I've known Matt sice he was a boy. He played BBall with my younger brother in AAU and enjoyed much success and you're exactly right. He's an incredible athlete but he's an even better person.

Coaches are giving a chance at the beginning of the year to "scratch" certain officials but they're not giving a chance to list the officials they "allow" to officiate their games. Usually the "scratch list" is like 1 or 2 official or in football it's I think 10% or 20% of the crews, I can't quite remember.

I don't think evaluating by fellow officials would work at all. It's too much of a conflict of interest.

The 10th and 11th region has themselves an excellant official. Any region would be lucky to have an official of his caliber.

You've brought up some great points! Some really great points. I'll say this though, I think Elliott is now a much better team than what they were last year. Russell did give them fits last year with a healthy Vanhoose and more than likely would have lost to them for the 3rd time in the regionals had Jonathan not gotten injured. But, they are a better team this year though with another year to under their belt and they will only get better next year.

Are you saying the 60-61' team is the best ever in the state or in the region? I'm talking about Elliott being the best 16th region team ever, not the best team in state history.

Struggling against a good East Carter team means nothing. The fact that they did struggle but still pulled out the win is even more impressive to me. Great teams find ways to win and even the greatest teams have close games. I'm thinking more about this team next year. They are a great team right now but they can be a very speacial team next year if they can conyinue to get better and stay healthy.

I thought that some of the old Ashland team may have had a claim on the best 16th region team. They had a few really great teams back then.

Is Elliott County the best 16th region team ever? I'm not saying they are this year but what about next year if they continue to improve like they have from year to year. I'm just looking for opinions on this. Maybe the older prepsters can compare them to teams in the 50's, 60's, and 70's. They are very impressive this year but just think about next year, WOW! If they continue to improve the sky is the limit for this team. What are your thoughts? Should they be considered one of the best ever?

For your info GAL, I'm not someone rating officials from the stands. Ask an official who knows officiating before you start ranting. Coaching does not make you an expert on officiating. I'll tell you this though, you did not see Kenny Clark call a "T" on anyone at Russell 2 yrs ago because he hasn't called a JV game at Russell is probably 6 or 7 years and maybe longer than that. You may be getting him mixed up with someone else but I think if I was going to call someone out like you just did, I would at least make sure that I had the right person. About your rated higher rant, usually only 1 official makes in to the boys State Tourney each year from the NEKBOA. I guess with your theory, the other officials are horrible for not getting the call for the Sweet 16. :rolleyes::rolleyes:

You've misunderstood what I was saying. Of course I think you have to HAVE a good personality to succeed in coaching but you don't have to BE a personality to succeed. Does that make any sense? Tubby may have a great personality but he's not known as a personality like a John Gruden, John Calipari, or a Bobby Knight are known. I too think that a kids respond better to a "Player's Coach" than they will for someone who constantly screams and yells. I agree with what you posted (except for the part about UK and BCG), I think we were just thinking of 2 different things. It's unfair to compare Tubby's UK tenure and BCG's 15 games. Give the man some time.

Wins and loses may not be a reason to fire a coach but it does have any effect on his/her career and their livelyhood in terms of future jobs. A coaches record obviously means more at each higher level but I think wins and loses are meaning more and more in today's high school game. Maybe not to the point of firing a coach, although I think some schools would, but it's bringing more and more pressure in places with winning traditions. It's unfortunate but I think that's the direction we're heading in. You may not agree Cubster, you would know more than I would about coaching in today's game and the pressures and expectations involved.

I don't think that your personality has much to do with whether you can coach or not. There are tons of great coaches with little or no personality in every level. Not saying that Dodd doesn't have personality because I know him and I know he does but I'm just making a point. Personality is a plus but I don't think a neccessity.

Wow! So let's say for instance that you had a very talented freshman or sophomore that was going to be the cornerstone for your program for years to come and he was ready to play at this point, you would start a less talented and less skilled player based solely on age and class? I'm not trying to be argumentative, I'm just trying to figure this out because it boggles me. Nowadays players are bigger, stronger, faster, more skilled, and more talented at a younger age.

Do you feel that way even if the younger player has more talent and is a better player? Nowadays a coach's livelyhood comes down to wins and loses. I think when players get to the varsity level the playing time should be earned in various ways but I think it mostly boils down to talent. Who are the 5 best players that I can put on the floor that gives my team the best chance to win regardless of class or anything else. It's also good for the future of the program if you have young talent. JMO!

I just want to laugh when I read this. Those are 4 very good officials listed there. You know that you can always log onto the KHSAA website and register to officiate. I tell everyone this who criticizes the officials....If you don't like them, if you think you can do better, or you think they need to improve somehow then come on out! I'm sure the local associations would love to have a new official and then you can criticize if you want, I don't think you would anymore but you could if you wanted. Instead of sitting in the stands bashing the officials about 1 missed call, come out and do something about it. This thread was meant to give some officials a bit of credit, not to bash them and call them horrible. Oh BTW, the first 2 officials listed (Kenny Clark and Tom Sparks) are 2 of the best officials in the 16th region, along with Steve Greenhill. The 3rd offical listed (Dave Anderson) is on his way to big things if he chooses. He's a great young official with a bright future in officiating. That comes from people who know just a bit more about officiating then you.

Are you speaking of the same Cary Lyle who officiates football in the 16th Region? Works for the state at Greenbo Lake? If so, I wonder why he calls out of another area in basketball. If we're speaking of the same Cary Lyle then your compliments suit him well. He's an excellant football official who officiated the State Finals last year and while I haven't seen him call basketball, I can only assume that he's at the top level of that as well. Not only is he an excellant official but he's also a great association member who cares deeply for the future of officiating in this state. He's a tremendous asset and mentor to our football association. I have a ton of respect for the man.

I agree Rambler. After Elloitt, it's pretty even in the 16th. Anyone can beat anyone on any given night. I don't think Elliott will even be tested in the 16th this year though. Everyone is just playing for 2nd place for the next couple years.
