  1. Dateline 2037

Is this the year Holy Bishop DeSales (formerly Bishop David, DeSales and Holy Cross of Louisville) finally gets over the hump and wins the first state football title in the combined schools histories?

Or is this year that Coach Glaser steps down after 58 years of leading the St. X Tigers in a valiant effort to match the 33 State Titles of archrival Trinity (The Tigers have won 11 straight after luring Coach Coverdale away from the Rocks with a Head Coach in Waiting offer)?

Alas, can the Highland Bluebirds, playing up in 3A with a male enrollment of 23 boys (all of whom play football and run sub 4.5 40's) earn their 34th State Championship to maintain their all-time lead over the Rocks?

    Stay tuned.

  2. The year is 2037.

Highlands vs. St. X thread ...

Post #4,754. Oxnard the third writes ..."I remember that team like it was yesterday. St. X. would have kicked Highlands butt. Do you think 2038 might finally be the year the Bluebirds can fit the Tigers on the schedule for the 2038 season?"

Post #4,755. jbwill5 replies ... "You don't remember squat. AC just got inducted into the Pro Hall of Fame. I don't see any of the 2009 Tigers there. And as to the schedule, Ryle asked for a fourth game on the 2038 schedule so we gave it to them. They are determined to be the best and four games versus the Birds is the best way to get ready for the playoffs."

    :laugh::laugh::laugh:

  3. I know D1 talent when I see it.

Blue Magic, you said he was a "fantastic" defensive catcher earlier...since you "know D1 when you see it" may I ask some questions about this young man-- is he D1 defensively? Is it just his hitting that will prevent him from playing D1? When looking at catchers do D1 schools place more emphasis on their defense, offense, or are both considered equally important? I've heard some D1 schools really look at POP times for catchers, more so than batting average or slugging percentages, is this true? If POP is important, what is this young man's POP? I wish I could accept your assessment that you "know D1 talent when you see it", but you see I don't know who you are. You could be the greatest catching scout known to mankind that's never missed on a player...or you could just be an average joe that's never played or coached the game beyond Knothole. In fairness to the young man you "know" is not D1 and have been so bold as to say so publicly it might be decent of you to give some reasoning beyond "I know D1 when I see it".

  4. FT you forgot ROLLER and Schneider, hopefully I didn't miss anyone else.

Nor did X have Neal, Buehner, Sears, Jones, Karrer, Lawson, Jordan, Dorsey, Barrito or Fields. But I agree, whose better remains a matter of opinion as opposed to FACT...since the 2010 Birds and Tigers never squared up.

  5. :lol::lol::lol::lol:

This year it would have been your worst nightmare.

Touche, lol...but seriously did this Best Ever Group of 2010 Birds beat Louisville X or Louisville Trinity as Freshmen, JV's or Varsity? It's hard say you're the "best ever" when you haven't beaten the best or even played the best.

  6. As per the bolded,I'm sure the acadmic students are just thrilled about you calling them names on a public forum. Do you think Highlands has some of the clubs and teams, other than football , that you speak of ? Yes they do!!!!

The only names I will be calling these students is "Dr." and "Your Honor"...there's no shame at all in being part of these groups. My point is that there are only so many football players in a given area. You can talk student numbers all you want, but as a Highlands supporter I would think you of all people would champion the idea that its "not the size of the dog in the fight, but the size of the Fight in the dog."

  7. HHS won 28-0....

There you go...08 version of Best Team Ever beat 3A Central by 4 td's. If we say Highlands was the best non 6A team ever would that suffice? See, it's just hard to give them the title of "Best Ever in Ky" when they didn't beat two schools in KY, X and T, who are considered by many to be pretty good football schools.

  8. Give Highlands 1300-1500 boys to choose from then we could play in the BCS championship game every year.

Okay...we'll give you 900 of our drama, music, chess, french club, yearbook, band, golf, swimming, tennis and just general academic nerd students...good luck with winning the BCS with those guys. You might have better luck suiting up some of the more athletic girls at Highlands.

BTW, Hoosier, any luck on running down how many wins the Best Ever of KY had over Louisville X, Trinity, Moeller, Elder and Cincy X? We all know about Cincy X this year.

  9. I respect everyones opinion on this subject . One more question , if this class of seniors played in 3 A where they belong ,who would come closer to 4 TD's of beating them ? Highlands only played 5A and 6A schools in the the last 4 years with the exception of Beechwood (if my memory is correct).

How bad did last year's version of Best Team Ever beat 3A Central?

  10. The Tigers should play that schedule, they are a 6A team. Highlands is a 3A school playing in 5A. :idunno:

The question I posed wasn't rhetorical, I really want to know how many times this 2010 class of Birds played Trinity, Louisville X, Moeller, Cincy X, and Elder over their career. I think the question is very relevant to the subject when a HHS fan lays claim to that group being the "best ever in KY" because of 4 year record of 54-1. BTW, I think everyone, almost everyone on BGP, is aware that Highlands has the enrollment of a 3A school and plays up 5A. If you are conceding that because of this fact they have chosen not play near the rigorous schedule over 4 years that X and T have, then just say that, please. If you are defending the claim "best ever in KY" then just say that and tell me how many of those 54 wins came against X, T, Moeller, Cincy X and Elder. Again, that is a very impressive record and in 09 they earned "Best in State" title....but "best ever in KY", come on, lets bring some facts and perspective to the discussion.

  11. Has any Kentucky team ever had a 4 year won-lost record of 54-1 ? Thats a freshman championship , and 3 varsity state championships , including 3 perfect seasons.

It's right there in the won - lost column , does anybody know of a team with a better record , ever ? If not ,then this team is best ever in Ky. :D

Hoosier, over the last 4 years how many times did this group of Bluebirds that went 54-1 play Louisville X, Louisville Trinity, Cincy X, Cincy Moeller or Cincy Elder? Just curious because this group of 2010 Tigers lost 3 games in 4 years(Moeller as freshmen, Trinity as juniors, and Cincy X as seniors) X and T play at least 2 of these powerhouses every year at every level. HHS had a great year...earned the title of Best in State 2009 by virtue of beating Cincy X....but stop it with the "best ever in Ky" stuff.

  12. No matter the consequences, I would not have expected Nichols to talk negatively about the school, administration or program. Nothing to be gained there! If he had aired any negative feelings it may have been difficult to gain consideration from another school (much less one in Jefferson Co.).

As far as the team that returns for 2010, they will be an experienced and battle tested group of "Juniors and Seniors to be", the program will continue to improve and will be a load for most teams on their schedule next year. Someone (whoever gets the privilege to Coach this fine group) will most definitley look like a genius because this team WILL win games!

Pete, I understand what you're saying...but if the truth is that Nichols got into a conflict with the principal over a kid's playing time and that played a factor in his firing I would think he want that to be public knowledge for prospective Jeff Co. employers. Otherwise, he looks like he just wasn't "getting it done" to the satisfaction of the AD and Principal. The ole "different direction for the program" cliche is nothing more than code for "we don't think this coach is doing a good job."

  13. I think Urban would be a fool to leave UF. Granted, I would love to see him go, but why go? You make a TON of money, you have an unbelievable recruiting base, you have 2 national titles and a great deal of talent to fill the holes left by graduation every year, the weather is MUCH better than South Bend. I just don't see it.

However, it would not shock me to see him take it. I would be surprised, but not shocked.

I felt the same until I spoke to a friend in Jacksonville who knows Urban fairly well. They have not discussed the ND job at all...but my friend thinks Urban loves a challenge and that ND presents itself as such and my friend would not be surprised if he ended up in ND. That being said, I still think it's Kelly.

  14. A couple more articles on the pending lawsuit...

    http://www.sportsbusinessdaily.com/article/135305

    Here is another:

    http://www.kentucky.com/kentuckysports/latest/story/1044559.html

The lawsuit, which was filed Wednesday in Fayette Circuit Court, says UK officials, including UK Athletics Director Mitch Barnhart, have refused to inform Paxton "about the existence or nature of any allegations of misconduct or wrongdoing against him."

"How can you cooperate unless you know what they want?" said Richard G. Johnson, a Cleveland, Ohio attorney who represents Paxton.

The lawsuit says UK compliance director Sandy Bell told Paxton in October that he must submit to an interview with NCAA representative Chance Miller, assistant director of agent, gambling and amateurism activities for the NCAA. According to the lawsuit, Bell told Paxton not to tell anyone — including his parents or his attorney — about the interview or the instruction for him to participate.

The lawsuit says Bell's remarks indicated that Paxton would be suspended from the baseball team for some period even if he submitted to the NCAA interview.

The lawsuit says Barnhart told Paxton's attorney, Peter L. Ostermiller, that Paxton would not be allowed on the baseball team unless he did the interview. Paxton retained Ostermiller after UK and the NCAA requested an interview, according to court documents.

    'James' life in his hands'

According to an affidavit from Ostermiller, Barnhart stopped by Ostermiller's office in Louisville unannounced on Nov. 18, while Ostermiller was in a trial and told a secretary, "The kid (referring to James), won't be able to play."

The deposition says Barnhart told Ostermiller in a phone conversation later that day that Paxton needed to talk to the NCAA investigator as soon as possible.

"Overall, Mr. Barnhart was quite insistent and animated that James had to be interviewed within the week," according to the affidavit.

Barnhart said the NCAA "made its own rules and could do whatever it wanted," the affidavit says.

Barnhart said Miller, the NCAA representative, had initially been "in James' corner," but no longer favored Paxton because the player delayed an interview with Miller on two occasions, according to the affidavit.

The affidavit says Barnhart told Ostermiller that Miller had "James' life in his hands" and was in a position to control his fate as a student athlete.

According to the affidavit, Barnhart said that if the interview was held on Dec. 3 instead of the week of Nov. 23, the UK baseball coach "would not know what to do since workouts with the baseball team were supposed to begin in January." Barnhart said the coach was concerned because if Paxton were ruled ineligible to play, the NCAA would take away any games James played in, according to the deposition.

Ostermiller's deposition also says Barnhart told Ostermiller that the situation with Paxton was "both similar to and not similar to" a lawsuit filed last year on behalf of another college pitcher, Andrew Oliver of Oklahoma State. Oliver filed a lawsuit against the NCAA that accused the association of breach of contract after he was ruled ineligible for using legal advisers to negotiate with the Minnesota Twins when he was drafted out of high school. Oliver received a $750,000 settlement from the NCAA.

I would love to see Paxton and Johnson take the NCAA down. Those clowns think they are above reproach and can do whatever they want. If he did something wrong, don't you have to tell him what he's done? Now we wait to see what the NCAA wants with Paxton.

I agree...its ridiculous for the NCAA to allow kids to test the draft waters but expect them not to consult with an adviser/agent. You have George Steinbrenner and a 20 yr. old kid by himself at the bargaining table...Gee, who wins that negotiation?

  15. So you are saying he ultimately lost his job because he yanked the Prinicpals kid? Wow, I've heard it all now. That's a sad sad situation.

Ditto...Wow. Can the prinicipal be reassigned or does he have tenure such that he would have to be a convicted felon before they can touch him?

  16. There was a rumor about a "heated personal disagreement" between the coach and the Manual principal occuring late this season. I for one hate to see Coach Nichols fired, and am astounded at the unprofessional and petty manner utilized by supposedly professional people in removing him. He had done a lot to upgrade the Manual program.

Manual was a perennial doormat before Nichols arrival. He upgraded the program big time...no doubt.

  17. Did any one see how St. X's Coach walked to the hash line and tipped his hat to the Trinity sideline after the fake field goal attempt??? Did anyone else think that that was a little low class??

I will not believe, even if showed video, that Mike Glaser was trying to send any kind of message to the Trinity sideline by touching, "tipping" his cap. If you've watched Glaser over the years you'd know that he constantly touches and fidgets with his hat.
