article How Unique is Your School's Nickname?
broadcaster240 replied to gchs_uk9's topic in KY Football (High School)
When we moved to Madisonville, I didn't think much about its nickname...especially when I found there was another "Maroons" (Pulaski County) on the other side of the state. I did know that the University of Chicago (an original member of the Big Ten) was the Maroons and Mississippi State had been as well. At a game in Clarksville, TN one night, their play-by-play guy asked, "What is a Maroon anyway." So I'll let Merriam-Webster take it from there. Maroon | Definition of Maroon by Merriam-Webster Dictionary by Merriam-Webster: America's most-trusted online dictionary › dictionary › maroon Maroon definition is - a fugitive black slave of the West Indies and Guiana in the 17th and 18th centuries; also : a descendant of such a slave. -
What was your go-to cartoon growing up?
broadcaster240 replied to Randy Parker's topic in BGP Break Room
Though everyone else in my class did, we didn't have a television when I was growing up. So I'll list my favorite comic strip: Gil Thorp. -
Congrats on the improvement, newark. I have just the opposite problem: have lost over 50 pounds in the last four years, and doctors are constantly saying "eat all you can." Taste buds are shot and stomach isn't happy. Durn cancer.

Cubs at Reds (6/28-6/30)
broadcaster240 replied to futurecoach's topic in Major League Baseball (MLB)
Tip of the cap to the Reds for winning all three of the series so far with the Cubs (2-to-1 each time) this year. The record isn't sparkling, but they are only 5 1/2 games behind the division leaders. Lots of teams wish they could say that. -
Well said, sumo. May "the peace that passes understanding" be yours.

What was the first organized sport you ever played?

Peanut League baseball, age 8 (I believe.) No T-Ball nor Coach Pitch in the '50's. -
Open Job: Dawson Springs

Good luck Jim! He was a terrific competitor on a couple of very good South Hopkins teams in the mid-90's, and his father was on Earlington's 1967 state championship team and made all-state tournament and the Kentucky All-Star team. P.S. GC, doesn't that make four head coaches in the Commonwealth named Jim Hicks? -
BGP QOTD: Yes or No - Can you drive a stick shift?
broadcaster240 replied to Randy Parker's topic in BGP Break Room
My father gave us an automatic when we got married, but I bought sticks from then on until we moved to suburban Nashville...at the age of 50. I rode a small motorcycle from age 16...which made learning the stick on a car a whole lot easier. -
So, actually, same high school...just a new name. That happened a lot in the 1960's when consolidation was all the rage and schools would change the name to "____ County." It usually included a consolidation, but...like in this case...not always. As one of those "diggers" who likes to keep track of all kinds of history, it's a bit of a kink in the works. Thanks for the info, guys..especially the link from Colonels to the previous thread.

Madisonville's Joe Curry was a terrific football player/athlete. A defensive end, he had 3 fumble recoveries and 3 interceptions his Senior year when the Maroons went 10-0 in the regular season...giving up only four points a game He would have been a terrific receiver, though the coaches chose to keep him (and the rest of the starters) as one-way players. He was also the long snapper on punts. He was 1st team all-state by the Courier-Journal and Associated Press. According to the C-J's poll of Kentucky's six major colleges, Curry was the 2nd best high school prospect in the Commonwealth behind only Mark Higgs of Owensboro. He played (some) at Kentucky. (A track star, he was also the starting center on Madisonville's 32-2 basketball team in '84 that lost to eventual champion Logan County in the state tournament semi-finals.)

Albert Pujols Reaches 2000 RBI Mark

I thought Albert's response was cool - "That's O.K.; let him have it." or some such. Great to see a classy guy succeed as he has. -
NFL Draft Scene in Nashville

Traffic is almost always a bear here. Three interstates going through the city doesn't help. -
