Just hearsay, so nothing concrete, but supposedly, he was supposed to have had his hearing last week I believe. Usually takes about 30 days once they have the hearing, so my guess is if he is ruled eligible, he'll see the court around the first part of February.

Not much changed in the way of rankings this week. Many teams were not very active due to the Class A and 2A tournaments taking place. However, we were treated to the top 3 teams playing each other. Larue County lost to Adair County 92-80 in a 2A semifinal. The Indian trio of Gilbert, Blakey and George combined for 74 points. Michael Harris for Larue had a great game with 35 points. Then in the 2A finals, Adair defeated Taylor for the second time in 8 days. This time by a 3-point margin. The Indians will play Bell County in the first round of the 2A State tournament on Friday, and if victorious will play the winner of Boyd County and Henry County. The All A Tournament was a little less exciting. The finals saw Caverna defeat Campbellsville by 22 points. Caverna went 3-0 in the tournament, and the closest game was the finals. They defeated Fort Knox by 52 points and Washington County by 25 points. Bethlehem would have probably been the most competitive matchup for Caverna, but Bethlehem was upset by Campbellsville in the semi-finals 54-56. Nelson County had their 7-game winning streak snapped by CAL in the 2A section 3 tournament. They rebounded with a district win against Thomas Nelson. Currently in the 19th district, Nelson sits as the #1 seed, but they have 2 district games this week at Bethlehem and then hosting Washington County. The 17th district looks to be a solid lock now for North Hardin. Elizabethtown had an upset victory over Central Hardin 71-65. This was at least to me a very surprising outcome especially considering that the game was at Central Hardin. Watched this game on NFHS last night. I really like both of these teams. Neither team is as talented as any of the top 4 teams in the region, but man these kids play hard for their coaches. And kudos to both coaches for getting the best out of their kids. Both teams have already exceeded my expectations for them this season.

Another week, another #1 team. I’ll admit up front, I’m not 100 percent on these rankings for this week, from top to bottom. However, with Christmas tournaments over, and the schedule of more games with regional competition, we should over the next couple of weeks get a much clearer picture of what the 5th Region looks like. Adair County had a solid week and got a huge district win against Taylor, 82-80 in a great basketball game. The trio of Tylin George, Dawson Gilbert and Landon Blakey combined for 73 of Adair’s 82 points. The Indians followed up that win with another win the next day against Barren County. Taylor County was the team of tough luck this week. But they played 2 great games. The aforementioned loss to Adair County on Friday night and then a 4-overtime loss to Henderson County the next day. Caverna had a nice win against Fairdale on Saturday, that ended a 2-game skid from the White, Greer, Maggard Holiday Classic. They lost their last game in that tournament to Bryan Station 49-50. Larue County is the first team to hit double-digits in the win column. They sit at 10-3 coming into this week. While the competition may not have been what some other teams have played, they have played solid basketball and they’re getting the most out of players like Mikie Harris, Cole Miller and Owen McDowell. Don’t look now, but the longest winning streak in the region belongs to Nelson County. What a remarkable month the Cardinals had. They have already surpassed their win total from last season. Jordan Gilbert has the Cardinals looking to make noise in 2026. North Hardin has established themselves as the dominant team in the 17th District. The Trojans had a solidly convincing win at Central Hardin on Friday night, winning by 22 points. I thought North was the better of the 2 teams but didn’t think they were 22 points better. Just an overwhelming performance for the Trojans. And by the way, Keriawn Berry is set to make his debut with the team this week. Of note this week: Caverna, Bethlehem, Green County, Campbellsville, Washington County and Fort Knox will all be participating in the Class A tournament. While Adair County, Taylor County, Larue County, Nelson County, Marion County, Thomas Nelson, and John Hardin are participating in the 2A sectionals. Not trying to be argumentative with you, but that's not true. In fact, in all high school sports players have never had to leave unless the officials decided that they couldn't stay. Baseball players don't leave the dugout, football players don't leave the sidelines. I'm not saying that the officials wouldn't direct them too, just that it hasn't been automatic. But evidently that has changed.

I heard the same. Not sure when that became a thing that the player had to leave the bench. It used to be that they could stay on the bench as long as they behaved and didn't cause any issues. Officials have usually agreed to that because if they leave the bench a coach has to go with them.

I have been told that his ejection was overturned and he is eligible. Had the ejection not been overturned, he would have had to sit out the Somerset game and Taylor County. As of last night, he will be able to play against Taylor County as well.

I am simply at a loss for how to rank the top 3-4 teams in the 5th Region. Taylor County got off to a great start, not an overwhelming schedule to start with other than Warren Central and now this week playing against some pretty good teams and going 0-3. Adair County was ranked number 2 last week, and they go 1-1 on the week losing to Greenwood, who is a decent team but ranked number 9 in region 4. And then got a win against Muhlenberg Co. who is ranked number 4 in the 3rd region. Caverna, I think, makes the most sense right now as the top team in the region. The loss against Larue 2 weeks ago wasn’t great, but it was a game that Caverna fought hard to overcome a 15-point deficit at halftime and then lead much of the 4th quarter. Caverna gets a win over Great Crossing and then lost to the number 1 ranked team in the 3rd region Daviess County. Larue County is 8-3 and their best win is against Caverna. They had a respectable showing in the King of the Bluegrass tournament and went 2-0 this past week with 1 more game to play in the Railroad Classic. Their 2 wins have been against pretty weak teams. Not a ton of games this week. A few teams finishing up Christmas tournaments. Hart County, Fort Knox and John Hardin will be participating in tournaments that start today (Monday- 12/29). Of note, 3 district matchups take place on Friday, Thomas Nelson at Washington County in the 19th district. North Hardin at Central Hardin which will help us see who is in control of the 17th district, and then the 20th district showdown with Taylor County traveling to Adair County. This week and next week are always the hardest for me to review because of all the Christmas tournaments that are being played. Because teams play teams from all over the state and other states it is often hard to gauge how good a win or bad a loss actually is. And some teams this week played more games on consecutive days than they’ve played all season, so how much does fatigue factor into these results? So, with that said, some teams moved up quite a bit because of the number of wins while other teams moved down due to the number of losses, and all of that might even back out in a few weeks. I do have some movement at the top of the rankings this week though. Taylor County takes over the #1 spot. The Cardinals went 3-0 this week starting with a good win over Boyle County. They are playing in the championship of the Capital City Classic this afternoon (Monday). The Cardinals have gotten off to a great start at 8-1 with their only loss coming to Warren Central in a game that they only trailed for the last few seconds of the game. Caverna drops down 2 spots to the #3 spot. The Colonels went 2-2 this week. I don’t know anything about the two teams that they defeated, Butler College Prep and Faith Christian. However, I was very impressed with their grit in their loss to Larue County at the beginning of the week. Caverna trailed that game by 15 at the half, tied the game by the end of the third quarter and led with about 30 seconds to go in the game. The game ended with a little bit of controversy. Coach Pittman got a technical foul with about 30 seconds to go. That gave Larue County 4 free throws and the ball back, which is all they needed. Every team will be in action this coming week except for Hart County, who played 5 games this week. A few teams are playing in the same Christmas tournaments so we could possibly see some in-region matchups depending on what happens. As far as Christmas tournaments in the region are concerned Central Hardin will be hosting the Planet Fitness Christmas tournament which includes, Fern Creek, Southern, Christian County, Campbell County, Louisville Central and 5th region teams Green County and Washington County along with host Central Hardin. Campbellsville will host the Farm Bureau Holiday Classic with teams from Pendleton County, Beechwood, PRP, Cumberland County, Harlan County and 5th region teams Bardstown and Thomas Nelson. Bethlehem will host the Bethlehem Christmas Classic. I’m not exactly sure of the format for this event but Somerset Christian, Butler County, Muhlenberg County, and KCD will be there along with 5th Region teams, Nelson County, Adair County and Elizabethtown. Was a really good ball game. Think it was a 3-point lead for Central at halftime. 2nd half Central was able to capitalize on some turnovers and Nelson didn't quite shoot it as well as they did in the 1st half. I think these 2 teams will be surprise teams when we get to the post season.

If I am being completely honest with everyone, including myself, so far I’d use the word disappointing to sum up 5th region basketball through 2 weeks. Maybe it was my expectations that this year would be the year that other regions would have to take note of several teams from the 5th, but through 2 weeks, I’m not certain many top teams in the state will be too worried about teams from the 5th region. We still have some teams that haven’t gotten all of their transfers eligible. Some transfers just got eligible and that will make a difference for some teams as they get more playing time together. There was no change in the rankings in the lower half. Teams 13-18 remain the same. Bardstown drops to #12 and is still winless so far. They will play Washington County this week, who is also winless, so one of them will get one in the win column. Green County had the biggest drop from 4 to 10. Things don’t look good in Greensburg. Star player Eric James Jr has left the team. Modi Kuyoate is rumored to be gone as well and doesn’t look to be getting eligible anytime soon. Transfer Uth Laws finally has been made eligible and had a couple of good outings so far but have heard numerous rumors about him leaving as well. Then transfer Kai Wade, who still hasn’t been declared eligible is also rumored to be on his way out. If all of that turns out to be true that will be devasting, but the loss of James takes Green County from a top 5 team and regional contender to a team that will likely struggle to get out of the district. Marion County cracks the top 10 this week in the number 9 spot. The Knights have played much better than I think anyone would have expected them too. Gabriel Washington had 41 points in their win against Green County this past week. Nelson County also moved up a few spots in the rankings this week. Jordan Gilbert has the Cards playing well as a team. A solid district win against Bardstown puts them and Bethlehem as the top 2 teams in the 19th district for now. The only thing remaining the same in the top 5 is the top spot belonging to Caverna. They had a dominant win over Green County that was followed up by a tough loss to CAL. CAL is a very good team and for the most part controlled the game. The shooting for Caverna has got to get better. I haven’t looked at stats but just watching the game, the Colonels struggled to shoot the ball consistently well. Taylor County could make an argument that they should be in the top spot and had they held onto the win against Warren Central they likely would be. The Cardinals lost to Warren Central when they gave up the lead on a free throw with around 5 seconds left in the game. That was the only time they trailed. Bryce Vernon is playing well for Taylor County right now. Adair County has everyone healthy and eligible now, so don’t be surprised to see the Indians start making a move for one of the top 2 spots in the region. Larue County smacked North Hardin in a dominant win early in the week and then dominated district rival Hart County. I thought this might be a year where the Hawks would struggle and come region tournament time be on the outside looking in, but with all of the changes in the 18th district happening, don’t be surprised for the Hawks to be right in the thick of it. Really have no clue when some of these kids will be ruled eligible or even if they will. Landon Blakey at Adair County was made eligible on Tuesday.

With one week in the books now, it’s really difficult to get a sense of how good some of these teams will be, especially with some teams playing 3 games this first week and other teams barely getting in one game. We’ve had a couple of district upsets already, which makes you wonder why you schedule district games so early in the season. Adair County fell to Campbellsville in a 3-point shocker. And Nelson County looks to be much better than advertised and came up with a convincing win against Bethlehem 83-68. Jordan Gilbert is proving that he can coach any group and got double digit points out of 4 seniors in the game against Bethlehem. The other interesting part of week 1 is just the number of [redacted] students who are still ineligible. Adair County, Green County, Caverna, and North Hardin all have students who at the moment are ineligible and have not played yet. This week has some games that should be very good in the region. Starting in the 18th district, Green County will travel to Caverna on Friday, Dec. 12th. North Hardin will travel to Larue County and Barren County where the Trojans will take on Glasgow. Taylor County will go across town to Campbellsville, where the Eagles will look for a second district upset. Central Hardin will travel to Louisville Trinity and will also go to the Panther Den for a 17th district matchup against Elizabethtown. The 19th district sees action too as Bardstown will host Nelson County and Bethlehem travels to Washington County and host Thomas Nelson this week. On Saturday, Dec. 13th there are some great games lined up at Bardstown High School for the Tiger Classic. Central Hardin will play Male, Taylor County will play Warren Central, Caverna faces Christian Academy of Louisville and Bardstown will host Butler in the last game of the night. I was there watching. The foul and the shot happened around the same time. Wayne County coach went nuts and the official went and talked to one of his partners, after a pretty quick conversation the official signaled the basket was good. One of the other officials was about to inbound the ball not realizing it should be Montgomery basketball. The Wayne County coach said something else to the official and was given a technical. I talked with the official on Sunday, as I know him well and from what he told me about what the coach said, the technical was warranted. It was an odd sequence of events but I do think they got the play right ultimately. The calling official could have done a little better job right off the bat with his mechanics as he pointed the wrong way initially when he called the foul. Probably wouldn't have changed the outcome of the events but might have had a little less confusion from the start.

Looks like Modi played in the scrimmage. Hard to believe that they would be playing him in a scrimmage if he's not eligible.

Was told over the weekend by someone who I would think is pretty accurate when it comes to this sort of information, but Lightning for Caverna has not been ruled eligible yet and Modi from Green County did get eligible but as someone else posted on the other thread it was an issue with how many semesters he had been in school. Evidently he had 2 9th grade year transcripts.

Donnie Swiney, former Etown head coach has been named the interim Head Coach for this season.

Was not aware of Mack being at North. Without Berry, I would have had them lower in the top 10, but everything I've read about Berry and some highlights I've seen of his, he seems to be a player who can put a team on his back and carry them. Getting another player to help though would certainly go a long way.

I didn't realize this until today, but Lee Colvin, a Senior, has transferred from Campbellsville to Larue County.

Matthew Turner resigned earlier this week, I believe either Monday morning or late Sunday night. That certainly throws a wrench into things for the Lady Cardinals basketball program, as scrimmages have already started and the season is only 3 weeks away, and now you have to move someone else into that first chair.
