  1. Made a believer out of me. He reminds me a little of Jeff Lubrecht. A little shorter, but same build, same speed. He is tougher to bring down than Lubrect was. Very, very strong kid.

Kind of similar to my comparison of Vocke too. Having played Beechwood in the past, I believe that Vocke's body frame and strength is very similar to what Broeckhoft was and his speed and ability to make defenders miss tackling him is similar to that of Lubrecht, a very good combination to have in comparison to two very talented RBs out of Beechwood.

  2. This post definitely brings back some fun times, the times of the majority of these players was when I was still in high school as a football player and just shortly after. It also makes me remember how strong the NKY Class A district used to be. Even though Beechwood was still the best at this time, the district was still much tougher having Newport Catholic which was always tough, Lloyd when they were tough, Bellevue and Dayton which had good and not so good teams at times, and Ludlow. Dayton had its sub 500 seasons during this time, but it was nothing like it is now. During this time, the NKY Class A district was one of the best in the state and viewed as one of the most competitive of all districts from Class A to 4A.

  3. I was pretty sure that Vocke's statistics over the whole season had to be good, but after seeing his numbers in the article, I was very surprised.

He has 1,485 rushing yards and 29 TDs, rushing for an average of 12 yards.

Against six Class A opponents, he has rushed 47 times for 959 yards, producing an average of 20.4 yards and 23 TDs.

In five non-district games against Dixie, Highlands, Covington Catholic, Newport Catholic, and Covington Holy Cross, he carried the ball 77 times for 526 yards and 6 TDs with an average of 6.8 per carry.

    AMAZING

  4. This proves that anyone can win at any given time. Someone had something mentioned about Bourbon winning 2A in '97, Simon Kenton made the title game two years ago as a #4 eventhough they lost; same year Bullitt East made 4A title as a lower seed and nearly beat Bell County in what was supposed to be a major blowout. Anything can happen. I can understand the argument that all teams making the playoffs with the current set-up of the system are not good, but others are and have proven that they were deserving of making the post-season.

  5. There are several players with me coming to mind. By the way, that team back from early 90s with Bellevue had all kinds of talent. If I remember right, they made the state title losing to Russellville. On into the 90s, Bellevue had Karcher, the Swopes, Roa, Fausz, the Wilsons, Cayze, and others.

As far as other players, the teams at Dayton from '95--97 had a lot of talent; Jason Skirvin, Mike Walls, Jerry Cline, Neil Richardson, Jason Leger, Matt Hundemer, and more. Obviously Beechwood had a lot of talent between the Wulfecks, Berger, Brockhoft, the Bishops, Lubrecht, Hergott, Zahler, Jones, Zeller, Huth, and more. There may be some forgotten talents at Lloyd; particularly Holmes, Lloyd, and Lee. If I remember right, Lee had some of the most impressive passing statistics of NKY quarterbacks during that time.

Many speak of some of the best teams of Highlands being over the more recent few years, however, I don't know how the team with the class of '93 can be forgotten. That was a loaded team with Scarlato at RB, Crawford at QB, and the lines on this team had Schlarman and Reynolds. I believe this was a very good team and I believe that Adam McCormick was QB for Cov Cath at that time, which was a big upset when Highlands beat them and advanced to win state that year.

Two good players come to mind for me from Campbell County during early/mid 90s; Doug Turner and Greg Menetry. From Boone, obviously there was Alexander. One more RB I can remember playing during a scrimmage from Conner was George Duvall, he was a beast.

Newport Catholic had a lot that I can't remember many names except for Sandfoss, Meyers, Wiggins, and Eviston. During the early 90s, Newport High School had possibly one of the best runningbacks in NKY, Adam Brown.

A few other standouts that I can think of came from teams with average and below average teams, including John Gibson and Nathan Brummett of Simon Kenton and Roy Hall from Scott High School. Hall may have been able to start as a RB for any school back then.

  6. This should be an interesting game and may be one of the better ones going on in the 2nd round of Class A. This season, I have saw WV play once and did not see Frankfort. I think this may be a closer one than some are thinking and from what I have heard about both from others, I wouldn't be surprised if WV pulls out with a win.

  7. I can't believe that I am even seeing that SK will beat Ryle. They will be very lucky to even get another rematch with them. Tates Creek should have won and they did not because they clearly beat themselves. I believe that SK will need a miracle to even get past Henry Clay. Anyway, my answer to this post is that Trinity will win hands down against anyone anyehere. If anyone is capable of giving them a game, it is Ryle.

  8. And I must have also missed how TC was killing the SK defense running or bouncing to the outside. They turned the ball over on downs a couple of times. SK had one good offensive drive resulting in a TD. The fumble by TC on the 2 yard line in the 2nd quarter and the bad snap on the punt by TC in the 4th quarter were the differences in this game.

  9. I was surprised to say in the least after seeing the game between Simon Kenton and Tates Creek tonight. I, like many others, expected this one to not really be close, which definitely proved me wrong.

Before the playoffs started last night, I really thought there was going to be a legit chance of seeing a rematch between SK and Ryle. After last night's game, I'm not so sure. SK was very fortunate to win tonight. Tates Creek really impressed me with the way they played and if it were not for the fumble that they had on the 2-yard line in the second quarter, the fumble they had on a kickoff, the bad snap on the punt in the 4th quarter, and a few penalties, one which could have went either way if another officiator was calling the game when the RB for TC broke loose for the touchdown, they would have clearly won this one.

SK did not beat TC, TC clearly beat themselves tonight. SK needs to be much better than last night to beat Henry Clay. I am aware that TC is kind of similar, but HC is better, and will win if SK plays the way they did last night, guaranteed.

  10. You are right mexitucky, it's still sad to see happen, especially when it was the school you attended and when things were much better from administrative, leadership, and sports perspectives. I definitely do not put the complete blame of the football problems on Deaton. I'm perfectly aware that he punched out a window on a bus, but you have to really think about all of the contributing problems to what caused that, which I also do not believe has to do with the players/students.
