  1. I just got the news of PP's injury this morning. I think I'll go back to bed and try to wake up from this nightmare:cry:
  2. The problem is that when a Private school runs afoul of the rules, the cries of outrage in posts on this site calling for separation, boycott, banishment from post-season, etc., etc., are many. It is reasonable to wonder where that outrage is when a Public school is caught outside the rules. It is also reasonable to want an explanation of the details of the violation in order to assess whether the lack of outrage is justified since we see the Privates vilified regularly in multiple posts upon the publication of the discovery of violations.
  3. Add Talking Heads to Run to State's list
  4. Portions of an appropriate quote: You cannot strengthen the weak by weakening the strong. You cannot help small men by tearing down big men. You cannot help the poor by destroying the rich. You cannot further the brotherhood of man by inciting class hatreds. You cannot help men permanently by doing for them what they could and should do for themselves. William J. H. Boetcker, 1916 (often attributed to Lincoln) I would ask, when in history has segregation of a group with perceived differences or advantages ever turned out to be a good idea? That separation has usually served, instead, to highlight the inadequacies of those supporting the separation.
  5. Exactly the point I was trying to make. Separation of Public and Private will not resolve the issue because problems run deeper than that.
  6. True. I was just pointing out that violations are not ONLY a Private issue, as many would like to contend. Also, IMO, Privates come under greater scrutiny than Publics, making them more likely to be found in violation. (I am not denying that violations were committed or that punishment was deserved. I am just saying that if Publics were held under the microscope the way Privates are, there MIGHT be a higher percentage of Publics on the list than there already is.)
  7. If the form of persuasion is against the rules, then we are comparing apples to apples, violation to violation. Unless, of course, you are proposing separation of all schools that have been found in violation from those that have not. You could form a pretty strong football class from the schools in this list.
  8. From another thread, the list of schools with KHSAA violations in recent years: 1. Hopkinsville 2. Lex Cath 3. Moore 4. Prestonsburg 5. Johnson Central 6. Holy Cross 7. Rose Hill 8. Highlands 9. Henderson County 10. North Laurel 11. UHA 12. Henry Clay 13. Tates Creek 14. Elizabethtown 15. Whitesburg 16. Marshall County 17. Lexington Christian 18. Bell County 19. Danville 20. Jeffersontown 21. Cumberland The majority of the schools on the list are Publics. If you split out the Privates, the Publics will only have each other to be "bickering" with.
  9. Since you like King/Bachman, I would recommend Dean Koontz's Odd Thomas novels or F. Paul Wilson's Repaiman Jack series.
  10. "Classic" is in the mind of the reader. I personally consider the term to be defined as a work which is of a quality to be recognized as being a great novel after the generation in which it is written has passed.
  11. Good novel, but I was "made" to read it in senior English in high school. Somehow reading is just not as satisfying when done for a class assignment.
  12. My second 5: The Time Machine - Wells The Mayor of Casterbridge - Hardy The Mysterious Island - Verne House of Seven Gables - Hawthorne A Farewell to Arms - Hemingway
  13. The Infamous Last Words thread brought to mind some of my favorite classic novels. Here are my top 5: Les Miserables - Hugo Of Human Bondage - Maugham Great Expectations - Dickens East of Eden - Steinbeck The Lord of the Rings - Tolkein What are some of yours?
  14. "I would have gotten away with it, too, if it weren't for you meddling kids!"
  15. Don't worry. Trains never use these tracks any more.
  16. That UK vs Vandy game should be a close one.
  17. Do I hear bricks being mortared, Mr. Poe?
  18. JQ was my favorite, too. Runner-up would have to be Scooby Doo before Scrappy made an appearance.
  19. I think there would be as many problems with the feeder school concept on the public school side, especially in Louisville and NKY, as on the private side. With students in Louisville able to attend any Jefferson Co. school and the open enrollment policies at many NKY independent public schools, there are just not any established feeder middle schools for designated high schools. How would you suggest the choice be made there since the choice of middle school does not necessarily indicate the choice of high school?
  20. In many cases the choice of high school does parallel the choice of college. Private vs Public is similar to State college vs private. In urban areas students may have to choose among several high schools, both public and private, that are viable options. This is the case in Louisville, Lexington, and NKY. If you're in a rural area the students' options may be more limited.
  21. Personally, I favor the beginning of the Freshman year. After that, barring a change of residence, a student transferring to another school should have to sit out one year of athletic competition.
  22. I see a lot of posts in this forum mentioning the point at which a student should choose which high school he or she is going to attend, without the loss of eligibility, but I can't get a real grasp on how many posters favor which option. So here are the options: 1. Middle School or earlier (Note: This would require resurrection of the "feeder school" concept. 2. Start of Freshman year. I would include in this other options for sports like football that begin before the school year starts such as the beginning of official practice or the turn-in date for the roster to KHSAA. 3. The beginning of EACH school year. 4. No restrictions at all.
