5th Region: Week 6

Featured Replies

Not much changed in the way of rankings this week. Many teams were not very active due to the Class A and 2A tournaments taking place. However, we were treated to the top 3 teams playing each other.

Larue County lost to Adair County 92-80 in a 2A semifinal. The Indian trio of Gilbert, Blakey and George combined for 74 points. Michael Harris for Larue had a great game with 35 points.

Then in the 2A finals, Adair defeated Taylor for the second time in 8 days. This time by a 3-point margin. The Indians will play Bell County in the first round of the 2A State tournament on Friday, and if victorious will play the winner of Boyd County and Henry County.

The All A Tournament was a little less exciting. The finals saw Caverna defeat Campbellsville by 22 points. Caverna went 3-0 in the tournament, and the closest game was the finals. They defeated Fort Knox by 52 points and Washington County by 25 points. Bethlehem would have probably been the most competitive matchup for Caverna, but Bethlehem was upset by Campbellsville in the semi-finals 54-56.

Nelson County had their 7-game winning streak snapped by CAL in the 2A section 3 tournament. They rebounded with a district win against Thomas Nelson. Currently in the 19th district, Nelson sits as the #1 seed, but they have 2 district games this week at Bethlehem and then hosting Washington County.

The 17th district looks to be a solid lock now for North Hardin. Elizabethtown had an upset victory over Central Hardin 71-65. This was at least to me a very surprising outcome especially considering that the game was at Central Hardin.

District games this week:

17th District: Friday, Jan. 16- North Hardin at John Hardin

18th District: Tuesday, Jan. 13- Caverna at Green County
Friday, Jan. 16. -Green County at Larue County

19th District: Tuesday, Jan. 13- Nelson County at Bethlehem
Tuesday, Jan. 13- Washington County at Bardstown
Friday, Jan. 16- Washington County at Nelson County
Friday, Jan. 16- Bardstown at Thomas Nelson

20th District: Monday, Jan. 12- Campbellsville at Taylor County
Friday, Jan. 16- Marion County at Campbellsville

Do you have any Intel on when Keriawn Berry will be eligible to play for North Hardin? I have watched him many times. He played a season for an AAU program I was close with a few years ago. He is a huge difference maker if eligible. I don't know their roster and other pieces but he is a very very nice player. I am not comparing him to Kevin Durant, obviously he would have to continue to progress at a high level to get near that level. He is also 6-5 where KD is 6-11 ish. But the way he navigates the floor , shoots with distance and gets to the rim reminds me of KD. He is a mid major D1 talent currently, and I could see him potentially ending up power four level- he`s got that level of talent and potential I think.

I am putting 5th region on notice if he gets cleared and eligible.

Just hearsay, so nothing concrete, but supposedly, he was supposed to have had his hearing last week I believe. Usually takes about 30 days once they have the hearing, so my guess is if he is ruled eligible, he'll see the court around the first part of February.

Just in time for Districts. will be interesting to watch.

In your opinion is the 5th Region down a bit this year? I did some refereeing many many moons ago in the 5th and Etown and North Hardin, Bardstown and Marion all had VERY good teams. It just seems a bit down these past few years.

Yes, that would be safe to say, the 5th is down somewhat.

I would agree that the 5th is down this year. Etown has been down for the past few seasons which really hurts the 5th. Etown used to be sort of the elite of the region so when they are good it's better for the region. Adair, Taylor and Caverna are all really good, but maybe not quite as good as was expected. Green County was thought to have been a regional contender this year, but it's an absolute cluster in Greensburg. North and Central seem to be hit and miss. Although I still wouldn't count North out, especially if Berry gets eligible soon. The only 2 teams that seem to me have exceeded expectations this season are Larue County and Nelson County. No coincidence that those teams have 2 of the top coaches in the region.

I would hold judgement on Caverna until Lightning gets some run with there guys.  Obviously, Adair is better with their additions and Breeze is a solid ball coach.  Larue Co. is solid and is well coached.  The Harris kid is a really good scoring PG.
