I think that all are going to have to make sacrifices, which I believe his plan tries to accomplish. One would hope that it would least affect the elderly, but there obviously has to be some cuts there for any plan to work.

The Ryan plan impacts everyone negatively( in terms of tax breaks and entitlement programs) but the outcome will be positive for the country as a whole.

This plan discards a needlessly complex and manipulative tax code, replacing it with a simplified mechanism that promotes work, saving, and investment.

 

Provides individual income tax payers a choice of how to pay their taxes – through existing law, or through a highly simplified code that fits on a postcard with just two rates and virtually no special tax deductions, credits, or exclusions (except the health care tax credit).

Simplifies tax rates to 10 percent on income up to $100,000 for joint filers, and $50,000 for single filers; and 25 percent on taxable income above these amounts. Also includes a generous standard deduction and personal exemption (totaling $39,000 for a family of four).

Eliminates the alternative minimum tax [AMT].

Promotes saving by eliminating taxes on interest, capital gains, and dividends; also eliminates the death tax.

Replaces the corporate income tax – currently the second highest in the industrialized world – with a border-adjustable business consumption tax of 8.5 percent. This new rate is roughly half that of the rest of the industrialized world.

Oh come on woodsrider! It's only a problem when it's Ryan's budget....even though no one said his budget would be used. But the media and the left can't get any mileage out of it if we view it in those terms....

No, it doesn't. It eliminates the extra payments that the government paid to insurance companies for Medicare Advantage. That is not a cut to Medicare. It also attempts to control future Medicare costs by limiting future increases in Medicare payments to providers to inflation plus 0.5 percent. ( I think those numbers are accurate, if not please correct me.) Just by coincidence, I believe that the Ryan budget also limits future Medicare payments to inflation plus 0.5 percent. The difference is that the Ryan budget limits the increase in the voucher amount rather than payment amount. There are potential problems with both approaches. If the payments to providers are too low, shortages might develop as doctors and hospitals refuse Medicare patients. If the voucher payments are too low, people won't be able to afford the care.

So we're in agreement then. Obamacare cuts funding to Medicare anywhere from $500B to close to $800B depending on what report you read.

The purpose of this thread was to talk about the plan that made Rep Ryan so well-known. So mentioning what Rep Ryan would do seems like it's quite apropos.

 

Gov Romney can say he's going to use his own plan but THE reason Rep Ryan was selected was because of his reputation on budgets as well as his specific plan.

I understand that but my point was there is a line of thought that Ryan will hurt Romney in states like FL. Also we've already started hearing how Ryan would cut a large amount from Medicare. Why is it being ignored that Obama has already gotten legislation passed that will do just that.
