He's correct that Jack Morris belongs, and it is a crime he's not in.

 

There's a case that can be made that the aforementioned in the thread title weren't great (although I might disagree about Puckett and Rice), but simply very good. There are a lot of very good, but not great, players in the HOF who don't belong there, if that is Reggie's overall point.

 

Don Sutton was at best a No. 2 guy and was more successful as a No. 3 guy, and only once won 20 games, and could always be counted on for a 14-11 year, his career season average. Niekro lasted forever and piled up numbers, including 274 losses and more than 5,000 hits. Carter was third-best at the position in his era, behind Bench and Fisk, and in some years, Ted Simmons, Darrell Porter or Benito Santiago were better.

 

Puckett and Rice were at the top of their game in their peaks, but didn't have the longevity.

Little trivia.....Who is the ONLY player in Major League history to have 3 consecutive seasons with at least: 200 hits, 100 runs scored, 35 or more HR's, 100 or more RBI's, & hit .315 or better..........Jim Rice '77, '78, & '79.
