  8. December 12, 2012 Three’s swarm court at Boyd Game features 50 long balls attempted in Boyd Co. win Kyle Hobstetter The Independent SUMMIT — It was raining three’s at Boyd County Middle School on Tuesday night. Boyd County outlasted Elliott County 85-77 on Tuesday night in a game that saw 50 3-pointers attempted. It was a game right up Elliott County’s alley, as it made 13 3-pointers. However, Boyd County answered right back with 11 of its own. “(Elliott County) lives and dies by the three,” said Boyd County senior Austin Hunt. “They shot it really well tonight and gave us all we could handle. But we pride ourselves in shooting the ball well. Our offense is really based on getting by a defender and kicking it out for some three’s.” Hunt was one of Boyd County’s leading scorers, picking up 19. He got most of his points late, scoring 11 points in the final frame. After sitting out a year because of transfer rules, Hunt was welcomed back to competitive basketball against former school Russell, then district rival Ashland. Boyd County coach Randy Anderson said after a shaky start, Hunt is finally starting to get back into a comfort zone. “He just has a different look,” Anderson said. “Once we went to Rio Grande (to face Fairland) in the third game of the year, you could see him settle down and just be him. Not trying to do too much. Tonight he was just consistent and taking the ball to the rim.” Another big factor in the game was the play of the Boyd County bench. Boyd County (3-2) used just three players off the bench — Grayson Griffith, Bobby Anderson and Tristian Burgess — but the trio responded by combining for 42 points. Coming in, Elliott County coach Greg Adkins knew about the play of Hunt and Brandon Lowe, but after the game he came away impressed with the play of others. “My goodness, that supporting cast coming in and knocking down three’s,” Adkins said. “Seemed like we did everything right. We would get a hand up, and they would get a shot off and they would make it anyway.” Griffith came off the bench and tied Hunt as Boyd County’s leading scorer, putting in 19 points of his own. In the first half, Griffith went 4-for-4 from the field, which included three 3-pointers. “That’s what Grayson brings, he’s just active,” Anderson said. “He’s one that you know when he comes off the bench he’ll give you everything he’s got. Tonight he did a great job of having his feet set, and if he catches it at the arc and has space, he knows he can score.” Bobby Anderson added 14 off the bench for Boyd County while Burgess had nine. Lowe added 17. Logan Nickell who did most of the scoring for Elliott County. The junior guard had a game-high 33 points behind 11-of-20 shooting and seven 3-pointers. Nickell also went 6 of 7 in the first half, making all five 3-point attempts. While the shooting was impressive, it was Nickell taking the ball to the basket that impressed his coach. “Logan did what we expected him to do all season by being aggressive,” Adkins said. “He’s a very good shooter, but what I like most about him this season is his ability to take it to the basket. He’s becoming a more complete player.” Jesse Flannery fouling out in the middle of third quarter had a significant impact on Elliott County. Flannery had 12 points in the first half, all from 3-pointers, but left with only one shot attempt in the second half. Elliott County (2-4) is in action again on Friday night, taking on district opponent Morgan County at home. Boyd County is on a three-game winning streak. Its next game is at home on Friday against Shelby Valley in the Boyd County Roundball Classic. After starting 0-2, Boyd County’s senior leadership has risen to the occasion, Anderson said. “People don’t practice to lose,” Anderson said. “It was discouraging, to be honest, in our locker room. I’ve got a very special team and we have seven great seniors that do a great job of taking care of the younger guys and make sure things our right in there.” FROM MONDAY Boyd County 96 Rose Hill 32 SUMMIT Fourteen different Lions scored as Boyd County blew out Rose Hill on Monday. The Lions outscored the Royals 27-4 in the first quarter alone. Stefano Vaghi led Boyd County in scoring with 13 points. Jesse Wallace added 12. Cameron Thomas tallied 14 points for Rose Hill (0-7).
