  1. :thumb: That's funny right there and sooo true. I won't say who would have been first but I have a pretty good idea who would have.

    Congrats to St. X!!!

You forget half our male enrollment is in drama, chess, hi-q, golf, swimming, yearbook, and don't know how to hold a football.....but yes we'd love to have an annual with the Blue Beards.

  2. Tigers, enough with the bulletin board type swipes at Trinity. Mr. Beach was quoted as saying in the paper that after looking at the film from game 1 the Tigers were "lucky" to have won that game. I agree. Trinity won't need to run the ball if our secondary gets torched the way they did in the first half and Trinity eliminates a couple mistakes. Its time to put up or shut up. Go Tigers!!

  3. Too late, bill. They are already that arrogant.

Most X/T players and the diehard fans are very excited to be taking a road trip to BG....gives the game more of a playoff/championship feel instead of just part duex of the regular season meeting. Besides, the Pizza Palace has not been kind to the Tigers as of late and we are hoping a change of scenery does us good.

As to our arrongance Hearsay....I suppose a good number of us are. But, lest you forget, not all of us were born and bred in this big megaglopolus that some call "L-Ville". Some of us crept in late from the far corners of the Commonwealth and still hold allegiance to the counties our ancestors settled. So, you see, some of us do realize there is a great land beyond the borders of Jefferson County called "Kentucky" and we are not so "arrogant" to believe that the football playoffs should be scheduled at the convenience of St.X and Trinity.

  4. Even if everyone played in their own class, the level of competition is equivalent (theoretically) because of the class system. That is how it was designed. However, many of these young men played on teams that played against teams from larger classes. So if anything, the smaller schools that played 4A, 5A and 6A teams were playing against a higher level of competition using your theory, whereas 6A teams never played above their level, they only played at it.

Good point JJ... For me, Mr. Football should be the "best" football player regardless of school size, team record or player position. Not many lineman win the award....but if for example a little ole class A school happened to have the #1 ranked defensive end in the USA, with offers from Florida, USC, Texas, etc..that kid should be the leading candidate for Mr. Football unless there is another skilled player, like a Shaun Alexander, who is also ranked high nationally. Not saying College Scout rankings should be the deciding factor, but in my mind if you have to decide who the best football player is and you have to pick between a lineman from a class A school headed to play for the Gators and a QB from a class 6 school headed to say Morehead St. or Marshall I would vote for the lineman because he is the better football player--he excelled at his position to a greater degree than the QB did.

  5. Saw 5 innings of a fall intrasquad game....based on that limited observation time I was impressed with the UK pitching, defense was solid, hitters seemed overmatched at times, Luke Maile had two hits and threw out a runner trying to steal second. I'd be surprised if UK didn't find a way to get his stick in the lineup on a regular basis. I'm not a CC or NKY guy, just a neutral observer's opinion from 5 innings of one scrimmage.

  6. I thought someone told me that Bironas didn't start playing football until college? He played soccer while in high school?

I've followed this rivalry for a good number of years and I honestly don't remember hearing about Bironas until he kicked that 60 yarder a few years ago for the Titans. But, there were some foggy years at UK where I wasn't reading the Curious Journal on a regular basis and could have missed his name in the boxscores. I'm sure CR or RP will have the answer to us shortly.

  7. Is there any position that X does not have the advantage?

Receiving Corps--Name three Tiger receivers you would take over Melillo, Quick or Nix.

Someone from the Rock side sandbaggedly suggested the Rocks were without marquee players whilst the Tigers were chalk full of Duece Finches.... IMVHO, Neal, Hall and McMurray are D1 prospects as are Nix, Bishop and Quick. I think the neon gas is running about the same for both.

  8. St.X has a talent edge for sure! I have said this before if Buehner is 100% the Tigers should win this game. If he is less than 100% it will be very close. But if you have followed the senior & junior classes the last few years and saw the regular season game you would have to give the talent edge to St.X we will have to see if it translates to a win but my bet is on the Tigers.

Good point about Buehner, I agree. I was not at Greenwood, but on the radio they made the comment that he looked like he was still limping.

  9. Both teams have equal talent in my opinion. It's a game for the kids and who wants it more? Plain and simple.

Well stated, but win or lose I will not say that the kids on the winning team just "wanted it more" out of respect for kids on the other side who may have wanted it just as much. I have seen over the years very talented opponents of X and T basically roll over and quit after they get down. Rarely do I see less than maximumm effort from Rock and Tiger players in any game they play, much less a rivalry state championship game. Rarely do you see either an X or T team quit regardless of score. Mental mistakes(jumping offsides) and concentration mistakes(dropping an INT or fumbling the ball) can and do happen to kids who are giving max effort. Some would even say that by "wanting it" so bad you can play tight which can contribute to those kind of mistakes. I agree there is plenty of talent on both teams and I think the team that is able to execute without making crucial mistakes will win this one.

  10. It has to be a pretty rough week for the X faithful, and Coach Glazer. The have to know that Beatty is coming full bore at them again and they have to be worrying about the results of the last few years. I recently heard Glazer say at a parish booster club meeting that he still thinks that X had the best team in 05 and 07, just keep thinking that and the Rocks will just keep rolling. If X dosen't win this year it may very well be three more years before they get another chance the Rocks are loaded for years. GO ROCKS 20:dancingpa:ylsuper::notworthy:

As to Glaser's comments at a parish booster club, if true, one could interpret that as a "mea culpa", ie he and his staff had a couple of their most taleneted teams but didn't make the right sideline calls to get it done. Should he have said, "Trinity was hands down the better team, we just got plumb lucky beating them in the regular season in 05 and 07?" Whatever his motive, it's certainly not flattering to himself or his coaches to say things like that.

  11. Let's not all pretend we don't know what has happened the last 4 years....the pressure is all on X. Favored??? Who cares?? Means nothing excpet for those who live in Vegas. The bottom line is Trinity has made adjustments in personnel that will make this game look nothing like the first game. As a wise poster said earlier, the game will probably come down to turnovers--or who doesn't make them at crucial times. If big turnovers don't happen then I think the game hinges on the ability of X's secondary to not give up the big play and to not allow Trinity to methodically pick them apart by playing 10 yards off Quick and Co...Not an easy task. Offesnively for X, ball security has to be emphasized this week. We fumble like we have the last couple weeks we can kiss this one goodbye. Good luck Tigers!!

  12. This discussion is about speed at the skilled positions.

Simon Kenton had trouble with Henry Clay's speed in their only loss back in September. They had a few too many turnovers as well.

I have gone on the record as saying Henry Clay is loaded with speed at the skilled position. Also, it is not one or two blurs, it is seven or eight blurs.

Listen, St. X is the best team in the state, in my opinion. Highlands is the second best. St. Xavier would beat Henry Clay this season nine times if they played ten games against each other. Even as mighty as the Tigers of St. Xavier are this season, their skilled position speed is no match for Henry Clay's.

They are not faster running a straight line, a zig, a zag, in a track meet, sideways, or backwards. St. X is without a doubt superior in other areas.

It is obviously difficult for some narcissistic St. X fans to accept, but it is the truth and you can take it to the bank.

    StrongO,

I'll take your word that HC has X outclassed in pure speed this year and next at the skilled positions. With that being said, I'll still take X's skilled players plodding along at 4.6, breaking tackles, juking tackles and making tackles. To me its like your saying you'd rather have seven or eight "Willie Gaults" on your team instead of 4 or 5 Emmit Smiths because the Willie Gaults would be no match for the Emmit Smiths. I just disagree.

  13. "St. Xavier is obviously a good football team, but in no way do they have the skilled position speed that Henry Clay has.."

StrongO, I take no issue with the "track" speed of HC being better than St.X(though X does have an athlete who does not run track but who has runs a legitimate 4.40). But I will say that I don't believe "track speed" always equates to the same degree of football field game speed. A track kid could be a full 10th faster than a football player on the track...but put pads and helmet on both and the footrace could have a different outcome. In addition, very few football plays involve a straight line dash. Cutting ability, balance, vision, strength, size, absorbing contact are all huge factors in a players ability to make plays on both sides of the ball. I guess my opinion, given the score of the scrimmage and what I know about X, is that the football speed between X and HC is much closer than what you suggest. Not saying X could beat them in a relay, but for zigging and zagging, bouncing off people, stopping, accelerating (things skilled players must do well) I would take X's 4 fastest football players over any 4 from HC.

Out of curiosity, how many of the HC speedsters will play football at the D1 level?

  14. I agree with everything you said. Except the very last word... victory. I just think this game will be the game everyone is talking about on Saturday morning, afternoon and evening. This one will be a close one ...SK will be on top at the sound of the whistle.

(That reminds me, when my dad ref'd highschool ball for about 20 years, they actually used a "blank gun" to end the games. Oh my, how things have changed. Now a days one would be arrested for having such a device on a school campus!)

Halloween night 2001, Meade County upset an X team in the first round of playoffs. X's only loss going into that game was 28-20 to Male. They had defeated eventual state champion Trinity by a touchdown in the regular season. So, yes, expecting a victory means nothing--the victory will have to be earned on the field.

  15. St. X fans are sure looking past everyone though...In comparison to college football to St. X fans X is like mighty USC year in and year out and the game against SK is like USC vs San Jose St in which USC would dominate...But really this game is like USC vs Stanford in which X has more talent and depth and tradition but Stanford comes into there house and knocks off the almighty USC something like 55-21 idk exactly but it happened on saturday...This friday Sk will do the same thing to ST.X because upsets happen especially when the gap in team talent isn't what its made out to be, YOU PLAY TO WIN THE GAME!!! Go NEERS

X is capable of being upset by SK, turnovers etc.., anything can happen. IF it does happen it won't be because X fans were looking past SK and it certainly won't be because the players or coaches were looking past SK. Coach Glaser may have his faults, but easing up, looking past an opponent, whatever you want to call it is NOT one of them. This X team understands that SK is blocking their path to WKU and must be defeated. I fully expect the Tigers will play with great intensity and come away with a victory.
