  1. Apollo was on a 3-year winning streak in this annual battle until last year when Catholic picked up a 42-14 victory. Apollo returns RB/DB Niles Board, WR/DB Eli Masterson, and DB Jamison Brown. Catholic returns QB/LB Brady Atwell, WR/DB Tutt Carrico, and RB/LB Vince Carrico. Those are the bullet points from the Owensboro Times article. I'm just ready to be back on the sidelines.
  2. Part two of that solution is for people to get control of their kids.
  3. Nobody can beat having a beer logo in the middle of the gym floor.
  4. Two days from now, Thursday, April 27, 2023, the baseball field at Apollo High School will officially be christened Bob Mantooth Field at Eagle Park. Coach Mantooth began his career at Webster County High School, but spent the vast majority at the helm of the Eagles (30+years, I believe). Per KHSAA records, he won 977 games over 42 seasons. 5. His wife is from Owensboro and just took a Guidance Counselor position in town. To my knowledge, there are no head coaching positions nearby. The move may have been for family dynamics only at this point.
  6. Coach Natalie Powers-Payne has resigned her position. Payne took the team to the Sweet 16 in 2021. Returning for next years team are two 6-foot seniors Jenna Dant and Jennifer Lee along with freshman star Kennedy Lane.
  7. That’s a great photo. Worst call I ever saw at KHSAA sweet 16 was 2003 against Daviess County HS. Horn went off, kid from the other team took two steps, dribbled, traveled, waved at his mom in the crowd, sneezed, bobbled, recovered, threw the ball through the rim, official counted it for the game winner, and disappeared like Harry Houdini. This was back when Rupp Arena was near capacity for most sessions. Everyone was booing. Even the crowd from the other team.
  8. I remember the lines outside Graves County High School in '93, '94, '97, and '98 when Alan Hatcher was on an absolute tear through the 1st region. Those were fun times.
  9. They use it for convenience my friend. We are lazy society living in an amazon world. What's $5 more when you can just double click?
  10. In the past, they’ve split the two end zone student sections in half. So, four teams per session, each school was given half of an end zone for students/fans. Is that no longer the case?
  11. A lot of these issues could be resolved by applying the same guidelines to all member schools: public or private. The priority should be an education. So, a parent genuinely moving their child to a private school to receive a "better education," should be perfectly fine with that child sitting out of athletics for a year.
  12. That was my mistake. I was following the guidance of one of my predecessors who had many years of experience. I assumed they knew, as opposed to verifying for myself. edited to add: Our administration is the most cheer-friendly administration I've worked with in my quarter-century of doing this.
  13. I will back up on half of it. I know the part of them having to pay for half of the bus is true. The coach in question and I have discussed that. I am unsure if they "have" to travel, or if they just do so as a matter of tradition and it's "expected." She is only in her 2nd or 3rd year at that school. It took me about 4 years in my current position to really get a grasp on what we "had" to do versus what I was being "told we had" to do. Sometimes people think things have to remain the same just so they can remain the same.
  14. To your point about school cheerleading is for supporting other sports. That's the approach we take at Apollo. Somewhere in my pre-season parent meeting every season we discuss our "Mission" which is basically 3 parts: "Priority 1A - Serve to represent our school as a support group for our football and basketball programs. Priority 1B - Serve to represent our school in interscholastic competitions at the local, regional, and national level. Priority 2 - Serve to represent our school in public appearances as requested." In the case of a game in which we would normally be in attendance, but have a need to be absent for competitive purposes, I will generally personally send an email to the athletic director and head coach of that team with an explanation. When I was in high school doing this 25 years ago, we did all football games, all basketball games (home and away), and the national competition. My goal is to allow my athletes to have the most/best possible experiences while also allowing them the opportunity to focus on their list of priorities 1) God/Family, 2) Academics 3) Cheerleading/Other Varsity athletics (I support multi-sport athletes in whatever way I possibly can).
  15. Some quick math in my head tells me in our region it would be about $45/game. Assuming 10 home games and 10 away games my budget would be 75% gone on transportation alone.
  16. We don’t travel to away games in an effort to save money in the athletic transportation budget. I know of at least one school in the Western end of the state who’s cheerleaders are told they have to travel to away games, share the bus with the players (not a big deal except), and pay for half of the cost of the bus out of their money they fundraise while the athletic department pays for the players.
  17. I clicked too many times after searching for the schedule, and ended up reinventing the wheel under your post. I apologize for that. I am multitasking at my job and legitimately thought I was starting a new thread that didn't even exist (insert Homer Simpson "doh!" here). Madisonville and Marshall are both away games.
  18. 8/4 vs Logan County (Scrimmage) 8/10 vs Caldwell County (Scrimmage/Thursday) 8/18 at Owensboro Catholic 8/25 vs McCracken County 9/1 at Meade County 9/8 at Bowling Green 9/15 vs Muhlenberg County (district) 9/22 vs Owensboro (district) 9/29 vs Graves County (district) 10/6 at Madisonville-North Hopkins (district) 10/13 BYE Week 10/20 at Marshall County (district) 10/27 vs Daviess County
  19. Greetings, I know this topic is a little aged, but I paid $20 so I could get involved in it. Everyone has made valid arguments as to why school spirit, and consequently attendance as sporting events, is down across the board. As to the original post about the absence of band and cheer at some of these games. I've been in the cheerleading industry for a near quarter century. As my friend, Mark Coleman, coach of the Morehead State cheerleading program, says: "Kentucky is a mecca for high school cheerleading." There are more Kentucky teams that attend the National High School Cheerleading Championship than any other state. The number usually approaches 90-110 depending on the year. Our schedule usually looks like this: KHSAA cheer regional in early November (teams that are playing football into the playoffs typically have KHSAA regionals the morning after a football playoff), UCA nationals qualifier in mid-November, and KHSAA state in early December (around the first or second full week of basketball). That part of the season isn't very difficult to navigate. Then the fun begins. My kids run 4 practices a week, 2-3 basketball games a week, and exhibition/showcase performances on Saturdays for the month of January and week of February. We head off to NHSCC, and when we get back, it's district tournament time. We make it work, but I've got 30+ athletes (Probably 40 next year), and can put them on a rotation so they don't have to do all the games. Smaller schools with smaller rosters would probably really struggle to not miss some games.
