  1. I heard Trinity kept some sophmores on the varsity team that may only be able to throw 50 mph. Coach T must be planning for the future games against Cal or do these sophs have dads that are buds with Coach. How much longer must the rock faithful have to wait until Trinity goes out and gets a baseball coach the caliber of their football and basketball programs?

    What-a-fan,

Now you want a baseball coach the same caliber of Szabo?? BTW, these sophmore baseball players that you say might only be only be able to throw 50 mph, did you verify that with a radar gun before you publicly degraded their ability and Coach Tompkins decison to select them?

  2. Playing ball is Cocoa is far from a vacation for the kids. Maybe for the parents but not for the kids.

When I went we played anywhere from 4 to 7 games a day and practiced at night. The weather was HOT. We were on the field every morning by 6:30 warming up for our first game of the day.

I actually ended up going to the hospital on day 3 because I was dehydrated.

The competition is great though and really gives the teams that are fortunate enough to go an upper hand on the local competition.

MBW, surely you mistyped..."4 to 7 games a day". That would be a season worth of games if you played all week at that rate.

  3. The magic may be gone at CAL with the departure of Gray. Eastern has the stud pitching staff. Manual has a very good staff as well with Doering, Pearcy, Klondike and Harness. In a 1 and done scenario Ballard and Trinity are dangerous with Mcombs and Littrell. Male has strong senior and junior position players, maybe thin on the hill. X has quality players at every position, the big question is the emergence of a shutdown pitcher. Should be wide open once again with the draw and the ability to save pitching playing a big role.

  4. "If Daylen does gets cut in baseball he will consentrate on track." I don't see that happening. He's a lock for making jv and starting. If his hitting continues where it ended last year he should earn varsity time in CF when Sweeney pitches. Sorry to jack baseball into a football thread.

  5. (sorry to hijack thread somewhat, but since it's digressed into "who's going where")...

Heard a few of the names on here are considering coming to Ballard. They're good students and their parents realize our AP program takes a backseat to no other school in the city or state (top 5 consistently in number of Nat'l Merit Finalists and highest nationally ranked HS in Jeff. Co. in the TEAMS competition -- tests of Engineering aptitude, math, and science). Add to that the fact that we have a three year ACT prep course tied to our year-round, in-school strength-training course and a coaching staff that will provide "full-service" in promoting them as a football player at the next level and they can see that the benefits of our program extend well beyond the playing field.

The fact that we're taking public school athletes and requiring a "private school" mentality (rigorous off-season program and emphasis on DISCIPLINE and CHARACTER over talent to decide playing time) is appealing as well. We'll make no promises to kids wanting to come here EXCEPT that we'll expect accountability from them on and off the field, that we'll accept only their best efforts on and off the field, and that their coaches will return the favor for THEM when their playing days are done.

Best of luck to the private schools mentioned in this thread -- the things they've been doing for years really do work (that's why I've always copied much of their overall program when I was at my previous schools). Hopefully, in addition to the kids mentioned on here going to the private schools, there will be several families that will opt for a free education at an academically nationally-ranked school who will also do things the best way possible in classroom, the weight room, and on the field.

Coach, the system needs more like you. Keep up the hard work!

  6. Some of these arguments against allowing home schooled children to participate in public school athletics smacks of the old "if it was good enough for me, then it should be good enough for them" argument. If parents want to home school, then how does it harm the children of those parents who believe that the public schools are doing a good enough job for their own children?

The parents of students attending public schools do not own those schools and neither the the school board members, administrative staff, or teachers. Public schools belong to the community and home schooled children are a part of that community, whether you like it or not.

When are these parents going to let their children out of the cocoon and into the real world? If you want your child to play SCHOOL sports then freaking send them to SCHOOL.

  7. I do not recall seeing any of the other outfielders with as strong of an arm as Bowling. He also gets a great jump on the ball. Speed isn't the only measuring stick for an outfielder.

Bowling hit .320 as a sophomore.

Baseball will be here soon!

I have no doubt Bowling could handle center...but typically you put your speediest outfielder in center and the strongest arm in right. Bowling is not slow, does break on the ball very well but I question whether they have a stronger outfield arm than him to put in right. With Littrell throwing as hard as he is now I imagine right field will get plenty of action against better opponents. Ths, will Torry Cannon get a look at an outfield spot?

  8. While I am generally opposed to a multi-class system, I am aware that are a segment of schools who routinely get pounded by traditional baseball powerhouses (ie PRP v. Portland Christian in Region 6 tourney) and I would therefore not be opposed to making the All A Classic the "All A state tournament". However, I think schools should be given the option to play up in class (4 year commitment). I would not favor a 3 or 4 class system because history proves that in the last 20 years non 6A schools win the title as often as 6A schools. The purpose behind a class system is presumably to give schools a level playing field upon which to compete. But, if the playing field is already level why should a smaller school be forced down into the "minors"? The problem also is that you have some larger schools( a few in Jefferson County) who can barely field a team and if you force them to play in the largest class you would still have the problem of 30-0 blowouts in the opening round of region.

  9. I have not heard good things about the sv12. I have never been a fan of the NIKE bat, but this year there is some really good discussion about this bat.

I do believe that the bat does not make near the difference the batter makes. I can strike out with a $500 bat just like I do a $50 bat.

No doubt the bat can't fix your swing or eyes. But, there is often a difference between how far and fast a ball goes that has been struck by a $50 bat or $500 bat. The difference is sometimes as significant as homerun versus a fly out or a seeing eye single versus an infield pop out.

  10. But besides the flex technology, the weight distribution is much different in the Easton bat the the Exogrid.

Very true...same size Easton feels different than size Exogrid. The stiff handle Easton seems to have more durability than the flex Easton. My son has used his for season and a half, hoping to get another one out of it.

  11. But, the fact of the matter is, these smaller schools DO field teams in football, most of them quite easily. So as long as they're able to field a team, why not throw them all into the same football pile as you want to do with baseball? It comes down to the quality of talent from which you have to draw. Smaller schools field their football, baseball, soccer teams, etc, by generally drawing from a lesser talent pool than the big schools - simply due to numbers. That lesser talent pool applies to football, baseball, whatever, and it makes sense to have those schools play against similarly-sized schools drawing from similarly-sized talent pools.

Good, big school football teams play 35 to 40 kids a game assuming the game is close. 11 on offense, 11 on defense, special teams, 2nd team lineman and linebackers, running backs, etc...In high school baseball you can be very good playing the same 9 or 10 kids the whole season. Doesn't work in football. Big, big difference in the two sports.

  12. I'm beginning to wonder if a region title is reasonable now even with Jenkins returning to the lineup. He's been in and out so much, the team chemistry will be in doubt by the time he comes back. With so many top-tier teams in the 7th, Manual will have to really put things together in a hurry to be a legit contender to pull off what will be three big games in a row.

Not saying they can't do it - Manual is exceedingly well-coached and they have the talent. They're just going to be facing a very uphill battle IMO...

On the flip side, with Jenkins out somebody for Manual is getting valuable minutes and experience that could pay dividends come playoff time. I think the key for Manual is getting Jenkins 100% healthy by playoffs. The chemistry should work itself out. Sounds like Manual's big man is improving offensively each game and maybe with Jenkins out he's getting more scoring opportunities and gaining confidence.

  13. Pitchers-- McCombs, Ballard; Dunnaway, Eastern; Doering, Manual; Littrell, Trinity Grayson, X

    2B-Lady, Eastern

    1B-Cornett, Eastern

    3B-- Harness, Manual; Metry, Male

OF--Spalding and Sweeney X; Bowling, Trinity; Pearcy, Manual

    Utility--Messex, Male

  14. I agree to a certain extent. There is such a thing as too much of a good thing. Too many games against really great competition can physically and mentally break you down. I, like you, wish them good luck except for one game (just a different game).

Tough schedules seem to work for Central. The injury risk is present regardless of who you play.

  15. There is nothing going on behind the scenes at all . It was strictly a won/loss situation . Winning the3 district is a given at Holy Cross because of the competition in the district . I think Holy Cross would like to get past the second round every now and then and that just wasn't the case anymore since Weston took over . The Desales' of the world are catching up with them and taking key players from them lately and that is not sitting well with BD/AM alumni . As for Weston the person , the man : You cannot find a better one !!!! As classy as they get !!!! This whole situation is unfortunate but in the end will probably be a good move as far as the football program goes . They know who they want and are goimng after him hard . If not their #1 guy then they have a fine list of other candidates too .

Let's see, in 2008 HC beat every A school on their schedule except Mayfield in RD 2 of playoffs. They also beat 6A South Oldham and 3A Elizabethtown who lost in RD 3 to eventual state champion Central.

The basketball team is 3-10 right now, is Coach Durham next?
