Cothron Is Hired As Somerset High School Basketball Coach.

Congradulations to the school and new coach.

Congratulations to Jeff and welcome back.

The problem with most independent school systems, they love hiring their own, it always bites them. Wondering if someone can give me some insight, didnt he coach at Somerset once before and leave? Then take a job at Southwestern and quit in October? Maybe it is a different Cothran? Somerset has always wanted local people to coach basketball, and they never hire the most qualified people. Thacker was a homerun hire! Besides that its been rough. AD used to be the head coach and pretty sure that he made the call on this hire, sometimes question his thinking especially since he once was the head coach himself. But Somerset will always be the stepping stone in the county and this proves why.

Excellent hire by Somerset in getting Jeff Cothron! Congratulations! I look forward to seeing him bring the winning tradition back to the Briar Patch!

I am not a fan of recycling past coaches, especially one that left after just one year............Curious to see how this plays out.

Somerset is no more Independent than any county school, the term independent only refers to a school system within a county that is not part of that counties school system...ie Danville, Middlesboro, Corbin, Monticello, Highlands, Glasgow ect. So I'm not sure what your independent comment has to do with anything. The AD CoachTucker was the Basketball Coach for both boys and girls as well as coaching tennis at the school...why does that make him unqualified as you implied to make this hire. I don't know Jeff Cothron other than he was a few years behind me in school and I recognize him when I see him, so I'm not here to qualify him as the best coach available for this job. But the rest of your logic seems to be lacking.

Independent school systems have more pride in general, and almost always go with a hometown guy is what I was saying. I dont think that Mr. Tucker is unqulaified to hire someone, I know him well, I just think that it almost ensures that you will get a hometown guy as your coach. You should want the most qualified person for the job I would think. One of the reasons for the hire was to hope that Jeff could bring some kids back to Somerset that left for Pulaski. Not because he was the best for the job. I think he will do a good job at least for Somerset I hope. He has to be better than what you had. Which you have to admit a real questionable hire that has cost Somerset players and years of basketball. Who made that hire? I think Mr. Tucker. Somerset has a chance to be good the next couple years and get someone in there that will work with the youth and continue to build. I hope that Jeff is that guy.

That wasn't a local hire and how did that work out??? I'm sure Coach Tucker was involved but it seemed as if past principal played a huge role in that hire, I believe the coach came from the same school as the last principal but I may be wrong.

This is the first time since 1996 that Somerset has gone with an alumni so I don't think they are always in the business of hiring their own. Cothron was the most qualified of all the applicants (Thacker did not apply for the job as mentioned in your previous post). There were 3 applicants interviewed. 2 had head coaching experience and 1 had only been an assistant. Of the 2 that had head coaching experience, one was Cothron and the other had only been a head coach for a year. Thus, bias or not, they probably made the correct decision. You also referred to Mr. Tucker as making the previous hire when in fact it was the superintendent who made the decision to hire his friend, trumping the recommendations of the committee. I do agree with you that that hire set Somerset back. But, I am glad we can move on from the past and I look forward to the era of Jeff Cothron.

It was the superintendent, not principal. They both worked at Hart Co. together before Daniels went to Rowan Co. Then Somerset decides to hire the principal from Rowan. Crazy!?!

I thought Murray was behind that hire, not Dr.Wallace...didn't know she was involved with the hiring of Daniels. Was Daniels hired before Wilson Sears left? Seems as if Daniels was so impactful I can't recall when he was hired...LOL

...
It was Sears. It was one of his final decision before he retired.
