MOREHEAD -- Rowan County came up with the big plays to fend off Fleming County, 33-25, in high school football Friday night .
Rowan County quarterback Dakota Newsome ran for touchdowns of 71 and 1 yards and threw a 13-yard TD pass. The Vikings also scored on a 50-yard interception by Phillip Hodge on the last play of the game.
Trailing by just a point at halftime, Fleming County struck first in the second half on a 1-yard TD run by quarterback Tyler Newsom to go up 19-14 after a 2-point conversion run failed.
Rowan County went back on top with a 10-play, 80-yard drive that was kept alive when Darrell Cross ran 22 yards for a first down. The Vikings' Newsome found freshman Adam Wing, who had gotten behind Fleming's offense for a 13 yard touchdown pass. Rowan County missed on a 2-point conversion pass and took the lead for good at 20-19.
Fleming County gave the ball back to the Vikings when Newsom hit Preston Dugan who fumbled away the ball. Rowan County scored five plays later on a run by Newsome and went up 27-19.
Dugan atoned for his mistake on the ensuing kickoff, going 65 yards to the Rowan County 26, and Caleb Cannon scored on a 6-yard run with 6:30 to go.
A run for a two-point conversion to tie the score failed.
The Fleming County defense stopped Rowan and got the ball back for another try, but Nathan Halliday intercepted a pass for the Vikings.
Still, Fleming managed to get the ball back with 42 seconds to go, but on fourth-and-12, Hodge intercepted at midfield and returned it for the final points.
Rowan had carried a 14-13 lead into halftime.
The Vikings struck first with an 11-play, 27-yard drive, capped by Sean Kelsey's 1-yard run with 21 seconds remaining in the first quarter.
Fleming County answered with a 10-play, 59-yard drive with Josh Gray grabbing a 6-yard touchdown pass from Tyler Newsom with 6:10 to go before halftime. Newsom was 5-for-6 passing for 44 yards on the drive. Nick Mauser's extra-point kick made it 7-7.
Eighteen seconds later, sophomore Newsome electrified the homecoming crowd, faking a handoff, then breaking free for 71 yards and a touchdown.
Fleming County went 47 yards in seven plays to score just before halftime as Cannon capped off the drive with a 2-yard run.
But Rowan County blocked the point-after attempt to cling to a one-point lead.
