  1. Most OSU fans are disappointed. They’re disappointed at the players who knowingly broke the rules, at Smith, and at Tressell for not doing the right thing. However, there is optimism at what the future may hold.
  2. Good question and if I had a great answer I could lead the reform of college football. My best guess would be to punish those involved and the almighty dollar. In some respects the NCAA does both and in others they don’t. I’m not blasting the NCAA for handing out the ban, just the affect the ban has on those not involved in the violations. I’m not just referring to OSU, but USC and any other school in a similar situation.
  3. For what it's worth, Smith should have left with Tressel IMO.
  4. I agree that the way the NCAA punishes teams is both inconsistent and questionable. It is not fair that players and coaches who were not involved in the crime have to serve the punishment, but until the schools and NCAA drastically changes it will continue. As Buckeye fans, we have a lot to look forward too, albeit a year later than we might have hoped.
  5. A one year bowl ban is tough, but not totally surprising. 2012 will be a good year for Meyer to institute his schemes and philosophy and have the Buckeye’s ready to compete for a Big Ten and National Title in 2013.
  6. Another great pickup for the Buckeyes. Everybody knew Urban was a good recruiter, but I did not see him having this huge of an impact right out of the gate with the NCAA ruling pending.
  7. My fault for using facts and sources in my argument. When and if Ohio State is found over-singing recruits then I suppose we will see what the Big Ten’s response would be. However, over-signing is not and has never been a major issue with the Big Ten because of the league rules preventing it. Unlike the typical NCAA violations we all hear about, over-signing isn’t something that can be hidden since it is common knowledge who is on a team and who leaves and how many scholarships there are.
  8. 1. Yes, over-signing is a way of “hedging” against transfers or eligibility issues. It is also a way for coaches to evaluate, choose, and then squeeze out players after they enroll to make the 85 NCAA limit. 2. “offends the S-A”? So, it is the students fault that a coach promises him a scholly and then reneges? That’s ridiculous. 3. The SEC did pass a new over-signing policy in 2008 and again this spring and proposed changes to the NCAA rule, one of which was a soft cap. To say that the SEC didn’t pass new rules is incorrect. Agree, there are loopholes. Like having 16 open schollys, but still signing 25 recruits, thus over-signing by 9. 4. The Big Ten cap is a hard cap of 85, not a soft cap like the SECs. There are numerous articles about this subject. http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2011/writers/andy_staples/06/03/sec-oversigning-cap/index.html http://oversigning.com/testing/ http://www.al.com/sports/index.ssf/2011/06/change_in_oversigning_rules_wo.html
  9. Royals is referring to the practice of over-signing, not the 85/25 NCAA scholarship rule. Google over-signing and there is a plethora of information about the topic. The SEC passed more stringent rules regarding over-signing this year. Prior to this year the SEC led all conferences in the practice of over-signing recruits, Saban and Miles were two the conference leaders in the practice. Bringing 30 or more athletes to campus with a NLI for 25 scholarships. It gives coaches an advantage because they can bring two players to camp for one scholarship and basically cut the one that performs worse. On the flip side, it really hurts the recruits who end up without a scholarship. The Big Ten banned the practice in 1956, but modified the rule in 2002 to allowed up to 3 over-signees to the 85 scholarship limit , that’s still not the same as 3 over each year’s 25.
  10. Miller has the potential to be a great college QB, but he has a long way to go for that and even farther to be anything close to an NFL QB. He isn’t going anywhere for at least two more years and probably 3.
  11. They only need a couple of those 344. Seems fairly realistic to me, especially with Meyer as coach.
  12. I really don't see a 5 star QB going to the Buckeyes this year and sitting behind Miller for 2 or 3 years.
  13. Must be those ugly girls in parkas?
  14. Gee I don’t know, let me go find an ugly girl in a Parka to ask. Actually, you know very well what the Buckeye’s record is. The vast majority of Florida’s success has come under two coaches, Spurrier and Meyer. Before Spurrier, between the two, and after Meyer they haven’t been nearly as prominent. Did all of the speedy athletes not go to Florida before Spurrier or since Meyer left? Coaching, recruiting the right players for the right positions, and scheme plays a huge role in success. Not just bikinis and warm weather.
  15. So Florida’s success had nothing to do with coaching, recruiting the right players, and scheme? Funny, considering how they did this year. Also funny how their fastest skill player in 2008 wasn’t even from Florida or that OSU had 6 starters this year from Florida, but of course NOBODY from Florida wants to go to Ohio State. Of course the majority of Florida’s roster is from Florida, just like the majority of OSUs roster is from Ohio or Texas’s roster is from Texas.
  16. The do not have two “staffs”, they have Meyer and the current staff and a waiver from the NCAA to allow Meyer to recruit. The same waiver that Illinois has applied for this year and other schools in the same situation have routinely received like Michigan between Carr and Rich Rod.
  17. Se’Von Pittman (DE) who was committed to Michigan State and Tommy Schutt (DT) committed to Penn State both decommitted yesterday and gave their verbal to the Buckeyes. Looks like Meyer is making an immediate impact on the recruiting trail and placing a high priority on the D-Line. :thumb:
  18. Not sure about that. I grew up in Ohio eating potted meat and mayo sandwiches. On special occasions we would have fried SPAM or TREAT and mustard sandwiches.
  19. That is how it’s been since the merge and Cochran’s flip. It’s been pretty obvious who is going home every week, even though they edit the episode to make it seem like some big move is going to happen, it always ends up being the person we all suspected in the first place. I hope Ozzy wins out and takes home the money. The only other person I would want to win is Sophie.
  20. Good point, in order for the penalty to be assessed after the TD it would have to be a dead ball foul. However in the case of holding or a block in the back, the foul may have allowed the player to score, in the case of celebration the action in no way gave the offense an unfair advantage. That would be my reasoning for assessing the foul the same as a dead ball foul. Agree, it would inconsistent, but that inconsistency is no worse than the inconsistency of how penalties are sometimes called because of the subjective nature of officiating in general.
  21. That’s a great point. I say change these rules so in situation where the player is flagged for celebrating a TD, the penalty is enforced on the kickoff or extra point and not remove the points from the board, possibly deciding the outcome of the game.
  22. If Alabama wins they get the trophy simply because they won when it counted the most. It’s not how you start, it’s how you finish. Does it mean that Alabama is the undisputed best team in college football? No, only that they were better on that particular day when it counted the most.
  23. I honestly don’t know if OSU would beat Bama and will never know, therein lies the problem.
  24. From a fan perspective, it would be an interesting matchup. However, the precedence it might set could cause all kinds of uproar. It would be a BCS like system of the two top teams as voted by polls playing in a championship.
  25. I agree completely, WKU got hosed. Who’s to say that even with a win over Indians State that they still wouldn’t have been picked. Bottom line is that WKU is located in the wrong state when the two bowls in main contention are in Florida and Louisiana and the other two eligible teams from the Sun Belt are from those two states.
