Haha. You couldn't be more wrong. Almost every team puts a lot of their players on the waiver wire. It does not mean they cut him. If you would have read the article that you posted you would have seen that.

Again, read the article. From August 1st to August 31st players can be put on the waiver wire, if they are claimed the teams have so many as to work out a trade, if not traded the player is pulled from the waiver wire and nothing happens.

Teams have to pass players through revocable waivers to trade them after the July 31st deadline.

Players acquired after August 31st can't play in the postseason.

Teams will often put most of their players on waivers to determine interest, since they don't have to give up every player who's claimed.

Unclaimed players can be traded to any club in August (or even September).

Teams don't have to trade players who are claimed. They can hand the player and his salary over for nothing.

If a team places a player on waivers after he is claimed, but not traded, the team loses the right to pull its player back. In other words, the waivers are revocable at first, but not revocable afterwards.

Clubs have two days to deal claimed players, but they can only negotiate a trade with one team.

If only one team claims a player, he can only be dealt to that team.

If more than one team claims a player, he can only be traded to the claiming team in his league with the worst record.

If a player's only claimed by teams in the other league, he can only be dealt to the claiming team with the worst record.

Teams cannot pass players on the disabled list through waivers.

Of course their trying to get rid of his contract, they realize now it was dumb to sign him to that.

I wouldn't wanna pay a contract like that. Athletes get some of the most ridiculous contracts I've ever seen

Why is this bad? Guys go on waivers often, doesn't mean they are getting cut or anything. It's just another trading strategy and also a chess match sometimes between teams.

The Phils are said to be looking for a team that will give top prospects and not expect the Phils to eat any of the salary.

 

They either change that position or he's in Philly next season.

There is nothing dumb about it. No risk at all to Philly. If they don't get a deal they like (which would need to be HUGE), nothing happens. Almost every team that's not in it will place lots of players on waivers, very few of which ever get moved. With Lee's very short list of teams that he would accept a trade to (I think it is about 8) and Philly's high asking price, this only happens on their terms. If it does happen, they get their system replenished, get some money to sign free agents, and still have Halladay, Blanton, Hamels, and Worley, a very solid front four in their rotation. Literally, hundreds of players get placed on waivers in the beginning of August. Heath Bell, Carlos Pena, Jim Thome, and Carl Crawford are some of the other players who just got placed on waivers.

 

Now if he were designated for assignment, that would be the equivalent of cutting him, and would be monumentally stupid.
