Is Highlands' Coach Sphire in a do or die situation?
I know times have changed but I don’t put much of it on the players. Coaches should demand respect and accountability. If they’re telling these boys one thing and they’re doing another, then they are failing as coaches. And to be clear, I am not laying this all at the feet of Bob despite the title of the thread. We don’t know how much is delegated to staff members. But Bob, or any HC, is going to be the head on the chopping block for the actions of his assistants. It’s been pretty well documented that the assistant coaching pool wasn’t what he thought it was going to be upon arrival. So he brought on people he met via the hiring process, dads of players, and career junior league coaches. And one that never should have gotten away, Scott Wiggins, only lasted a year. He’s an exceptional coach and would have been great for the program. Let’s see how it all plays out. That’s all we can do.

Is Highlands' Coach Sphire in a do or die situation?
This is my last post on the subject as I don’t want it to be a distraction or create a negative vibe so early in the season. As I’ve stated numerous times, this is Highlands best team in years and the class EVERYONE in Fort Thomas who’s been watching, has expected to do very big things. Bob doesn’t need 4 years to do what he was brought here to do, win state. That timeline wasn’t the expectation when he arrived and it’s not now. The time is now, with this class. He’s had 2 years to establish his system and get the boys bodies built up. The work is done. So the frustrating part for me, is seeing how poorly they’ve executed right out of the gate, in both games. Winning cures a lot of things. Things like assistant coaches making childish tweets and IG posts, personal foul penalties, sophomores refusing to play JV, playing 13 year olds for 8 straight quarters in August, feuding personal trainers glomming off the program publicly bickering and using Highlands players as photo ops and pawns. Those same trainers, and coaches, telling the world via social media that a certain superstar is the the #1 player in the class of 2026, something so incredibly irresponsible and detrimental to said player that I can’t believe those relationships continue. None of that is what I expect from Highlands and none of that is healthy. So win now because it’s starting to pile up.

I don’t disagree, and have heard similar. Cheerleaders have been asked to stop cleaning up the stands after games because of some of the things they’ve been finding. A revolving door in the administrative offices doesn’t help. Bob and company are about to have their 3rd principal in 3 years. Solid all around.

2023 NKY Frosh Football Scores & Rankings
It would appear so. It’s a bummer for those freshmen. They haven’t lost a game as Bluebirds. And were up 14-0 when the tank ran dry. Back to back games on an August afternoon has to be brutal.

I saw that same rule, which would unfortunately make them all ineligible. But, I also heard that the new reset day is Sunday as opposed to Friday. ??♂️. I hope that’s the case.

I’ll bite. I think with everything that lead to the hiring of Bob, expectations following the hire, monetary investments by the school, and the creation of a cash cow football only booster program, it’s not unfair to expect results by year 3. And at Highlands that means winning state championships. I don’t know how long you can kick the can down the road if they don’t win it this year. Weinrich had folks unpacking their pitchforks by year 4 and managed to squeeze out another couple of seasons before it got down right ugly. I wonder if some of those same folks who were instrumental in his ousting still feel the same way about what Highlands Football means, and the expectations that come with that. I’d be very curious to see what they think, or if they have now ingratiated themselves with the current regime to the point that they can no longer be objective. I like both Bob and Hayden, and many of the other assistants. They work their tails off and have implemented some very positive elements that were previously lacking. I, like many others, have had this season pegged as THE ONE for a number of years. I still feel that way and truly hope they accomplish their ultimate goal. But if they don’t, something may need to change. Go Birds!

Highlands 28 Covington Catholic 27 (JV)
Sounds irresponsible if true. Makes me wonder about non-Frosh JV players getting enough reps as well. Doesn’t make a lot of sense to have JV players acting as tackling dummies for varsity all summer, and ride the pine on Fridays only to have freshmen come up and take their JV reps. Especially when those freshmen are also starting Frosh. The balance of reps doesn’t seem to add up.

Doubtful. This isn’t a new development. There have been plenty of opportunities to nip it in the bud well prior to Friday night’s game.

Covington Catholic 35 Highlands 21
Seemed pretty balanced to me. I do think this Highlands team is the most talented group since 2014, but it was pretty clear that questionable play calling and critical turnovers were the deciding factors last night, not either team’s talent level. All that really matters is how they adjust and what they do with that talent against 5A teams in November. This is a make or break season, and people know it. The rebuild is over. *That would have made a great motto for this season’s tshirts btw.

I don’t know them well but I like both Sphire’s. Strictly speaking from a business perspective, it’s hard to imagine either being back for a 4th season if they don’t win State this year. HHS brought in the big gun, paid him accordingly, started a football only boosters that had raised god knows how much $$$, and have been pointing at this class as THE ONE for 3 years. It has to happen now. Maybe that’s unfair, but when Weinrich got run off, they pushed all their chips in to turn things around. It can’t take 4-5 years to do so. Duffy and Dale did it in 2.

This was the turning point in the game IMO. As I’ve stated previously, the 2 headed QB creates a lot of second guessing opportunities. And this is a BIG one. If Highlands punches it in there, they’re up 21-14 and have all the momentum. I will say I was glad to see Benke come back out after the pick 6. Pulling him there would have been devastating and created a lot of potential problems. Hoping they build off of this one and continue to improve. * And the jawing, pointing, and self love has to stop. It’s embarrassing.

Schools requiring adult guardians to escort students/children to games.
It only applies to highlands students. I have no idea how they would know who’s who, but I’m guessing there are teachers present? Let’s just say they don’t do a great job of enforcing it. There’s really no point because they can’t all fit anyway.

Hell, a kid got tackled into the concrete ramp of the bleachers in a JV game last year. It wasn’t pretty.

Well part of highlands’ problem is that they have a silly rule saying middle schoolers have to sit in those tiny bleachers in the north endzone, which aren’t even close to big enough. They aren’t allowed in the main bleachers and really have no where to go. The whole stadium needs to be revamped, with the bleachers widened and pushed back from the field. It’s way too close to the visiting sideline.

I will have a few versions, but this one is first. I’d love to have every single NKY team in it, but space is limited. Next one will have all of the small schools.
