3 Reasons Why You Set Up a Friend With a Date

Featured Replies

In my mind I was thinking of a married person but I guess if you are just dating someone that makes sense. Things might be weird for you and your friend if you start dating her down the road.

Who said anything about dating? :D

Can't say that I've done it, but I can see the rationale behind reason #1.

You were the friend that got set up, huh? Nice.

You just hit the nail on the head. I was trying to be discreet.

I've done #1 before. I knew I couldn't have her because of my relationship status so I hooked my friend up with her.

Haven't done #2. Never been in that situation.

#3. Kind of but not really. I enjoy my wife and I going out with other couples so I've set a friend up so we could double date. Not to be in his business though.

I got you, Clizzy. It's no secret that I'm not too discreet. :D

When I was just a young lad, one of the older guys in my fraternity told me about this concept, "Little Sisters". In his wording, the purpose for having a little sister is because you can always get away with flirting and hanging out with them because they are your little sister and your girlfriend can never get mad at you for it. I took his words to heart and found me a really cute freshman when I started my third year of college. Well, a year later, my relationship ending (her doing, not mine) and two months later I was dating this "little sister". Worked like a charm...well until karma bit me in the butt and little sister screwed me over. But still a fun story.

Does it have any relevance to this thread? Probably not, but I'm really bored and counting down until I can get this weekend started (one of my best buddies bachelor parties). Cheers to the weekend!

  Hey, I didn't say I do it! But, I was in high school before, I know how it works.

I had a buddy one time that asked me to go on a double date with him and this girl he was all hot and heavy over and one of her friends. Being a good friend, I bit the bullet and went along. It was an ok night, my buddys girls, friend was ok, nothing special but not horrible either, but I certainly didnt want anything beyond acquaintances with this girl. Eventually the buddy and his girl left on their own way and there I was stuck with this girl by myself and now I had to take her home, yeah me. So I take her home and she invites me in and we are just talking (as I am figuring out my polite exit plan) and then I get to meet her roommate. HELLO ROOMMATE!!!!!!! Her roommate and I dated for almost a year, till she took a job out of state. My point is, sometimes a friend set up is a horrible idea, sometimes its great, and sometimes, its just a small step leading you to great things.

I set one of my best friends and his current wife up for completely wholesome reasons and none of the 3. She was talking about what she was looking for in a guy and I knew my buddy would be perfect for her. 4 years later they might be the happiest couple I know and two of my absolute favorite people to hang out with.

I spit water out on this one. Good work.

Were you in a relationship at the time? And by "relationship" I mean dating one girl and not messing around with anyone related to your landlord.

I was listening to a talk show yesterday and the guy had a theory that said there are ONLY 3 reasons why a friend sets up another friend of the same sex with a date.

1. Most common - You are digging that person but you can't have them because you're already in a relationship so you set your friend up.

2. You view your friend's standards as less than yours and set them up with a person you would not date.

3. You're a busy body who likes to be in your friends' business.

He claimed that all scenarios can be put into one of those 3.

Thoughts?

Mehh...I don't think so. I've set up 4 couples now that have eventually ended up getting married (including my brother and his wife). I'm not saying that there aren't occasions where people have set up friends for the reasons stated above, but I can say, honestly, that none of the couples I set up were for any of those reasons. They were all good people who I knew wanted to find someone to make them happy, and I did what I could to help with that. Worked out well in the end.

Figured this was as good a place as any to mention...I know someone who was set up on a blind date with his ex-wife (after they were exed).

Honestly, I'm having trouble remembering. I think I was in somewhat of a relationship but one I knew wasn't going anywhere. Nothing to have prevented me from taking the plunge myself.

The other theory he had is that very few people who set people up think they're in any of the 3 categories.
