Have you heard any names?  I have also heard the name Matt Chandler.

    For clarification:

    • McKee is the son of Scott County coach Jim McKee, was an assistant at EKU and now an assistant to his dad at Scott Counmty.
    • Mills is an assistant at Boyle County.
    • Chandler is an assistant at Franklin County and was at Danville before that, I believe. He also spent a couple seasons as head coach at Jenkins in eastern Kentucky.

All are highly regarded and would seem to be excellent choices for Hazard.

  2. I don't know what the Mountain Sports Hall of Fame's intentions are with the gym but I would love to see it used in a way similar to the Hoosiers gym in Knightstown, Indiana. If you don't know, teams pay a fee to play games there and the money is used to continue to keep the gym open for tours, a museum, and gift shop. Several Kentucky teams have played there in recent years.

7-5 is probably best case scenario.

I'd say 8-4 is best case scenario, but that would require two road wins against the Ole Miss, Florida, Tennessee, Texas group. Two seems reasonable but history hasn't shown UK capable of winning two roads games against quality conference opponents in a season too often.

I agree. I think "big fish" is going to mean an established coach with a winning record, tournament experience and the ability to recruit top talent, and/or utilize NIL.

I would expect Louisville to be able to hire somebody that every college basketball fan would know based on name alone.

First name that comes to mind for me is Shaka Smart. I know the Texas tenure wasn't great but he's done well everywhere else. He might be interested in staying at Marquette but I'm sure the resources at Louisville are better.

Part of the problem with a "big fish" or "established coach" is there aren't a ton of those in college basketball right now. You can see by the recent hires at Carolina, Duke, Villanova, and Syracuse that the options weren't overflowing as they have been at other times in history.

  5. If you're curious, here are the appearances, records, and number of championships for each Jefferson County team:

    • Atherton - 36 appearances, 13-36 overall record, 0 titles
    • Ballard - 48, 101-40, 8 titles
    • Beth Haven - 4, 1-4, 0 titles
    • Brown - no appearances
    • Butler - 34, 26-33, 1 title
    • Central - 48, 69-42, 6 titles
    • CAL - 9, 3-9, 0 titles
    • DeSales - 45, 20-44, 1 title
    • Doss - 33, 24-33, 0 titles
    • Eastern - 37, 46-33, 4 titles
    • Evangel - no appearances
    • Fairdale - 34, 31-31, 3 titles
    • Fern Creek - 27, 29-26, 1 title

    • Jeffersontown - 25, 22-25, 0 titles
    • Kentucky Country Day - 5, 3-5, 0 titles

Mahomes showed his rear and cried like a baby after the refs did their jobs. Dude is a tool.

I know the superimposed line on television is unofficial but it was clear that the wide receiver was line up over the line. However, it also seems clear on a lot of other plays (offense and defense) and offsides isn't called. He'll recognize he was wrong when he watches film but that call isn't made consistently.

They bit off more than they could chew with 24 teams. 16 was plenty.

Any NCAA tournament has to have at least half of the participants be at-large. I think the expansion to 24 teams was due to the number of conferences sending automatic bid teams to the FBS tournament. But you are right, 16 was the magic number.

I watched a little bit of a couple of games too.  I love the format, but the level of play is a couple of steps down from big time college football.

    From Outkick on Facebook.

Montana and Delaware played a game this past weekend in heavy snow, and the pictures and videos are downright majestic.

I can't help but think that an NCAA quarterfinal game with teams like Ole Miss at Michigan in weather like this would be an awesome experience. Alas, the conferences have steadfastly remained beholden to the bowl system. With the new format next year, I do hope it is changing more toward the FBS model.

I am not the expert there TWT but I do think there needs to a major change with out of state games.

And I hate to keep beating this drum, but Kentucky High School Football would be better served by using Calpreps or even the TP94 Power Ratings vs. RPI.

Agreed with both of these points. With as much information as there is on high school sports there is no reason for the out-of-state issue to be so complex. You shouldn't be punished for playing good teams from other states, nor should border schools be punished for playing teams that are much closer in proximity to them than teams actually in Kentucky.

No shame in that Middlesboro loss in 1998, the Jackets had an excellent football team, one of the best ever 1A teams. I went back and looked at the final score:

Middlesboro 27 Mayfield 6 (at Ky. Fair & Expo. Center's Cardinal Stadium)

That game by Middlesboro was one of the best all-around performances I've ever seen in a state championship game. They were excellent.

Prior to 1975 there were only 3 classes in KY. 3A was all just Louisville schools. 1A was all the very small schools. And 2A, which Mayfield was in, was everyone else in the state. Meaning that Mayfield was having to compete against many teams over twice their size in order to win a state championship. They were competing against the likes of Highlands, Hopkinsville, Paducah Tilghman, Madisonville, Owensboro, Tates Creek, Bryan Station, Lafayette and many other big schools to win a state championship. Not saying it couldn’t have been done but it just never happened. Once they went to 4 classes in 1975 it evened things out a bit and that’s when you start to see Mayfield’s playoff success. Since 1976 they have been to 26 state title games in 48 years.

To further this point, below is the district champion from Mayfield's district each year from 1959-1975 (when only district champions made the playoffs), their playoff result that year, and Mayfield's district finish:

    • 1959 - Henderson (AA state champions); Mayfield tied for 9th in district
    • 1960 - Paducah Tilghman (AA state semifinals); Mayfield 2nd in district
    • 1961 - Paducah Tilghman (AA state semifinals); Mayfield 3rd in district
    • 1962 - Paducah Tilghman (AA state quarterfinals); Mayfield last in district
    • 1963 - Caldwell County (AA state champions); Mayfield 5th in district
    • 1964 - Hopkinsville (AA state quarterfinals); Mayfield 3rd in district
    • 1965 - Hopkinsville (AA state champions); Mayfield 2nd in district
    • 1966 - Hopkinsville (AA state champions); Mayfield 3rd in district
    • 1967 - MAYFIELD (AA STATE SEMIFINALS)
    • 1968 - Paducah Tilghman (AA state semifinals); Mayfield 2nd in district
    • 1969 - MAYFIELD (AA STATE SEMFINALS)
    • 1970 - MAYFIELD (AA STATE QUARTERFINALS)
    • 1971 - Hopkinsville (AA state quarterfinals); Mayfield 2nd in district
    • 1972 - Hopkinsville (AA state quarterfinals); Mayfield 4th in district
    • 1973 - Paducah Tilghman (AA state champions); Mayfield 7th in district
    • 1974 - MAYFIELD (AA STATE QUARTERFINALS)

During the 15 year stretch of there being only two classes outside of Louisville, Mayfield made the playoff four times and a district opponent won the state championship five times. It was just really, really, really hard to make the playoffs back when and Mayfield was doing it as a small school playing up.

So, I guess no one can share some insight as to why OC left #9 off their roster when he clearly starts for offense and defense?

He tore his jersey last week and changed numbers mid game. Maybe that’s the reason but not sure.

It's obviously some ploy to hide the fact that he's playing. Dirty cheaters.

Is he gone from the team?  Is this a mistake?  Is this an old roster they will certainly change before the game?

In their game with Somerset last week he tore his jersey. Prior to the start of the second half the PA announcer told over the speakers that #9 would be wearing #80 for the remainder of the game. It wasn't done in secret.

A little surprised in this result for game 1, especially being at Somerset. Seems like Mercer is getting it together sooner than I expected. Did Somerset have their football players?

I heard they had them but their first practice as a full team was just this past Saturday. So essentially two days to prepare. Mercer is good and this was a good win, but I wouldn't read a ton into it for Somerset. I'm sure the Jumpers will be fine once the football players get their basketball legs.

Will be a tough one to fill.  Petit is tenured as a teacher and the only one in the district qualified to teach Physics...doubt there's a lot of coaches that fit that bill.  This program needs someone young and energetic to bring some life to it.

Does the new coach have to teach physics? I would imagine Pendleton is like many other schools districts in Kentucky: they always have open jobs at the end of the year. And if you find a guy you really want, you can always make it work.
