It should be noted that, as the article pointed out, decriminalization alone isn't the answer. Seems like Portugal is way ahead of the US on the "War on Drugs".

Other factors had also played their part however, Goulao, a medical doctor added.

“This development can not only be attributed to decriminalisation but to a confluence of treatment and risk reduction policies.”

Very interesting. Most people I know think I'm nuts when I say we should just legalize all drugs. I think I need to let them read this article.
That can't be the only reason. :D

Just playing, I'm with you 100% on this. I'd like to see all drugs legalized and made safely available to consenting adults. Though, I'm not sure on Portugal laws but I don't think they totally legalized everything. Just made it "less" of a crime that they don't enforce.

With all the pointless money we throw at the War on Drugs, I think some of these "other factors" could be investigated too. The thing is, if it's safe for people to obtain drugs, then it would be much safer for things like "dirty needle exchanges" to operate as well.

 You ain't alone on that analysis of me, FKW!

I'd really love to see this country come up with something similar to what they're doing, but we can't even seem to deal with people gambling without people losing their mind over it.

We're on the same page on this one, for sure. :thumb:

Then all the idiots who want to do drugs should just move to Portugal or Amsterdam. It would fit their lifestyle perfectly and they would stop trying to legalize drugs here.

I hesitate to respond to this, but what is your goal with banning drugs? If it is lower incidences of abuse and addiction then isn't it time to re-evaluate the US's policies? They appear to be failing miserably by almost any standard, and even starkly in comparison to what Portugal has done. If your goal is the moral rightness of banning drugs, no matter the costs, then I can't do anything but strongly disagree with you.

Besides the more obvious prohibition has never worked retort, our most dangerous and rampant drugs are manufactured by drug companies. Why make weed illegal but hand out pain pills like candy? Our society' s worst addiction is prescription drugs.

Sounds like someone needs a joint....no, no, a blunt right about now.

Non-drug users already bear a huge social and financial burden for drug users, and legalization will only make it worse. "Society" does have an interest.

You have stats to back that up? The whole purpose of this thread is to satire, in a way, the drug war that cost hundreds of millions of dollars to 'fight'. Its a joke and so is your statement.

Alcohol is a poison/drug. I'm sure you are in favor of that? Is it in our society's best interest or yours?
