Almost all modern guns are 'semi-automatic'. There is no real definition of an 'assault rifle' because there nothing really different about them from a hunting rifle.

Well I just kind of question things a bit. I've been hunting since I was a teen, and I have never used a semi-automatic gun of any sort to do so. I've toyed with the idea of getting a semi-automatic shotgun, but I haven't as of yet. I really appreciate the clarification on what an assault rifle is - honestly, I do - but I guess what I'm questioning the necessity of is the type of gun that I was mistakenly defining as an assault rifle. What is the need for an average Joe to have access to a semi-automatic rifle that has a detachable mag - particularly a high-capacity detachable mag?

 

I'm not trying to speak out against them as much as I am voicing doubts I'm starting to have in my mind.

So a Remington 7400 is an assault rifle? What about a Beneli R1? For the record if someone was to walk into a theatre I was in and do this I would prefer they have a semi auto rifle then a shot gun.

I would give you a relative "yes" to your questions about the 7400 and R1 being assault rifles. (Admittedly, I'm not sure if they are actually rifled, though.) I'm just struggling to really see why you need a gun that can hold so many rounds and shoot so many shots so quickly.

 

Don't take it the wrong way, I used to own a semi-auto AK and got a kick out of emptying a 30 round clip into a target every now and then...but as far as hunting, I'm yet to come across a situation where I've ever needed more than a couple three shots, maybe.

Both the 7400 and the R1 are semi auto high powered hunting rifles available in a varitey of calibers. The stock mag for both holds, I believe, 5 rounds.

Or a 52-year-old British taxi driver named Derrick Bird butchered 12 and injured 11 others in a four-hour violent spree back in 2010.

Barely a year after Ibrahim Shkupolli stabbed and killed his ex-girlfriend, then went on to a shopping mall in Finland to kill four others.

...the same otherwise "peaceful" Finland, where only about a year earlier, a 22-year old culinary arts student walked into a school and killed 10 people.

 

I could go on

...the Birmingham, England man who killed three back in 2000.

...the Swiss kid who slaughtered 14 at the parliament in Zug in 2001.

...the 29-year-old who killed 11 and injured 6 in South Africa.

...the Slovakian man who killed 7 in a Netherlands shopping mall in 2011.

...or the 23-year-old Australian surfer named Martin Bryant, who shot dead 35 people at a popular tourist attraction there "just because he felt like it" that day.
