  1. We played a team that finished 16-12 last year...they featured a top prospect, take him off the team, and they probably go 8-20?? Every time we played them, the stands were full of pro and college scouts. My point is...If you can play at the next level, they will find you. :thumb:
  2. I'll add that by playing on a quality summer ball team, it expands the opportunity to be seen. If your high school team is a little weak, as mentioned in an earlier post, and your summer team features a top prospect or two, scouts (college and/or pro) who routinely come to watch the best players, also get to see everyone on both sides of the field. As you know, the baseball network is very tight. So if a minor school is talking to a scout and mentions that they are in need of a shortstop, the scout may say "I seen a kid over the weekend that might be of interest to you"...and there you have it. I’ll admit, some of the expenses get a little crazy, and if a coach tells you that "they are travelling to Florida to play in a 62 team tournament and 50 colleges will be there" be cautious, the schools already know who they're looking at, and to watch over 1000 players in a weekend...no way, not happening! One other point...our son has played on travel teams the past few years and it's been worth a penny invested. It expands his network with other players/coaches that might not normally happen, and several have become true family friends.
  3. This was the 5th game in 6 days for the Jumpers. You gotta love high school baseball!! Somerset flat out, hit the cover off the ball (24 runs) all night. Wayne County only committed 3 errors for the game. The Jumpers hit for several doubles, triples and a HR to give the Cardinals their first loss of the season. Maybe not the best of wins...but hey, its a win. Great job guys. Good luck in Florida
  4. I don’t think it’s possible to ever make it a level playing field. Coming from a small high school with only 400+ students, we share athletes in every sport. If basketball goes deep into tournament play, they miss most of the early baseball practices which begins Feb. 15th. And, as everyone knows March weather in Kentucky doesn’t allow for many opportunities to be on the field. So, now let’s throw spring football practice into the mix. I can count at least 13 baseball players (7 starters) who play football. And then someone says “well they have AAU or fall baseball”… again if you’re sharing athletes, coaches are tugging, pulling and/or pushing to get just a little bit of their time, only a small percentage of our players get to play “fall ball” for one reason or another. So…here it is a few days until the official baseball season begins and we have several players who have only been on the field a couple times. I don’t know what the answer is, but in our case the current policy can’t work like it was intended. Larger schools, which have athletes that only, participate in one sport, I’m guessing its ok, but for all of the smaller programs, it’s a little difficult.
  5. The 12th Region should be a lot of fun to watch this year with several teams being very competitive and very capable of winning it all. Somerset, Danville, West Jessamine, Mercer and McCreary should contend as everyone agrees, but don’t forget about the Warriors of Southwestern. They’ll challenge McCreary for their district. As for Somerset’s pitching staff, I think everyone will be very surprised in their depth. Alexander, Price and Henderlight will carry the load, with several other supporting cast members making for a solid staff. As for the statement about the Jumpers lineup (1-9), I’ll go a little further and say 1-12/13 is as good as anyone in the region. They’ll score lots of runs and their defense will hold teams to very few runs as well. As always, should be another great 12th Region baseball season!! Good luck to all the teams.
  6. what do you like? We have several options to choose from... Sonny's, Crackle Barrel, Culvers, Ruby Tuesday's, Frisch's, El Charro Mexican, Casa Grande (Mexican), King Buffet (Chinese), Fat Boys (great barbecue), Tumbleweed Grill, The Harbor (overlooking Lake Cumberland) ...loads and loads of pizza, subs, and other fast-food restaurants...too many to actually list. Let us know what you like and we'll provide the awesome southern hospitality from the fine folks of Somerset, Pulaski County…we welcome you to the Briarpatch!!
  7. Good chance a lot of fields will be shot from here on out. Good luck!!
  8. #14 for Somerset (Taylor Sears) has 4 INTs in 6 games. KHSAA has him listed as 7 games but he actually received a concussion on the very first play of the Russell Co. game (which counts as a complete game because he entered) and then set out the Danville game as well.
  9. All great points…I guess what I was trying to say is that Somerset dropped several balls that normally would have been caught. At least 2 would have led to scores. Both were early and seemed to have rattled their rhythm a little and led to some of the so called stalls mentioned above. Both receivers have great hands and normally make the plays. Not making excuses or anything, I just thought we caused some of our own problems versus Estill causing them. But you are correct; good chance the field conditions may be ugly the rest of the year. :thumb::idunno:
  10. Estill didn't actually give Somerset problems, the field conditions were very muddy...Estill Co. scored the first 17 seconds of the game and again the last 17 seconds of the game. Lots of slipping and sliding everywhere. Don't get me wrong, Estill is young and improving every game but the Somerset team seems to be clicking at the right time. Best of luck to all the teams.
  11. Somerset's (Soph) Taylor Sears led the county (Somerset, Pulaski Co. & Southwestern) in hitting with a .488 avg. During the summer, playing for the Paul Morse Mustangs, hitting in the #2 slot he hit .390...Look for another big year for the incoming left handed hitting Junior 2nd baseman.
  12. Somerset appears to be headed for something special this season, barring any other major injuries to the team. Senior WR Hunter Nelson is out with a broken collarbone, so someone will need to step up in a big way to fill his shoes. The Jumper defense has been rock solid as they have stopped their opponents twice on forth down to win their first 2 games. Somerset Junior Safety Taylor Sears stopped Knox Central Senior Chad Merida less than a half yard for the first down in week one, and Sears & Junior Zack Bastin stopped Pulaski County's Junior QB Zack Eastham on fourth and goal to help secure the 2 early wins for the Briar Jumpers. As for Russell County, Junior Taylor Hutchison is very explosive and can put up big numbers, but word is he's out with an injury...anyone???? Junior QB Marty Cross appears to be leading the Lakers in the right direction, but if Hutchison’s injury is true, it could be a long night for the Lakers. The Jumpers may have too much firepower as Junior QB Erick Manning has so many options to present havoc on teams this season. Prediction - Somerset 34-Russell Co. 12
