March 19, 201214 yr This documentary seems a pretty pertinent in this discussion. Give it about 90 minutes if you have the time to watch. First Kill: Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, Part 4, Part 5, Part 6, Part 7, Part 8 It's a very blunt and disturbing look into the psyche of numerous Vietnam soldiers.
March 19, 201214 yr It was disclosed today that prior to joining the military the guy was in the financial services business and bilked a couple out of $1M and never repaid it as ordered.
March 19, 201214 yr I really really hope this guy meets his maker. Losers like this give our military men and women a bad name.
March 22, 201214 yr The soldier doesn't deserve death penalty. He deserves an apology from our Government, by President Bush and Obama. The kid did 4 tours.

March 22, 201214 yr I know a few guys who have done 4 hitches who would disagree with you. We can compare folks we know. The would disagree with the 4 people you know. I am not saying this young man shouldn't be punished. I am saying his mind surely has changed over 4 tours of duty. I am praying for this young man and every other man and women that is in the field of Battle.

Well, I'm certainly not familiar with whether or not this Staff Sgt. Bales' enlistment, but the perspective of several soldiers I know regarding the number of tours they are assigned is that active duty tours are part of being a soldier. If you don't want to be deployed, don't become a soldier. If you don't like animals, don't become a veterinarian. I don't think that 4 tours of active duty deployment didn't probably have something to do with this, and I don't mean to sound like I want soldiers to be in battle or to see the things they see day to day, but to a certain extent, it's a hazard of the job.
March 22, 201214 yr He deserves the needle. Is his combat duty the reason he swindled people out of over a $1M too?

My only disagreement with that Colonel is the expectation of our military leaders to keep using these troops over and again. Current soldiers have logged way more battlefield/front time than any other generation of soldiers in our history. They've spent longer in combat situations than WW II veterans did. Even more time than Civil War Vets. That's the impact that should keep the saber rattling to the minimum from our leaders IMO.

I think that years from now we as a country will learn that there is a limit as to how much combat a human can handle and still function in the world. My guess is 4 will cross that line.
March 26, 201214 yr Anybody see the interview with his wife and Matt Lauer? Let the conspiricy theroies begin. All the talk on several programs I have listen too today is that timelines dont add up and that he is the fall guy for something much bigger.
March 26, 201214 yr Evidence now suggests that Bales left base, killed some Afghans, returned to the base, left again about an hour or so later , and killed more.
March 26, 201214 yr Evidence now suggests that Bales left base, killed some Afghans, returned to the base, left again about an hour or so later , and killed more. Does that seem odd to anyone?
March 26, 201214 yr Does that seem odd to anyone? Yes. Not sure though if it helps or hurts the "insane" defense.
