krumps (and Ecks, Michs, Daines) is baseball smart and his players come out with a better understanding of the game of baseball than when they entered the program........

My only question is can it be done on turf since that's where the 9th Region plays? Turf changes that strategy IMO. This works for CCH until they hit the turf. This actually affects a few teams that like to play small ball in the region. Once again this is just an observation.

Small ball is great when used properly. Cooper went with the small ball tactics last year and it cost them in my opinion. Small ball does not work when you use it every single time you have a runner on first. Cooper bunted themselves out of more inninggs last year in my opinion because of small ball. It got to the point where it seeemed everytime we gotr a baserunner we handed the opposing team a garunteed out. It would be done with 1 out also and when already trailing in games they seemed to be digging themselves deeper into a hole.

 

 

Like I said small ball works great when used properly, it doesn't work great when used every single time the opportunity arose to actually use it.

 

Cooper's biggest problem last year was hitting, and when you have your best hitters llaying down bunts everytime a base runner was on base it defeated it's purpose.

 

That's just my opinon. As I stated earlier, I was a huge fan of small ball....when the ssituation called for it,not a fan of using it every single time, especially when down by several runs. I can't think of one game last year that Cooper won because of small ball.

I once saw a kid homer and triple in his first two ABs. 3rd AB occurred with runners on 1st and 2nd. Kid came up and got the SAC signal and no one was surprised.

 

IMO Krumps does it often times just to put pressure on the D. In his mind he's not automatically giving up an out.
