What Would the End of Football Look Like?

Featured Replies

I'm shocked there are not more lawsuits in other sports, it seems football gets all of the bad publicity. For example last week when the middle school baseball player who almost died during tryouts for Lafayette wasn't really allowed to do that. The paper said it was for tryouts, tryouts according to the KHSAA isn't even allowed yet. Now if it was football there would be a lot of criticism and lawsuits.

Football gets all of the attention because that's where the majority of the concussions are as well as the heat stroke issues.

Clyde, that is true. I dare to say there has been as many Deaths in Baseball Nation Wide as Football in past 10 years.

You may be right. However, I don't think deaths are the issue. I think it's head injuries.

I don't know. I read an article a while back that said there were more concussions in soccer then any other sport.

Could be. Football is what makes the news and will generate lawsuits.

I agree. It just seems to me that other sport get a pass on it though.

Quick search showed that fooball has a rate of 3x to 4x that of soccer.

Disregard then, I must have read an old article. Or, had a concussion and had swiss cheese brain.

You would have Rugby.....

Less Rugby injuries than Football or Soccer.....

Take away the armor / weapons and teach proper form.

The reason that concussions have become the "sexy" cause in football is because the NFL has poured HUGE amount of money into all 50 states making it the "sexy" issue. Until recently the NFL did an abysmal job taking care of their players with concussions and were taking a PR black eye because of it. It is my opinion (and only my opinion) that the reason that the NFL has become so involved in this is to assuage some of their own negative issues with concussions. I truly fear that between it and other issue (heat illness included) may lead to the demise of high school football as we know it.

I fear this, too.

The article appears to be mostly speculation, but I said this in another thread a month or so ago, within the next 10 to 15 years, there will be some significant, fundamental change to the game of football. The handwriting is on the wall. Our litigious society will not allow a mainstream activity to continue that leaves it's participants with permanent mental & psychological damage. If you don't believe that damage is occurring, then you have your head in the sand. As more & more former NFL players are autopsied, the linkage back to non-concussion, repetitive head trauma will only become stronger, and the lawsuits will increase in frequency and magnitude. Change is most definitely coming.

The real question is, what will that change look like?

Perhaps rugby would grow but I see a huge growth in lacrosse on the horizon.
