  1. Did anyone see Bozich's article in the Courier today on this very subject? I don't usually agree with him but he make's some very valid points in this article. Just thought everyone might be interested in reading it! http://www.courier-journal.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=2005509150451
  2. You are talking out of both sides of your mouth! You need to decide what you are trying to defend, A good education for the students in your district or a fair and equitable sports program. Minority Versus Majority. I DON'T mean racially. The kids in your or any sports program are the minority, the kids in the school who all have a right to a good education are the Majority. Do the math. 50 to 100 kids on the football team versus 3500 total kids in the school. That's less than 2% of the student population. The extracurricular activities should prepare them for life in the real world. You must think that everything is FAIR in the real world. Let me be the first to give you the heads up: LIFE ISN'T FAIR!
  3. ^ You obviously have know idea how the Catholic HS's handle their enrollments. They do NOT turn away kids. They have a 5 level educational system that allows the kids coming in to the program to be placed at their level of competency. The test that they take during their 8th grade year is a PLACEMENT TEST; not an enterance exam. (By the way this test is open to any 8th grader who wants to take the test.) The test is to see what level the student should be placed in for their best chance of successfully completing their education at their school of choice. ^ I don't think Coach Redman @ Male or Coach Nichols @ Manual would appreciate you saying they get waxed by the private schools. I beleive Trinity won against Manual just 2 weeks ago in the last few minutes of the game. They were down and came back to win by 4 points. I know last year St. X squeeeeeecked out a win 14 or 15 to 9 against Male and it took a goal line stand by St. X late in the game to stop Male from scoring. Unless of course you consider those a waxing. But then you probably do consider that a waxing based on some of the other posts of yours I've read on this subject.
  4. At last the perfect answer. The HAVE's compete for their title and the HAVE-NOT'S compete for theirs. This is what they're all cryin about anyway. You go Scribe Baby! Why didn't I think of this! :ylsuper:
  5. Do you like the idea of a shallow victory? Well that's what you'll get if you isolate the Private High Schools from the Public High Schools. Just for arguments sake let's say the KHSAA sets the Private Schools loose in their own conference/division to do what they will. Then HHS goes on and wins their State title each and every year for the next 10 years. In the mean time CCH is out there playing Lexington Catholic and Christian Academy of Louisville (CAL) and a whole host of other private schools across the state and from Indiana, Ohio and Tennessee. CCH can still say yea you won a state title but you never played us! As can St. X, or Trinity, or Lexington Catholic, CAL, or any other private school in the state. You play the game to see who is the better team; NOT to fit some pie in the sky idea of what's fair and not fair. You can "what if" this thing all you want, but if you don't play the game how do you know who will or won't win! Remember folks this GAME is for the kids. And it is just a game. Let's face facts, the majority of these kids will not play ball beyond high school. The percentages are not in their favor. This game is NOT for us adults to get our jollies by living vicariously thru our kids. I for one, who is a dad with a kid who plays high school sports, and coached baseball for 8 years, have asked the question of kids in other programs. And the response has come back resoundingly, "Yes, we want our shot at beating them." That tells me the kids like the idea of playing the private schools. Because when they do beat the Private schools, the victory is all the more SWEET. I say we leave it up to them, they're the ones playing the game; not us. :dancingpa
  6. Rambo, this is the same point I made earlier when I said the kids are what matters. This whole discussion stemmed from sports. Let's face it the majority of these kids will NOT play sports beyond High School. So what is the difference if one plays for a private or a public school? One more point on the private school tuition assistance. It is just that: ASSISTANCE It's not a free ride. Those families STILL have to pay something to attend the school. The public school would be FREE. In almost all cases the student is required to do Work Study to help pay the difference. It's other 2 of the 3 "T's". (Time, Talent and Treasure.)
  7. Before you make that assumption you probably should ask one or two of those students. I know of several Private High School students who did NOT attend Private Elementary Schools. Most did it to save the money for the private High School in order to get their kids ready for college.
  8. The "Private Schools" do NOT get support of any kind from the government. NONE. NODDA. ZIP. ZILCH. So where do you public school guys think the money to run the private schools comes from? It comes from the tuition the student pays to attend that school. Most of which is paid by parents just like you and me who simply want the best for their kids. The average school teacher in a private school accepts 20% to 30% less for their annual salary than that of their Public School counterpart. They don’t have a pension plan and some don’t have health benefits. They rely on their spouses for benefits. This isn’t a complaint. It’s merely a statement about a conscience decision they each make because of their beliefs in the private system in which they choose to teach. Would you accept the exact same job you are doing today for less money because of your beliefs? You folks call it recruiting. I’m sorry for your interpretation; but it’s Marketing. It has to be done in order to survive. We don’t have the cushey coffers of the State Government to fall back on when ever a program needs to be added; or a building needs to be built. We can’t go pass a State Bill in the House and/or Senate to raise taxes to give teachers better salaries; or better pensions; or health insurance. The money has to be raised to support the school and it's programs. That just happens to include sports. I for one am very glad it does. The sad thing about this whole thread/debate is that this is the adults arguing about sports. What is the main purpose of any school? THE EDUCATION OF OUR KIDS INSIDE. If this kind of time and effort was spent on improving the public school systems, think about what we could get done as a nation? So go ahead; put the Private Schools down for being able to do both, by creating a positive educational environment and an outstanding sports program and all for far less dollars than the Public Schools. We’ve got big shoulders we can carry the load. We’ve been doing it for years and we'll continue to do it for years to come. Just try to stop us. :thumb:
  9. If anyone can argue this point from both perspectives it's the old Birdiecat. I have 1 child in both a public school and in a private. Everytime I go to a St. X or Trinity away game it's funny how I always seem to see the public schools they are playing, charging admission. Both of these programs bring with them a contingent of people, alums, parents, grandparents, great-grandparents, brothers and sisters, unlike any other athletic program in the state. The only programs that come close are Male, Manual, Lex. Cath., and Bowling Green. It doesn't matter if they are playing in town or in Bowling Green. I don't know many that travel as well as St. X and Trinity. We help feed the Public School coffers at the gate and at their concession stands. Most of these programs are in desparate need of every dollar they can put their hands on. How will they replace those dollars. To put it in perspective, 3 years ago I arrived at an Atherton Versus St. X game at Atherton. It was in the 4th quarter and the score was ........ well let's just say it was in a continuous clock mode. They still charged me admission to get in to see a friends son play in this game. I think the best idea I have heard come out of this thread is to take the state power house teams (public or private) and put them in their own division. Call it 5A. Then allow any program that wants to contend for the 5A title step up to the plate and play a regular 10 game season with a playoff at the end of the season. :walk:
  10. :fire: :madman: In a great document we are all very familiar with, or at least we all should be, it states, No taxation without representation. One vote one voice and No double taxes. We parents who CHOOSE to send our kids to private schools in essence are double taxed. We pay public school taxes via our property taxes and elsewhere just like everyone else. Do we get a break on our taxes for sending our kids to a private school. Do you here us complaining about not getting this break. No! We make a conscience choice everytime we write a check to St. X, KCD, CAL, Assumption, Trinity, etc. We accept the circumstances for what they are and we CHOOSE to do something about it! It's lazy and it's easier to just sit back and whine and complain about your situation, than it is to get up off your lazy dead duff and change your position. Our society has produced a bunch of complacent individuals who can't do much for themselves. They have no work ethic. That's why most jobs in this country are being taken over by foreign labor. They believe in working for what they get. Not having it handed to them because it's fair. Here is a thought for you, what do you think would happen if every single private school in the state of Kentucky, from kindergarten through 12th grade, closed their doors the same day. The government officials wouldn't know what to do. There wouldn't be enough school buses, school buildings, teachers, books, paper, pencils, free lunches, free breakfast, etc. It would be total pandemonium. Everyone's taxes would go up. Yes even mine. :fire: :madman:
