  1. I just got word today that Raceland has got approx. 62 kids commited to begin their summer conditioning for football after the school year ends this year :ylsuper: :ylsuper: . That number of kids is great to hear considering that Raceland is a small class "a" school. The coaching staff that is now in place is one big reason why imo. With the additions last year of Coach Parker :thumb: ( he relates to the kids very well and is a "players" coach and his knowledge of the game is unlimited), coach Maynard is a former head coach and is imo a defensive specialist. These coaches along with Coach Francis, Fannin, and Burroughs and Helton are in place and are very valuble additions to Head Coach Randy Vanderhoof. Lets go Rams, with the young talent that you have and this coaching staff in place you should be good for years down the road!

  2. I wanted to add some more thoughts about this latest Mayo thread. As I said in my earlier post in post #5 I belive that he needs to get away from the people that he is now involved with (ALL of them). I think that O.J. might want to seek counseling on the very important decisions that he will soon have to make. IMO O.J. just needs to back off of the circus that has surrounded him and seek new friends of HIS choice and not the "leeches" and just be himself. Overall I belive that O.J. is a basically a good kid that has made some bad decisions and had bad ones made for him and that things will work out in the end for him at least I hope so :thumb: . Another thought would be that he is reportedly close to Lebron James, i think that reports were that James had some problems around this age. If O.J. is close to Lebron then maybe he could mentor him and help steer him in the right direction. The only problem that Lebron James has right now is " The Prince of Kentucky" who is now in Detroit handing his back to him

  3. I don't like that his coach told him what to do...

THe kid is not one... He's 18 years old... Let him answer what he wants to...

The kid is now 18 yrs. old as you say but he is still in high school, I don't know many high school kids that can make adult decisions regardless if they are 18 or not. Mayo imo has also been very misguided for quite a while now. IMO that is his problem. Just a shame to see such a talent as his being used and abused by adults wanting to live off a high school kids name. This reporter did do a lousy job. My question I guess is does O.J. have anyone; parents, mentor or even close friends around him that he can trust. He is at the age now though that he has to realize that his actions are a direct reflection on him and can effect his future either positive or negative. Even in this interview it seemed that he had several people telling him what to say or not to say and was very confused and didn't know what to say.

  4. Why would someone trying to start a college football program from scratch go with a HS coach rather than someone with college experience?

    Woody jr

I agree Woody, I was thinking of posting the same thing ( again, great minds think alike  :D ). I have heard Dameron's name more than any also but here is another thought - and before I say it I have not heard anything other than a couple of questions. Randy Vanderhoof at Raceland has a daughter at KCU and does have some connections there also. Another point to this may be that I have heard talk (and that is just what it is) that Randy was considering getting in to the ministry so KCU may be of possible interest. Randy is a strong Christian as is his whole family. This MAY be a consideration for him to be interested. Randy is a home grown Raceland boy though and his blood runs deep orange and black. I do not know if he would be interested in another position. Like I said, this is just a thought and I am not starting a rumor, just wondering??

  5. I have a good friend that played for Lutz, was an all american, and went to OSU. He was telling me about all of this several months ago when AD-Parker hired the 3 assistant coaches without his input. The post that you quoted is exactly what happened. Since Parker has became AD at Ironton he has run-off an awesome basketball coach in Zorn (former Boyd County coach who took Ironton to the state championship in his first couple of years only to lose to OJ Mayo's NCH team) and now a legend football coach.

I guess thats why he did'nt have any comments as the paper stated. His actions had spoken volumes.

Hmmmmm.... I Wonder what the chances of this AD being on the way out? I mean Lutz was loved over there and it seems to me that this guy would not be very popular right now. :irked:

  6. What a great hire, Bonner will do a great job at L.C., he also brings more than just his knowledge of the Franklin system.

:thumb: A good friend od mine was at the U.K. practice facility the day Bonner left the team. He (friend) was watching his boy at a U.K. football camp for h.s. athletes. He said that it was a bad situation and Bonner handled it with class, which is much more than I can say for the U.K. coach at that time. Bonner went on to set passing records and had a good run in arena football. IMO Dusty was done horribly wrong by Hal Dumme (I mean Mumme) and rose above it.

  7. I wish coach Lutz all the best in his retirement. The man is truly a legend around our area. I have watched his teams play many times through the years and they were always a force - even in their "so called" down seasons. Lutz was "Old School" in his coaching style and I like that. There is not many of them left anymore. Woody.jr. was right in the way that his teams played - they would line up, tell you where the ball was going and teams still could not stop it. Some of my favorite years to watch Ironton when I got the chance were when Herb Conley was the coach at Ashland. A fan of h.s. football got to see the game of football the way it was meant to be played imo. That was a time when the Ashland /Ironton game was always the best game of the season in our area. I wish Ironton the best in trying to find a replacement for him. By the way, this may have absolutely nothing to do with this but our local t.v. news reported this morning that a Marshall Assistant was leaving the program. Marshall's coach Snyder is originally from the Ironton area. I just wonder if there could be a possibility of this man going to Ironton? Probably not but hearing the news of Lutz's retirement a day after hearing about a Marshall assistant leaving was kind of ironic. Oh yeah, The news this morning said that he was leaving to take a job in the Ashland, Ky. area and this is just across the bridge from Ironton. - did not say if it was a coaching related job or anything. Again, best wishes to Coach Lutz.

  8. OK Rambler, here's my chance to ride you a little ;) ;) :p:D

Talk about getting richer, is there any school around that has gotten the number of experienced, top quality people as asst coaches, in multiple sports over the last year or two than those Rams of yours ??

I wish we had several of those guys. We could start with that big tall guy in your dugout :D

I'm not sure if many people realize the guys that have come on board for Raceland lately.

    Cheers, Woody Jr

You are absolutely right about the new hires that have came in to my Raceland lately Woody:thumb: . I am very pleased with these guys (and ladies). We at "Ram Land" imo have been blessed in the addition of Gerad Parker (former Lawrence Co. and U.K. player) in football, I am happier with him than any of them:banana:  , I just really hope that we can keep him down here. Parkers wife Kandi, former West Carter h.s. and Ky. POY plus Morehead State player. Parker is the former K. Brown, daughter of the beloved and missed "Hop" Brown (former coach at West) and has also been a valuble addition in girls b.b.:jump: T.J. Maynard in football has also been a valuble addition to the football staff (Former U.K. football player and Greenup Co. head coach). Jason Clark (boys basketball asst.) spent time at Arkansas coaching under Nolan Richardson. Drew Hall, last but not least and your "big tall guy" from Ashland in baseball has really made a difference imo in the Rams pitching staff. I don't mind you calling me out on this one at all  I hope that Raceland can keep these people, if so the Rams athletic programs will be in very good hands in the future. All of these along with Bob Trimble in girls b.b. would make very good head coaches imo.

  9. If you have someone that is a baseball person keeping the book, I think you'd find that most scorekeepers are somewhat ligit. An error is an error. I know I have had other parents get upset with me because I didn't give a player "the benefit of a doubt"

Bottom line, would the player have been out if not for the bobble or did the baserunner advance because of the miscue. The other thing is there are so many mental errors that don't count as a physical error but make a difference.

:thumb: I was including mental error's in my mention of poor defense, error's. Things like not hitting a cut off man, throwing behind a runner, etc.

  10. That is very true. I know two years ago, Russell gave up over 100 unarned runs over the season. Hard to win many games, when you are spotting teams 3 or 4 runs a game.

How many unearned runs has Raceland given up this year?

I have no idea how many this year, I just know that I have seen a lot of Raceland teams (and others) through the years flat out give ball games away with poor defense.
