That 3000 hits gets you in...

 

Everything is thrown off by the steroids accusations a lot of guys are carrying these days. All things being equal, 3000 and 500 are two numbers that should definitely be automatic tickets to the Hall. In fact, due to the steroids accusations, I'd say that his 3,000 get him in and his 500 are keeping him out. FWIW, I'd vote for him.

I understand what's keeping him out. I guess what I'm trying to get at is that with the writers policing it now I don't think there are ANY benchmarks anymore...

 

I'd have made Palmeiro a first-ballot guy. Though anyone I'm voting for is a what I consider a first-ballot guy. All FKYW's HOF has is first-ballot guys. I don't get into the silly notion of withholding a vote so a guy won't be a "first-balloter".

3,000 hits being automatic Hall of Fame...I doubt if Palmeiro ever makes it to Cooperstown. If he does, then I'll make the argument that Peter Edward Rose should make it in. To me, using steroids is a lot more damning then betting on baseball and/or your own team. I guess the difference in the writers or veterans committee's collective minds is that using steroids does not attach a lifetime suspension where what Pete did does.

No doubt, but that's a statistic that comes with a lot of baggage these days.

I'd let them all in but I am pro-steroids also. I wish my batters on my fantasy team would get on roids. Ever since I talked smack to FKW my squad has gone downhill. I'm barely beating him now. Smh....karma.

Just looked up some numbers on it. At the close of the first 125 years of major league baseball, the 500-home-run club had 15 members. Over the next 10 years, it grew by 66%, to 25. The steroids era clouds everything associate with home run numbers. Very sad, because steroids notwithstanding, those numbers still mean something as far as I'm concerned.

UKMF has forced me to reconsider my vote. I'm not sold on Biggio who crossed the 3k threshold.

Clyde, if Roberto Alomar was a HOF'er, so was Craig Biggio.

It would seem that 3,000 hits would make it pretty certain that a player will be enshrined into the Major League Baseball Hall of Fame. Of the 28 members of the 3,000 hits club 85.7% are currently in the hall of fame. Interestingly only 50% of the members of the 4,000 hits club are enshrined. :idunno:

 

The only 3 besides Rose who have not been elected into the hall are Palmerio, Biggio, and Jeter. I think Palmerio deserves to be in the hall of fame, but I can understand the backlash that he has received. Biggio will be eligible in 2013, and while I'm not sold on him personally, I think his odds of enshrinement are fairly good simply due to the 3,000+ hits. Obviously Jeter, should be a first ballot shoe in as soon as he is eligible.

What's not to like about Biggio? 5th all time doubles and 2nd in HBP.
