  1. I don't take your comments as 'slighting' the kid...I have seen several kids who I've heard are big recruits, go 0 for 4 with 2 errors. He might fly out 3 times and K once....the fan sees a terrible hitter...the scout sees a kid get fooled on a strike out and come back unphased, make an adjustment, and hit a fly ball on the same pitch that hangs in the air for 5 seconds. Heck, I've seen Farris and Maile make horrible throws into the outfield...I might say, "that's not very impressive"...a scout might say, "nice reaction, good feet, 70 arm, etc...You walk away wondering what all the hype's about? Scouts don't care too much about the micro statistics....they look at the bigger picture... make up, projection (physical and mental), athleticism, arm strength, bat speed, body, smarts, ability to make pitch by pitch adjustments, is he a college kid, and most of all...signability (ie how little money can we get this kid for)...etc etc...
  2. Don't know the young man either. All the scouting site said was "good body and tools, stood out at Kernels". I'm guessing Kernels refers to the Cedar Rapid Kernels which as the 'A' affilliate of the Angels; my guess is he attended a showcase or tryout event there and did well? The thing about these scouting resources is that there are several, they are really fun to read (for lonely baseball junkies), but in the end, that's about it. Many of them make money by hosting events, showcases, tournaments etc...in addition to selling their reports/membership to the public as well as coaches and scouts. The only report that matters is the one prepared by the school / scout looking at these kids over a long period of time. Either way, it sounds like Jarred is catching the eyes of some who pay attention, so I'm sure we'll be hearing more about him this spring! Congrats and good luck to all the boys!! By the way, the national rank is for class of 09 seniors only...does not include underclassmen, juco, or college kids...
  3. According to Perfect Game Crosschecker, which is one of many scouting bureaus...these are the top 10 in order (along with their national ranking): 227 Jarred Clarkson OF Shelby Co 229 Luke Maile C Cov Cath 345 Shane Crain IF Lex Christian 779 Tyler Dunaway RHP Eastern 793 Cody Gibson RHP PRP 808 Logan Jackson C Tates Crk 855 Caleb Hanes RHP Bowling Green 902 Brandon Boling RHP Bryan Station 981 Zack McCarthy OF Bullit East 1141 Austin Johnson 1B Lex Christian
  4. The Colonels are VERY concerned with their record. Walt needs more trophies for his bookshelf. I think it's his top priority, Walt makes it clear that he is focused on winning games because after 14 years in the bigs, he's very concerned with our opinion of him; as opposed to developing and getting kids into college baseball. The fact that every kid who wanted to play college baseball has received that opportunity under his watch is a low priority and an accident. Btw... I think they are more like 5 and 45....they're terrible! Don't put your kid under a guy with his resume who can make one phone call and have 20 scouts at your kid's practice....I'm sure he'd rather win a trophy. The reason they supposedly stopped posting stats is probably because they're so pathetic they don't even keep 'em very well! Ask the kids who play for him, they will tell you...it's just terrible! :thumb:
  5. Any input regarding 15U / 14U in NKY?
  6. The way I understand it...you have to get invited by the host team (or a summer coach or h.s. coach can maybe get you invited?) to try out; there are tryouts held throughout the country, each area sponsored by a different ML team, which rotates year to year. It appears that reps from various teams work together to run the tryouts / showcases and to coach the team; but one team is the named sponsor that year. They are organized by groups of area codes. This one was apparently Ky, In, Oh, maybe Mich, and Ill..not sure on that. Anyway, from that tryout, they take 18 to 25 kids to the Area Code Games in Long Beach. I think there will be a total of 8 teams there that cover the country? or part(s) of the country? They will participate in workouts, showcase, then play a College W.S. format tournament....The East Coast Showcase is similar I think; but I'm not sure how they compliment or compete with each other? This area's host teams are the Yankees for the East Coast and the White Sox for the Area Code / West Coast thing... ...That's the story I got...
  7. fwiw, talked to Luke. It was a little aggressive, but not dirty. Kid was trying to break up a 1-2-3 double play with bases loaded and slid to the front of the plate to clip him. Anyway, he's 100% fine.
  8. Old Guy, I gotta give you credit for your passion and effort! You are amazing! You're better than a sports center update! It is truly refreshing to read your love of the game; and for these kids in these posts!!!:thumb:
  9. Watch out for those Tigers! UNC is awefully good; but LSU is playing with a lot of confidence and no fear. It should be a great tournament! I'm thinking LSU v Miami for the final...Tigers get #6 (I think?)
  10. [quote name= Add in that his alma mater needs a new head coach....[/quote] What school did he attend?
  11. These discussions are neither here nor there...but...how are so sure? "NEVER"? ...do you "Always" have a gun on him? I haven't noticed you behind the plate...? He was gunned at 83 as a soph trying out for the Ky Colonels...
  12. I've been told they will play HC / BW Tues as scheduled; and CCH/Holmes on Wednesday...Finals Thursday
  13. Good call...btw, the game was already played...seems the topic is mute anyway...
  14. I think this is on original topic?...fwiw: CCH at Scott; bottoom of 6th; Scott runners on 2nd and 3rd; runner at 3rd is the tying run with 1 out. Nine hitter up...(poor kid having a tough night at the plate; so you expect a squeeze). Pitch sequence: strike one low; pitch out (rh batter) - no squeeze on; then, pitch "out" well behind the batter...squeeze is on...batter freezes - runner hung out to dry! Then strikes 2 and 3 to end the inning. Mission accomplished without throwing "at" batter.. I've never seen a pitch "out" - in before...
  15. That is 100% accurate...in addition...when did it become such a terrible thing to throw at a batter? When I was a kid (I'm 42) that's exactly what we were taught. (I had two very well respected, classy coaches btw...both played D1 and the other played to AA pro). The point is, I was thrown at...I threw at batters, I don't remember anything bad happening? Everybody knew that was the game. If I had a big day going...maybe a hr, or just ripping a couple, I knew chances were good that I was going to see my chin shaved. "Head hunting" for the sake of simply hurting somebody was never taught or tolerated in my experience. However, getting a batter off the plate, keeping the batters from becoming too comfortable with the occassional loss of control, and making it tough on a squeeze bunter were all accepted "good baseball". "up and in"..."under the chin"..."back him off"..."own the inside"..."set up the outside corner"...all of these were accomplished by some inside heat. When did it become unacceptable? Was there an epidemic of severe injury I missed along the way?
  16. Hamilton Badin...in Ohio...part of the GCL..I think?
  17. The only opinions that matter on a subject such as this one, imo, are those of his players, past and current. None of you are they. The rest of us are either grinding an axe, or drinking the cool-aid...Let's hear from some of the players from the past 5 seasons! ...With that said, I don't really care either way anymore what happens...but, I must say that some of that letter is just goofy. The part about the money is the dumbest point any coach could make. Every person in education could theoretically make similar statements and come up with hypothetic amounts of cash they and their families 'sacrificed'...in addition, wasn't he fired from Harrision County, then went to take the jv baseball job at Ludlow before coming to the jv basketball job at CovCath...Ludlow must pay their coaches a fortune! The pro Listerman posts on here have truly gotten predictable and comical...doesn't matter the title of the thread...everytime there's an opportunity..one of you guys throws in that this coach is God's gift to CCH....it appears that "you protest too much" imo... This coach seems to need that assurance, or at least the supporters on here, appear to need to keep saying it to each other more than any other coach by a LONG shot. Now we have a thread exclusively for it. Though you may need to change the title because as I read this letter, it simply confirms Listerman's position, which is not a news flash...
  18. I don't want to argue about the thing at all, they're both awesome...just saying that if one look's primarily at stats....Corey's numbers are just amazing...
  19. Ken Shields '60 and Dick Maile '61 ... I don't think they ever won as Covington Grant pretty much dominated for those years..I think..
  20. He actually got his first varsity start in the Regional Semi's vs Dixie...got the win and pitched well...he did not have all his full velocity, but pitched smart and changed speeds quite well...he is a gutsy kid who, if healthy, should have a very nice year.
  21. Just received an email indicating that the game will be on 107.5 tonight with Randy Wilson and Kevin Rengering....
