Who and what grades are the youth of the Casey team? Just curious as I am not familiar with them. How about the younger player (sophomore I think name is Trevon Sylvester) for Pulaski? How has he helped them since arriving?

You beat me to the punch getting this 24th district poll out, so I will pick Fern Creek for argument sake :sneaky:. Before I comment on my prediction, I will say that in last night's 22nd District Championship Doss beat DeSales and looks to be the clear favorite. Tyler Jefferson is back on the team with another double double posted last night. After watching that game, I suspect neither of these teams want the fate of potentially facing Doss in an opening regional game which the loser has the possibility of drawing. It will add to the incentive for both teams. I would agree if Fern Creek wins it would be the upset choice. Bullitt East has won 5 consecutive District titles I believe and Fern Creek has to go back 10 years to 2005 since they won a district championship. In the victory of JTown, Coach Schooler did a great job on a scheme defending prolific scorer Brandon Johnson from JTown. He averaged 27 ppg all season and 32 ppg in the last six games. With one of the freshmen, Anthony Wales, defending him for most of the night and quick double teams whenever he came off picks it was a difficult night for him. He scored 6 points in the first quarter and only scored 3 free throws the rest of the evening. He totaled 9. Tony Washington played exceptional and Trey Hill had 12 points and 10 rebounds. Ahmad Price also scored in double digits. So the question is whether they will do the same to Tyler Sharpe and will that strategy work with the other Bullitt East weapons available to leverage? These teams played to a 2 point game last time, and I expect another close game. If Fern Creek can revise that same plan on defense with the adjustments to account for additional weapons they could win this game. If Tyler Sharpe goes for his 17 point average or more than I think it will be Bullitt East.

Moore upset Central Bullitt on CB's home court. Even though they are 7-17 overall, they are 3-2 in District play of what would have to be considered the Region's easiest district within the 6th region to advance from. Moore is also 4-4 in their last 8 games so they are playing better after getting Keonte Smith back who was not playing in many of those losses. Keonte is a 1st team CJ 6th region selection and makes a difference averaging 17 ppg. I would not be surprised to see this 7-17 team advance as a District Champion in the 23rd. North Bullitt would still be favored just on the fact they have a 17 point win over Moore from an early January game. North Bullitt has a respectable 16-10 record and also 5-1 in district play. They also easily beat Southern so they are playing good based on the large margin of victory. Ricky Dunnavan leads North Bullitt and he was a 2nd team CJ selection from the 6th region.

PRP should be heavy favorite after winning earlier this week versus Valley. That win pushed Coach Mabrey into the all-time top spot for Most Wins in Jefferson County coaching history. Holy Cross upset Fairdale in their semi-final match-up and has played anybody/anywhere despite being a smaller private school. Perhaps the competitive schedule for Holy Cross pays off in what would be a major upset should they win. Game starts at 7:30 at PRP

I watched the Eastern/KCD game and was actually impressed with Eastern's play early in the game. KCD is not the KCD of the past. They had two players who were 2nd team All Region and Eastern had them down 16 at the half. The game got a lot closer in the final quarter, but Eastern was always in control. Reed was big in the 1st Q, but really did not impact the game like Trey Moses. Stranger things have happened, Eastern could win the district championship without Reed, but it will be much harder to do so.

The incident came the day after the win over KCD. So he did play that game, but will not be playing again is my understanding. As in other places, word travels pretty fast here in Jefferson County, but I prefer not to be the guy who pours gasoline on the fire at the expense of a kid. If what I heard is true, he will have paid the ample price. It was not a terrible character issue or harming anyone else, just a stupid mistake kids that age make. I know, had 5 kids myself and had a similar situation with a daughter who turned out to be a great young woman and mother later in life.

Without getting specific, a team rule violation has allegedly caused Cameron Reed to have left team for the remainder of the season. Stranger things have happened, but doubtful of any return. He was the sharpshooter with a D1 LOI with New Orleans.

Doss was up most of this game by 10 or so, and then DeSales made a nice run and got the ball back under 30 seconds to go down by 3. They took a really bad shot in that situation and Doss secured the rebound and hit 1 of 2 free throws to seal the victory. Doss is just so interesting to watch because within each game they look so good and then disappear. It is a talented team, but they go through a stretch they just look uninterested. I still think they go to Rupp, but if they keep turning it on and off then sooner or later it could break down on them. DeSales did not get a good game from Senior Chase Shellman. He was just off tonight. Had he played his normal game this may have been a DeSales victory.

Season Recap Previews for Districts 21-24 from the 6th Region were posted last week. In this article there will be a recap on the season and a look on how close the Top Ten Preseason rankings compared to the Final rankings. At the end will be Awards for individual players and Coach of the Year. The season started with a bang when Doss beat PRP in the opener for both teams in a 62-61 thriller. PRP came from down 13 with less than 2 minutes to go and almost came back but fell short. Could the season have been different had PRP posted the win? Doss went on to post an 11-0 record against 6th region foes and only had two other games within 10 points, a 7 point win over Bullitt East and a 3 point win over Iroquois which was surprisingly close. They are the clear favorite to win the Region and are led by Seniors DuJuanta Weaver (17 ppg) and Terrell Gray (15 ppg). The team did go through a major controversy with the situation of a Parent & Player getting into a physical altercation with Coach Tony Williams. Part of that fallout was the unexpected departure of Senior Post Player Tyler Jefferson who also averaged (12 ppg & 7 reb). Still they have beaten the other top contenders, Bullitt East and DeSales with relative ease. Bullitt East has the size to create some match up problems, but the speed of Doss creates problems for Bullitt East. Tyler Sharpe was the scoring leader (17 ppg) for Bullitt East and whenever a big basket was needed it was usually Sharpe who answered the call. Twin towers Tyler Bacon (9 ppg & 6 reb) and Jared Farris (11 ppg & 6 reb) along with Bailey Rakes (8 ppg) and Brandon Klefot (10 ppg) formed the remainder of a very balanced team of veterans. Bullitt East can make a strong run if they play like they did at the KOB during the holidays. DeSales is the 3rd likely team to advance to Rupp representing the 6th region. DeSales has struggled in two losses to Doss, but they have put together a very nice season. Chase Shellman (15 ppg & 7 reb) has been the star of the team as expected, with Shaun Sullivan (12 ppg) emerging as another scorer on a team that plays great team defense. This team has been boosted by a great coaching job by Tom Crews who has an efficient offense that places a premium on good looks from the three point line. If DeSales can continue to run their offense smoothly and hit open three point shots they could be an able challenger to advance from the 6th region. PRP and Fern Creek round out the Top Five who could possibly be dangerous in the post season run. PRP is always dangerous with Coach Mabrey at the helm. However, this season they struggled down the stretch losing four of five before they rebounded by winning their last three games. Richard Gaines averages a double double (21 ppg & 11 reb) and is living up to his preseason POY ranking. Without Gaines, this is a team that would likely struggle to play .500 ball. With him they cannot be discounted to make a strong run. Seniors Drew Glass (10 ppg) & Raheem Khalid (10 ppg) are the other major contributors on this team that likely will be rebuilding in the future so they know this is the last chance for awhile which they will have a good chance to return to Rupp. Fern Creek came in with a total new look from the team that produced a successful coaching debut last season under new Coach James Schooler. Without any returning starters or even experienced players, Coach Schooler began rebuilding with a trio of talented freshmen and a high scoring junior transfer. Tony Washington (15 ppg) was the transfer and lived up to his billing of scoring points in bunches. The three starting freshmen Anthony Wales, Ahmad Price, and Trey Hill formed a nucleus for the future while each averaging around (10 ppg) and also leading contributors across all the statistical metrics. 6'8" Senior, Desi Agonva, also showed improvement throughout the season with (8 ppg) and leading the team in rebounding. Fern Creek was the leading rebounding team in the state and a big part of that was the emergence of this wide body post player who only had JV experience leading into this season. If Fern Creek can get by Jeffersontown in their 1st round district game, they could be a dangerous team in regional play. However, Jeffersontown may be a difficult game with Senior Brandon Johnson (26 ppg & 6 reb) fighting to prolong his terrific high school career. Brandon was outstanding on a team that everyone game planned to stop him without much worry from any other player. He still scored significantly and was one of the best players in both the 6th & 7th region this year. There really is not any other threat in the region to push through the regional tournament to potentially move on to Rupp. Some teams may inflict some damage to the aforementioned teams, but nobody else really has a legitimate shot to advance all the way through the 6th region. For the most part the layoff creates "game day" rust, but unless a team is able to squeeze a game in then that should be something each team must deal with. Assuming teams are getting equal practice time, the only real benefit I see would be for the team that needed to get some rest and the lack of games allowed some nagging injuries or sickness to get time to completely heal. There is the potential those teams that are methodical and have rigid routines might be more bothered by the long layoff because they are thrown off a bit. Those teams that are more laid back and loose might not be bothered as much from an abnormally long time between games. Mentally the team that maintained focus in whatever practice time that was available should have the upper hand.

I would tend to agree that it makes sense for popular programs to offer multiple teams in as many age groups as they can. It comes down to simple supply and demand. If enough kids want to be associated with a certain program despite not being "good enough" to secure a spot on the marquee team it could still provide "exposure" benefits. But in most cases unless a program is fat with cash it comes down to economics as well. I have had an age group that needed to be split and it costs more to fund two teams than one. It makes little sense to balance the teams, especially when the teams get into the 16U & 17U age groups. Most programs if they are not player funded will likely support the elite team in a different way financially. So like most things in life the economics of the situation will likely play a role. If you can find a team that provides similar exposure opportunity, is as good as the "B" team of another program, and it would cost less to play then I would see the benefit to move to that team. Exposure, competitiveness and economics seem to be the most important variables, but coaching, individual development, and location could make belonging to a "B" team more attractive. Plus, some kids recognize they may not be as talented as it requires to be on the "elite" team, but are still good players that fit better on a "B" team without being upset about it.

24th at Mercy * Wednesday – Whitefield Academy (4) vs. Bullitt East (1), 6:00 Tyler Sharpe and the Bullitt East team has already defeated Whitefield once this season in early January by 33 points. There is not any way that Whitefield can close that gap, and BE has been playing much better of late. BE wins by 20 or more in this one. * Wednesday - Jeffersontown (3) vs. Fern Creek (2), 7:30 This is going to be a tough battle that likely goes down to the end. Senior Brandon Johnson for JTown will not go down in his last game of a great career without a fight. If he goes off for one of his 35-40 point games then JTown could likely advance. If Fern Creek can key on him like they did in the 1st half of their previous victory over JTown then they could possibly hold Johnson closer to 20 points. If that happens, then Fern Creek likely advances. If he scores between 22-33 points then it will come down to who else comes to play for JTown. No other team needs to rely on one player in this region like JTown does with Johnson. If I am the Coach, I let him have free will to do whatever he thinks it will take to get the team a victory and advance to the Regional Tournament. Since I feel the Coach will not give that free hall pass, I am predicting a Fern Creek win by 5 or less. * Friday – Final, 7 This will likely be Fern Creek facing Bullitt East, but it could also be JTown (see above). For this final district pairing I feel Bullitt East will win by a close game over either team. I have mentioned before that with the younger players at Fern Creek it will be whether they are bothered by the big game environment of their first district final. If they respond without being impacted and Tony Washington is hitting his shots, the Tigers could get an upset. There is less margin of error for Fern Creek to win than Bullitt East so I am expecting a close battle that leaves BE as the #1 seed advancing from this district.

23rd at Bullitt Central * Monday – Evangel Christian (5) vs. Southern (4), 6 Despite Southern coming in with a 6 game losing streak, this will be an easy win over Evangel Christian. They played earlier in the season and Southern doubled the score on Evangel winning by 47 points. * Wednesday – Evangel Christian-Southern winner vs. North Bullitt (1), 5:30 This could get interesting. North Bullitt is 15-10 and Southern is 10-15. Southern has played the tougher schedule and owns a victory over North Bullitt already by 8. Both have struggled of late. I think it will be #4 seed Southern in a close one over the district #1 seed, but would not be surprising to see North Bullitt win either. * Wednesday - Moore (3) vs. Bullitt Central (2), 7 Because this is at home and Bullitt Central has won 6 out of their last 7 games they appear to be the slight favorite, but again it will be a close game that Moore could easily get the victory to advance to regional play. Moore lost to Bullitt Central by 7 earlier in the season. Even though they have lost 3 out of their last 5 games, they are playing good as of late with close losses to PRP (2 points), JTown (2), and Doss (10). It would be no surprise to see Moore win this game and the district, but Bullitt Central gets the slight edge here. * Friday – Final, 7 It really is hard to predict who will be in the final and any of 4 teams could win this district. I am going to pick Bullitt Central, but either Southern or Moore could just as easily win. In all honesty, this district will send two teams that had they been in any other district would likely not be advancing to the regional tournament.

22nd at Western * Monday – Iroquois (5) vs. Butler (4), 6:30 Butler has struggled this season with 5 wins and 18 losses. They have lost 6 in a row to end the season, but their last win was against Iroquois which leaves them hope in this game. In fact, Iroquois has only won 6 games and lost 21 with a 9 game losing streak. Both teams are incredibly young and are a mirror image of each other. I predict the team that has been able to continue believing in their coaching staff during the string of losses will win this one. On that note I am going to predict Iroquois given that Coach Morrow has more experience in dealing with defeats over the course of his career. * Tuesday – Western (3) vs. DeSales (2), 6:00 A couple of weeks ago I would have predicted a very close game and possible upset alert with Western capable of giving DeSales everything they wanted and more. However, DeSales has closed the season well while Western recently was upset 35-34 playing Holy Cross. I believe Western was missing their best player and not sure the extent of that absence or if he will return. However, it will not matter in this one as DeSales is playing well right now with senior leadership, especially from Chase Shellman who is a top player in the region. * Tuesday - Iroquois-Butler winner vs. Doss (1), 7:30 This should not even be a contest and Doss will win easily. But with that said, Doss beat Iroquois by only 3 points two weeks ago. I think they were bored and when tournament play begins we will see a revitalized Doss team. Blowout regardless who they play as they move on to play DeSales. * Thursday – Final, 7:30 Predicting a good game in this District Final with Doss lining up to play DeSales. This is the toughest district in the 6th region to advance as a #1 seed. Both of these teams along with Bullitt East are the clear favorites to advance to Rupp. They could even both advance during regional play to meet again in the regional final in a 4th match-up of the season. This will be their 3rd meeting with Doss winning by 12 in the first and 22 in the second. I just think Doss has a match up advantage when playing DeSales. I pick a DuJuanta Weaver led victory for Doss in this one.

21st at Pleasure Ridge Park * Monday – Beth Haven (5) vs. Valley (4), 7:30 Just looking at records one could assume that Beth Haven with 19 wins on the season should win this game against a 5 win Valley to advance to play PRP in the semi-finals. But that is discounting the fact that Valley did not back away from playing a much tougher schedule despite being very young with little returning talent. In fact, one of the Valley wins was a victory over Beth Haven early in the season by a wide margin. This is why I ignore the win/loss record for the most part and focus on who teams have beat, not how many. I have to give a big advantage to Valley and first year Coach Joe Harris who has been steady with his rebuilding approach utilizing younger players which has paid dividends as his team has improved throughout the season. * Tuesday – Holy Cross (3) vs. Fairdale (2), 7:30 This could prove to be a closer game that Fairdale would like, but I am still predicting a Fairdale win. Early in the season these two teams played and Fairdale had a 22 point win in that contest. Holy Cross has won 4 out of their last 5, including wins over Bullitt Central and Western. However, they were beat by St. X by 36 points recently. Fairdale lost to that same St. X team by 14. As long as Fairdale has stayed together after losing some seniors towards the end of the season, I suspect they will be playing PRP in the Final game of the district. * Wednesday – Beth Haven-Valley winner vs. Pleasure Ridge Park (1), 7:30 PRP beat Valley by over 40 points in the beginning of the season. PRP may not have improved as much as Valley, but they are still good enough for a comfortable margin should Valley beat Beth Haven as expected. If Beth Haven does win, it will not matter as PRP will move on to the Finals of the district. * Friday – Final, 7:30 This should be an easy prediction of PRP facing Fairdale. Both will advance on, but likely we will see PRP as the #1 seed from the 21st in the 6th Region tournament. These teams did play less than a week ago and it was a 9 point victory margin for PRP. With tournament play at PRP, I suspect they will be ready and capable of making this one a bigger margin, but Fairdale has a chance for the upset. I feel we will see Richard Gaines have a major impact as a senior determined to return to Rupp for his final go around.

Wow, this is very similar to my own resume of championships.....as a player HS Regional Championships in Basketball & baseball and as a coach multiple state championships with a travel AAU basketball team. What they all had in common was the feeling of accomplishing something together where the identity of the accomplishment was not an individual feeling, but a shared one. Some call it a "team" ego, but you literally check in your self ego & pride and only see yourself as a part of something bigger than yourself. To share the joy with others who traveled the same journey is much different and I believe more satisfying than someone who celebrates their individual accomplishments.

DeSales also has a 22 point loss to Doss while Doss beat Iroquois recently by 3. Yet DeSales easily beats Iroquois. This is just a crazy year in the 6th and now it looks like the last week of the regular season will result in many canceled games that do not get rescheduled. Welcome to districts after a week off of school kids. It is many times about match-ups and Doss does seem to match up well with both DeSales and Bullitt East. I am guessing that Doss will beat DeSales in their district game, but can they beat them a 4th time if they were to meet in the Regional Final? Will Bullitt East win their district and avoid playing Doss early in Regions? I still think these three teams are the likely candidates to advance to Rupp, with Doss as the most likely.

I think the dialogue in this thread is indicative of the really difficult task of figuring out teams in this region. If there is ever a year an unexpected team could make a run through regional play and make it to Rupp, this is the year. However, since the opening game of the season with Doss defeating PRP, they have been the team to beat. Their downfall is they seem to take teams lightly. I do feel that they will come into tournament play with the focus they need and will not be taking anyone lightly. Beyond Doss as the team with the best chance would come down to either DeSales or Bullitt East. After those Top 3, it would be PRP and Fern Creek. My surprise pick is Jeffersontown. I am not sure they can do it with a single player carrying the load, but Brandon Johnson is really special and if he gets hot they could make it through to the region where they could be the sleeper pick.

The top 4 teams in the 6th region all won their games this week and are overwhelming favorites to advance from their respective district as #1 seeds. However, Doss & DeSales will need to battle it out to emerge as the #1 seed from their district since they reside together. Entering the last week of the regular season Doss and PRP will wrap up with two games against 6th region opponents. They each play Fern Creek with PRP facing off against the Tigers on Tuesday, and Doss finishes the season off with Fern Creek on Friday. Bullitt East and DeSales each have two games with opponents outside the 6th region. Top 10 1.) Doss Doss is undefeated in 6th region play with a 11-0 record and 21-6 overall. However they did not win either game in a fashion that would convince you they are hitting on all the right cylinders. They beat Bardstown 58-57 which was the closest loss that Bardstown has had in losing to all 5 Jefferson County schools they have played this season. Doss finished the week beating Moore by 10, but Moore has struggled this season with only 6 wins all season. Fairdale and Fern Creek are the only teams remaining in the way of achieving a perfect record against 6th region foes. 2.) Bullitt East Bullitt East is a solid # 2 in the ranking this week. They came from pretty far down to get a 3 point win against Dixie Heights which shows they can never be counted out of a game. With Tyler Sharpe hitting timely shots they can make some noise in the 6th Region. They also easily won over rival North Bullitt and are now 18-9 and 5-3 in the region. 3.) DeSales Now 21-6, DeSales has a 10-2 record in the region, with three consecutive wins last week. Only a 51-48 win against Collins gave the Colts any trouble . I watched the Colts handle Fairdale pretty easily last week and they are very difficult to beat if they are getting open three point shots. They can also score in close with efficient play sets, but they really excel at circle backs after penetration and hitting their open guy at the three point line. If they get open shots they will hit most of them, so the key to stopping DeSales is playing very good defense. The Doss/DeSales match up in District could be a preview of a regional final as they are both capable of making a strong run in the post season. 4.) PRP After a single win in their last 4 games, PRP got two wins this past week over Iroquois by a large margin and then a 9 point win over Fairdale. They could very well be a strong contender in the region because that is what Dale Mabry and his staff prepare for. They lost key players from their last season run which ended at Rupp, but never count out the Panthers when tournament play begins. They are 16-7 overall and 9-1 in the 6th. 5.) Fern Creek After going 2-1 last week, the Tigers are now 16-10 and 8-3 in the region which puts them outside the likely candidates to win the region, but they are a dangerous team that nobody would choose to play in early rounds. Fern Creek beat Fairdale by 15 and also St. Xavier by 13 last week, but between those two games they lost badly to Central. Before district play begins Fern Creek will get a chance to prove how much of a threat they could be when they play both PRP and Doss in the final week of the regular season. 6.) Fairdale Fairdale stays in the 6th spot despite going 1-3 last week against 6th region opponents. They are not dropping because they lost to three teams in the spots of the rankings directly in front of them. Fairdale had a chance to rise in the rankings had they won more games last week, however, they took a step back from the five teams in front of them by losing to #3 DeSales by 18, #5 Fern Creek by 15, and #4 PRP by 9. They did beat Iroquois by 22 in their fourth and final game of the week. They exit the week with a 12-14 record, but they are still 9-4 within the region. 7.) North Bullitt North Bullitt is moving up to the 7th spot over Western and Whitefield who each lost to 6th region opponents last week as did North Bullitt. But North Bullitt lost to #2 Bullitt East while Western lost to Holy Cross and Whitefield lost to Valley. North Bullitt is 15-10 and 5-3 in the region. 8.) Western The loss to Holy Cross was a 35-34 loss, but they also had a win over Southern earlier in the week. Western is now 10-9 and 6-4 in 6th region play. They finish with 6th region foes, Moore & PRP. 9.) Holy Cross Holy Cross loss very badly to St. X, but rebounded to beat 6th region foe Western. They close out the season with Bethlehem and Male. They are now 13-14 and 5-7. 10.) Bullitt Central With 4 consecutive wins, including a win over 6th region, Valley, the last spot goes to Bullitt Central. They are 14-13 and 6-6 on the season Top Player Freshman Glenn Queen from Fairdale gets the nod as he is emerging as the best player on the Fairdale team in recent games. After several players exited the Bulldog team in late season dismissals, Queen became a starter and has not looked back. He is making an impact and has led his team in scoring since inserted into the starting role. His future looks bright and he will be a big cornerstone to the rebuilding job that is going on at Fairdale.

That 6'6" to 6'8" size is the tweener size in college. The higher the D1 program the more likely you need to get closer to 6'8" or taller to play the post and 6'6" or smaller is a wing. As you slide down to Mid-Major and Lower D1 then it does seem like a sliding scale in size to play the post. You cannot do much about changing your height, but by adding both post and wing skills it can only help in making you more attractable wherever you might land which is what Ben appears to have done. Hats off to him for being versatile and becoming a very good high school player that has both an inside and outside game to his credit.

I like what you said about polished with his back to the basket or facing up. At 6'6" Ben has done something many taller kids his size or even a bit bigger have failed to do....learn to play with his back to the basket in the post. So many kids his size are obsessed with playing the wing, but fail to develop any type post game. Ben is able to do both and it makes him so much more valuable to his coaches. I see way to many 6'6" or taller high school players that refuse to work on a post up game. With that size it is a bonus to play out on the floor, but still retain a post up game.

I have always heard but never knew for sure that Chance was a very special football player as well. Is that the case?

Trey Moses is a great young man who does many wonderful things that many would not know. He is very dedicated to working with challenged and special needs kids simply by just being their friend. I really appreciate young basketball players that are as good off the court as on. I know his father well and he should be very proud of this young man. I could not be happier for him to experience a win in his senior year in this fashion.

What a difference one night makes. Fern Creek loses to Central last night by 17 and then beats St. X by 13 tonight.
