  1. The Raceland Baseball team host Fairview today in the "All A Classic". T. Tolliver will be going for the State Stolen Base record today :walk: against Eagle catcher B. Jones who was only the second catcher in 2005 to throw him out. Tolliver this year has 20 sb's in 11 games and is hitting over .600 if my information is up to date. Good Luck Thomas, lets hope that you set the record against the Eagles today. :flame: :thumb:

  2. :thumb: :ylsuper: I agree with that also Woody, some kids are developed further but I still wouldn't take a chance on it - only in rare cases. I coached a coupleof all star teams in the past and Yes, there were kids on that all star team that threw breaking pitches, all but one of them had played for other teams through the regular season and the other one played for me - was developed and could throw it. Even at that that kid threw it more on how he gripped the ball than on turning the arm over/twisting motion. You are right imo in that some of the kids try it from pressure from others like older friends or an older brother. I had a couple of dads suggest it and I just tried to handle it in a way saying something like "your boy has potential to be pretty good and I would rather he not throw or try to throw breaking stuff even though he can". I also agree and posted in my earlier post on this thread that change of speeds, pitch location is MUCH more important at those ages.Doesn't matter what you can throw if you can't get it over the plate:thumb:

  3. :thumb: Little League/Knothole/Babe Ruth/Dads are the reasons behind these problems. They've got kids throwing breaking balls in 'C' ball nowadays, and for those unfamiliar with Knothole baseball, that's 8 years old. It's a shame. I coached a fall ball team last year for 'C' ball, and our rules were no breaking balls and pitchers pitched 2 innings max. I saw dad's (one in particular on my team that got under my skin) off to the side working with their kid on how to throw a breaking ball. 8 YEARS OLD.

:thumb: This is very true, it has been years but I have coached youth baseball in the past at all different ages, I would not let a kid under 12-13 yrs. ols even attempt to throw a breaking pitch, in fact - the years I coached Babe Ruth league, I only had a couple that threw them and they were 15yrs. old. I wonder if that kid that his dad was teaching to throw the pitch can still throw a baseball at all or if his arm is gone, depending on his age now I would say that he might have arm problems when he gets to the h.s. level bc of this at a young age. Their arms are just not developed enough for that kind of stress on them. IMO if a youth league coach, say 8-15 yrs. old just teaches change of speed and location of a pitch that is all they will need.

  4. Pumphrey was a great coach and even better human being. He was a motivator, he had his kids believing in themselves. As I said, Raceland had some great games with Nicholas when he was at the helm. He always tried to get in the other teams heads with his interviews. IMO it would be great if Nicholas Co. would name their field after him. Coaches from the "old school" are few and far between these days. Some of these coaches would have trouble coaching in todays world due to the attitudes of some of the players and parents. The game is the same but the way you have to handle things has changed tremendously. Again, prayers go out to his family.

  5. Sorry to hear that, I can certainly remember that Raceland had some real battles with Pumphrey's teams. He was an excellent coach. Yes Woody, he was a "fertilizer spreader" to say the least. One year before the Raceland game at Raceland he put in the paper (ashland daily) that he didn't even want to get on the bus to come to Raceland, had parents calling his office all week begging him to forfiet the game, that they didn't want their boys hurt. I think that Raceland did win that one but Pumphrey had some very good teams at Nicholas. I remember one kid he had - Mcguffey, a rb that I think went to Notre dame. During that time span, Raceland,Paris and Nicholas were usually at the top of the district if I remember correctly. This is one Old Rambler that says you will be missed, coach Pumphrey:cry:

  6. :thumb: I agree with you, and that is what I tried to say in my post earlier! The reason I believe he said it was because we have alot of people on here that dont want to give Tubby any credit for that title and just say it was with Pitino's players. So if they believe that then cant being using that season when we had 10 losses to blame all on Tubby, because with their reasoning then it much be partly Pitino's fault then!

Like I don't believe that because I believe 98 Championship belongs to Tubby and that year with 10 losses belongs to Tubby because he was the one coaching those teams!

But that is the reason he brought that up I believe since there is so many people that dont give Tubby credit for the 98 season but would blame it all on Tubby for that 10 loss season, and THEY cant have it both ways, because if they believe it was Pitino's championship then it was Pitino's 10 loss season too!

    Well said, FC!!

  7. If he's happy losing 10 games a year and recruiting players to "develop" then he needs to find a new place to work because that is unacceptable at KY. I think Tubby is a great on floor coach, but an awful recruiter. It shouldn't be hard to get the best players to go to the best basketball schools, but he obviously has a problem with it.

I think that the recruiting problem is being addressed by an anticipated shake up in the coaching/recruiting staff.

  8. I think U.K. will have a good season next year. Final Four team - No, better record than last year - Yes. Losing the talent Rondo's, Sparks and Moss will hurt but I think with the incoming freshman class and what we have returning that there will be a MUCH better attitude and will not be "team turmoil" as this past season, that alone should make for a better "team". I can't see any way of predicting a "seed number" in the NCAA right now -we haven't even seen the incoming class and how they will adjust to big time college ball. I do know that they are good and have a lot of promise and potential. See there GT, no U.F. comparisons! (lol)
